Sadguru Udghosh

Shrimad Rajchandra Vachanamrut

Patrank - 337 – 2 Summary
(15.12.19 Morning)

Please Note: This is an English summary of the Udghosh by a seeker, Rimaben Dhanky from Dubai and
has been uploaded here for the benefit of the English reader.

Patrank-337, Mumbai, Fagan Sud 11 and a half, Thursday, Samvat 1948,

“I am sorry to read the news of dear Chandu’s passing away. All living beings
who assume the body, they will give up that body, this is a directly experienced
fact seen by us. In spite of that, our mind does not reflect upon the transitoriness
of this body and move on the path of the eternal substance. It is worth reflecting
upon such a mindful thing again and again. Calming the mind, shedding the
grief is the way out. Instead of becoming sad, endure that pain with patience, this
alone is our religion (duty). This body also has to be given up in the same way, at
some time or another, that thought keeps occurring in the mind, and detachment
towards worldly life remains to a great extent. Whatever pleasure and pain are
acquired according to past karma must be experienced with equanimity, this
counsel of the Enlightened One has surfaced in memory, that I have written.
Mysterious is the fabrication of illusion.”

Now we have to think about the nature of life, nature of body and nature of our
relationships and go towards the nature of the soul. You are just an episode. Is it the
truth? Is it the supreme truth? Think about it. With the confusion of delusion, you feel
that death is bad or it came early. If you only think about the nature of life, nature of
body and nature of relationships, you will get into depression and cry at times. But you
have to think about the nature of the soul, go towards the eternal.

You feel that death means destruction. For others, we feel sorry, sad and for ourselves,
we have fear. What is death? The existent one became non-existent. What is birth? The
non-existent one became existent. This meaning shows our illusion, this is what Prabhu
explains to us. If you look at it from the perception of principles, metaphysically, it is not
possible that existent can become non-existent or non-existent can become existent.
Science also says that nothing perishes and nothing is destroyed. Jain Darshan believes in
inert and conscious both. Science is common sense, it researches on things that are seen
by eyes. It does not know anything beyond the senses. Substance only changes its form.
Even pudgal (Non-living), is never produced or destroyed. It only changes its form. If
The soul is eternal, it cannot be destroyed. You can break a sand particle into further
particles, but you cannot destroy it completely.

To make a building, you need bricks, stones, cement, water etc. You only look at it as a
building and you think that I am a maker of this building. From Anupacharita vyavhara
(which can be experienced, which comes in close contact), it is a doer of material karma
and nominally it is doer of building, town etc. You have just gathered all the things
required for the building, but you think that without me, this building cannot be made.
You are the doer of your illusions.

The soul will get separated from this body. The more you have faith in the Enlightened
One, the more this substance will get absorbed within you. Your consciousness will
become more certain, you won’t have fear of death. You get prepared for death. Fear is
not the solution to your problem. You should have a solution to know the permanent
substance -soul.

Death does not destroy living or non-living. All the substances remain in existence
forever. When many pudgal come together, a body is made. When this body has an
association with the soul, it is your day of birth. When your soul gets separated from the
body, it is your day of death. Why are you crying? You have to decide that.

If we switch off the light, the electricity does not get destroyed, the distinctness of
electricity gets destroyed. In this body, whatever distinctness this soul was showing that is
destroyed, but the existence, consciousness is not destroyed. You have just seen the bulb,
not the electricity. You have just seen the body, not the soul. Once the body is burnt, you
think that nothing is left. (For a deep lover of selfless service, there is no reason, there is
no explanation)

Our Rishis and Munis have never asked for release from death, they have asked for
liberation, where there is no birth, so there will be no death. We have fear even in our
prayers. We ask God to save us at the time of death, we want to chant the name of God
while dying. But if you keep chanting God’s name while living, you will die taking His
name only. If you are praying out of fear, it is not a prayer. If you are praying to have
strength towards the eternal, your prayers are in the right direction. But if you want to
turn the transitory one into a permanent one or without serving the reason, if you ask for
success, your prayer is filled with misery and fear. Such a prayer is not acceptable to the
Enlightened One. It is just your emotions and not your devotion.

You don’t have devotion to your daily rituals (nityakram). If you bring in feelings in it,
then it is devotion. Nityakram is a discipline for not getting into any sinful activities. At
that time, if emotions arise within you, that is devotion.

