Decoloniality of gender

 Colonialism is a key part of capitalism, racialization, and gendering

 Gender is a colonial construct; it did not exist as an organizing principle of power before
colonization. Gender hierarchy divided men and women from one another
 Gender was present but patriarchy was intensified and took new and different forms
 Decolonial feminism is still exported from US universities
 (horn miller and yee) the church and the state could not change the physical reality of
our lives, but they changed our thinking, which was more damaging
o Forced to think more western
 Danger of single categories
 Decentering European thought
 The imposition of European social and gender constructions and hierarchies had major
effects on people in the colonies
 Recognize the centrality of colonialism to explaining how the world is the way it is now
 Seek to undo the effects of colonialism and colonial thinking
 What ways of thinking do you have that are “colonial”? How might you decolonize your
thinking?
 For now, if this is all new, recommend you keep the following questions in mind:
o what effects might colonialism have had on the present state of things?
o What does it mean that this particular place was colonized or was colonized in
this particular way?
o How might western theories – even “liberating” ones – be inappropriate to a
specific colonial context?
 Ex:
 Take back the land movement in florida and asking permission
 Buen vivir fund as “process-driven, decolonizing project”
 Indigenous media-communications van (knowledge production),
democracy now!
 Solidarity with sacred stone camp
