DEFINITION OF ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS

FEBRUARY 14, 2020

Water quality index (ICA)
The Water Quality Index is the numerical value that qualifies in one of five categories, the water
quality of a surface current, based on the measurements obtained for a set of five or six
variables, registered in a monitoring station.

¿What are the objectives of environmental indicators?

The objectives of the indicators are to reflect the general physic-chemical conditions of water
quality.

Six indicators for water quality are presented

• Analysis of trends: to determine degradation or recovery of water quality over a period of

time.
• Add information: to easily understand the variations in the quality of surface water.
• Compliance with standards.
• Classification of sites: environmental conditions can be compared in different
geographical areas.
• Allocation of resources: to help make decisions in the allocation of funds and
determination of priorities.
• Public information: to inform the public about the conditions of the resource.

¿What is the importance of environmental indicators?

• They allow to recognize problems of contamination in a fast way in a determined point
and specific time.
• Allows conceptualization regarding the possibilities or limitations of the use of water for
certain activities.
• Its formulation allows to evaluate a large amount of water resources periodically.

¿How to use environmental indicators in the professional field?

Water indicators serve to inform about the status and evolution of water supply, demand and
quality in the country.

At the professional and labor level, the environmental indicators are of great help since they
fulfill different functions for companies that need environmental monitoring such as:

• Detect potential improvement opportunities

• Obtain and pursue environmental goals
• Identify market opportunities and cost reduction potentials
• Evaluate the environmental impact of the company
• Provide essential data for environmental reports and declarations required
• Promote the implementation of ISO 14001