The truth is of two types. 1. Momentary truth. 2. Eternal truth. The momentary truth is
‘was not there- is there- will not be there’ and eternal truth is ‘was there- is there- will
always be there’. Momentary truth is from the viewpoint of that moment only. From the
perception of eternal, momentary truth will be unreal, false. But when you see the
momentary truth as momentary truth, it is true only. I was not alive 100 years ago and
won’t be alive after 100 years. So this truth is like a dream, it is not eternal. This can be
called an illusion, dream, false also. From the eternal perception, this form is nothing, it
is just a bubble in my existence.
There are waves in the ocean. Waves will get absorbed in the ocean from the viewpoint
of eternity, but the ocean will remain as it is eternally. In these two truths, from the
viewpoint of the Enlightened One, your mistake is you did not think that momentary is
momentary, you thought that momentary is eternal. You thought that transitory is eternal
and you did not accept it as transitory. If you accept ‘unreal’ as ‘unreal’ and false, then
only, you will be able to walk on the path of truth. Do not try to make temporary things
a permanent one. It is not possible and still, the whole world is behind this practise only.
When you accept a transient as a transient one, you are taking the first step towards
truth, samkit (right faith) or soul.

If you see yourself in the mirror today and tomorrow, you won’t find any major changes.
But some changes have taken place in your face within 24 hours, which are not caught by
the eyes or intellect. This transformation was very subtle. You realise after 20 years that
so much change has taken place in you. But when you see your house as a house in the
morning and rubble in the evening, you realise the transitory nature of things. But the
building was changing slowly day by day, so you thought that there is stability in it. You
had the illusion. Because of this illusion, you expected it to be stable and tried to keep it
as it is. You will still see the rainbow, but you won’t feel like building a house on a
rainbow because you know it is transitory, momentary. If you get attached, then if there
are any changes in it, you will become miserable. Now apply your intellect in permanent,
eternal things. Do not have an intellect of support in the rainbow. The Enlightened One
also looks at the rainbow, but He has no attachment in it, He does not see it as a
support. You don’t realise these changes at every moment. These transformations can be
observed only by a seeker. The seeker is the one, who has got yearning of liberation only.
Don’t expect stability in associations. This is proper sense, a superior sense, which you
feel is common sense. But actually, you don’t have this common sense also.

Three boys were gambling with cards. A newly recruited constable caught hold of them
and started taking them to the police station. On the way, there was a paan shop. The
boys requested the constable that they want to eat paan before going to jail. So the
constable allowed them and they ran away. The constable decided that he would never
make that mistake. Second time, same boys were playing cards in the same area. (When
you are pardoned, you don’t learn a lesson. You should use your atonement to go ahead
in your knowledge, restraint etc. You are not able to digest His compassion. Strong
atonement is His strong compassion and not abhorrence. The Enlightened One has His
inner bliss, the seeker has to follow his spiritual pursuits. Only the Sadguru showers His
compassion on you and gives atonement for your sins.) The constable again caught hold
of them and when the paan shop came, the boys requested and the constable said, “I
won’t let you go, I will go and buy paan for you.” This way, he repeated the same
mistake, as the boys ran away again. The moment you realise that it is the same nonsense
going on with different characters, you will be liberated for sure as you will be more
aware. The moment you see the same mistake getting committed everywhere, you will
experience more and more awareness.
Do not expect stability in associations. The body and soul should always be together is a
wrong expectation. If you keep running, your shadow will also run behind you. If you are
calm, your shadow will also be calm. To get rid of resolutions and volitions in transitory
things, you must stabilise in permanent things. In permanent, there is a virtue of stability,
you can expect stability there. Momentary is transient, it will not last for long, you have
to work with this preaching.

You have got only alternatives. 1. Make momentary a permanent, eternal one. 2. Leave
the momentary and look at the eternal. The second option is only possible. Happiness
and unhappiness do not remain stable. Your delusion is not annihilated, so you keep
doing new investments in various things. Many times, you want separation and you
cannot get separated. Many times, you do not want separation and you get separated.
The one with the first stage cancer does not want to die and the same person in the
fourth stage of cancer wants to die at the earliest. You always want new settings. If you
wish for death without attaining self-realisation, you will be miserable only. If you attain
self-realisation, it does not matter whether you live or you die, you are at peace. Without
self-realisation, you will experience boredom. The one who wants liberation from birth
and death is a seeker.

