Understanding Multiplication

What is Multiplication? It is repeated addition!

What does the equation 2 x 3 mean?

1. Restate the equation as “2 groups of 3”

Think of an object (llamas!)

2. Create 2 groups of 3 llamas:

1 group of 3 llamas

1 group of 3 llamas

Add the groups together: 3 + 3 = 6 This is the same as 2 x 3 = 6

Multiplication is repeated addition! We added a group of 3 to another

group of 3.
We added 3--2 times
OR
3+3=6
OR
2 times 3 = 6
OR
2X3=6

It’s all the same! YAY!

Now you try!

I want you to draw the equations below as groups of x’s to

help you solve them. Here is one more example of the
steps:

1. Read the equation 2x4

2. Restate the equation 2 groups of 4
as groups
3. Draw 2 groups of 4 x’s xxxx

xxxx
4. Add the 2 groups of 4 4+4=8
5. Answer the
multiplication equation 2x4=8

On paper, draw a chart like this (do not color it!) and use
the 5 steps to help you answer the multiplication equations
on the next page:

Equation Restate Draw Add Answer

2x4=? 2 groups xxxx 4+4 2x4=8
of 4 xxxx
4x3=?

1x5=?

2x3=?

5x2=?

3x3=?

Create a harder equation in the last row (with bigger

numbers) and try to solve with the 5 steps!
