Answers to End-of-chapter questions for Chapter 20, Reversible

reactions

It is very important that you are able to answer the questions on your own, using your
own knowledge of Chemistry.
Have a go at the questions first, and then check your answers using this page.
If you get a question wrong, try to work out where you have made an error.

1. reversible; equilibrium; dynamic; temperature; gas; catalyst

2. a) The blue crystals turn to a white powder, steam comes out of the tube and
droplets of a colourless liquid condenses on the cooler part of the tube. This is
because the water of crystallisation leaves the crystals to form the steam and
the water droplets (the colourless liquid), and leaves white anhydrous copper
sulfate behind.
b) Add water to the white anhydrous copper(II) sulfate
c) CuSO4.5H2O CuSO4 + 5H2O

3. a) The liquid ICl and gaseous Cl2 reactants, and the solid ICl3 product, are all
present at the same time and their concentrations are not changing.
b) More yellow solid ICl3 forms and there is less ICl and Cl2. The equilibrium has
shifted to the right, were there are fewer gas molecules, to decrease the
pressure.
c) The ICl3 would all decompose back into ICl and Cl2. The equilibrium shifts to
the left to replace the lost Cl2, but because the system is no longer closed,
equilibrium cannot be reached, and the reverse reaction goes to completion.
