Activity Title: Addition of Polynomials

Concept Notes:
To add polynomials, combine similar terms. Recall that similar terms are terms having the same
literal coefficients. Add the numerical coefficients using the rule in addition of signed numbers and copy
the same literal coefficient.

Illustrative Examples:
Find the sum.
1. ( 3 x−4 ) + ( 7 x+ 8 )=( 3 x +7 x )+ (−4+ 8 )
¿ ( 3+7 ) x + ( 4 )
¿ 10 x+ 4

2. ( 5 x 2+ 2 x +3 ) + (−2 x 2−7 )=( 5 x 2+−2 x 2 ) + ( 2 x )+ ( 3±7 )

¿ ( 5±2 ) x 2+ ( 2 x ) + (−4 )
¿ 3 x 2+2 x−4
Addition of polynomials can be performed vertically by placing like terms under the same column.