When Alexander was coming to India, he was told that in India, there is a valley in the
mountain, and there is nectar flowing from a cave. This nectar would make him
immortal. Alexander found the cave and he left all his soldiers outside and went inside
the cave. He was about to drink this nectar when a crow stopped him. He said that do
not make the same mistake that I have made. I drank this nectar and now I will be a
crow forever. I tried committing suicide but was not successful because of this nectar. I
won’t get any new settings now. If you do not change and become eternal, you will
become miserable. Don’t say, I don’t want death or don’t turn towards death, turn
towards the soul.

Param Krupalu Dev and all the Enlightened Ones have only one aim, “You should have
right understanding of death.” Utilise the incident of another person’s death and make a
strong decision that ‘Now I want to attain self-realisation only.’ Psychologists say, “You
should not think about death much, it makes you sad, pessimistic, ill, depressed, you
won’t feel like doing anything now. You won’t be able to survive in the momentary truth.
Enjoy life.” But the Enlightened Ones ask you to connect past, present and future and
take a decision. They don’t go according to moods. Because of that, you will never have
tears in your eyes. The present happiness will bring miseries later on, by saying this, They
deepen our perception.

Freud is known as a father of modern psychology. He was very scared of death. He

became unconscious when he discussed death. He kept saying that thinking about death
made him insecure, unhappy. Once he was travelling to the US with his student Jung by
boat. One day, on the deck, they both were discussing Egyptian mummies that in the
dead body, they stuffed and preserved them. By listening to it, Freud became
unconscious. He said, “Never think about death. It kills the enthusiasm for living life.”
The Enlightened Ones say exactly opposite to it. If you understand death rightly, you will
lead a very good life. You will attain eternal and have stability in the eternal. How? It’s a
whole process.

Death is an incident. Why do we call it sad? Both body and soul are not at any loss. Your
attachment, your ego is affected, that’s why you are scared of death. That’s why, you are
scared of Guru, as He will also wound your ego first. Once ‘I’ gets wounded, then that
one will feel like an enemy only. The ones who wound your ego, they are either Guru or
death. That’s why they both are seen as enemies and you are scared of your enemies.
Death is sad because I am attached. The one who is awakened feels that death is his
friend. The one whose consciousness is fearless, for him, death is the friend.

In Shakta sect, the moment you accept initiation, you are asked to go to the cremation
ground and apply the ashes of the dead body on your body. The person has to realise
that this body is also the heap of ashes. Till the time, death does not seem to be a friend,
you can’t go back to your Guru. This way, the person has no fear of death and death
does not seem like an enemy. You have to by heart what is permanent and what is
temporary? If they are thirsty, you have to drink water in the skull. When you feel that
this body is a heap of ashes, then only, you can go out of the cremation ground. When he
sees the dead body, he has to feel that it is horizontal, and I am vertical. This is the only
difference. You have to bring this much eligibility.

Death is a separation of body and soul. If there is one coast of the ocean, there has to be
another coast. This is simple mathematics. In logic and mathematics, you cannot argue, if
you are wrong in logic, you will get trapped. Logic is universal. When you fail in logic,
you start getting emotional. But the reality is if there is life, there is death. Once a pot is
broken, all the water will come out of it at some point or the other. Your lifespan balance
will also become nil at some point in time, you won’t get any prior notice for it, you will
have to leave immediately.

The Enlightened Ones call death as an examination. How to die has to be decided by you
during your lifetime, which decides whether you are a householder or a seeker. If you fail
in the examination, you will have to repeat the year. In the same way, if you fail in this
birth, you will have to repeat the birth. It is a shame. The people who were with you
went so much ahead, you will have to sit with your juniors. You will have to do the same
course work. What is the preparation for death? You should exercise in the gym or
should continue yoga. But death is inevitable. During your lifetime, try to remain in
samadhi in small incidents. Don’t try to run away. Don’t say, “I can leave satsang, but I
should feel better.” This statement shows that your death is going to be horrible. If you
don’t remain in samadhi during your incidents of life, your death will be bad. A man
asked his wife on his death bed, where are all the sons? She said that they were all around
him. He questioned, “Who is taking care of the shop?” You will die with such a karmic
stain if you have not cleansed your life daily. If you can remember God now, then only,
you will remember Him at the last moment.
If you bend down in front of your health now, at the end, you will think about your body
only. Practice samadhi in small things. You are not too unwell. But your delusion is
coming in the way. At the time of death, you will have many physical problems also, you
will need more awareness.

In Vijay Anand’s film, one day while shooting, the character was supposed to die and he
was not performing well. Finally, Vijay Anand said, “Bring some life in your death.” You
have to bring life to your death by practising death every day. Many people look very
bright at the time of death, they have a lot of peace on their face. It shows that he has got
good gati. He has no other thoughts. While saying bye-bye to others, he says bye-bye to
his body also.

In Tibet, they have a system called ‘Bardo’ (Liberation in the Intermediate State Through
Hearing). When a Bauddha Bhikshu is dying, all other Bhikshus come together and say it
loudly that you are not dying, your body is dying. If that Bhikshu by any chance is going
towards unconsciousness, he is reminded by others. Even if his eyes are closing, he is
awakened that his soul should remain aware, even if the body is getting affected badly.
With such awareness, the power of death is something different only.

For Gandhiji, singing “Rama Rama” was not a daily routine, it was his devotion which
remained present at the time of his death. That’s why, when he was shot, he said, “Hey
Rama”. He did not think even once, even though he knew that some people are going to
kill him. Rama remained with him all the times. He had faith in God. This faith does not
mean that He won’t let him die at all. He had faith that when He wants, He will call me
and I am ready to go. This is faith. In our prayers, we have conditions, that’s why our
prayers are not true prayers. Gandhiji had true faith, “I might be shot dead, but that is
His wish. I am ready.”

With the perception of death, your attitude will change. The rainbow will still be seen,
you will appreciate it too, the Enlightened One also can see the rainbow. But He has no
attachment or intellect of support there. He does not invest His love there.

In front of you, a patient and a doctor, a poor and a rich, at home or in the hospital,
people have died. When you see that a near and dear one dying, you feel miserable. Your
desires become milder temporarily. If you can hold on to these milder desires, take
preaching from it, your desires will get annihilated permanently. Somewhere from
Dhavalbhai, the thought has gone to you that you are going to die too, that’s why there
are tears at the time of death. When there is an association, you get an emotional push.
With this push, you can go towards dispassion and turn towards the eternal. This is the
art of living. You should know where to get attached and where not to get attached,
where to have acceptance and where should you not have expectations. With the
preaching of eternal, you learn the art of dying. You have to ask for forgiveness from
others and forgive others, but at the same time, you should ask for forgiveness from your
body too that if I have given you any misery, I am sorry, Michchhami Dukkadam.
The fear of death proves that you have not attained the eternal, you don’t have a
connection with the eternal or you have not looked at the eternal substance at all. Your
attachment is towards the transient things, not the permanent one. You are scared of
death, it shows that you have awakened a bit. The one who is filled with delusions says,
“Remain in the present moment and enjoy.” He wants to run away from reality. When
you are in discipline, don’t talk about the natural state. When you attain the natural state,
talk about it. Just now, you don’t know how to differentiate between indolence, self-will
and witness mode. Till Guru is there in your life, leave such decisions to Him. The
Enlightened Ones also say, “Remain in the present moment.” But He is aware of every
moment.

You have got five things. 1. Wealth. 2. Family. 3. Power 4. Good activities. 5. Virtues.
What have you done after taking birth as a human being? Did you increase your wealth?
It won’t come along with you. Your family won’t come with you. They are associations
like a river and a boat. They are not responsible for your attachment with them. At the
time of death, your power will also be gone. For your good activities, you will get
meritorious karma, by which you will get some more settings in transmigration. If you
have increased your virtues, then only they will take you towards liberation. If you count
on your virtues, you will realise that still, my anger has not reduced, negative thing has
not reduced, justifications have not reduced. But if your frequency, intensity or duration
has reduced, still, you should be happy. You have to keep an eye on all these things of
your mind.

Death means changing the body, changing clothes or changing the house. But if you
don’t have samadhi or peace during death, it shows that only daily rituals or reading will
not lead to peaceful death (samadhimaran.) You have to do something more to increase
your self-awareness. Daily rituals and reading are not sufficient means if you are
becoming restless in small incidents. You have to come to this decision.

Dharma means stability in immortal, in nectar. What is not dying within you, in that, if
you are stabilised, that is dharma. Everyday practise this dharma.

Raman Maharshi had self-realisation at the age of 17 and the direction of His life
changed. At the age of 17, suddenly He felt one day that His body started becoming cold,
His breathing pattern slowed down. He was aware of everything and became a witness to
the incident. We should also try a little bit like this. Practise dying every day. Awaken
your witness mode and get it on the conscious level. The body is non-living and it should
remain non-living only during your practice.

In your meditation, some ants may climb on you or you might feel like scratching your
body. The mind will ask you to scratch so that you can feel better in meditation for the
next half an hour. But do not scratch, do not give in to your mind. You are a dead body
at that time. You are a witness only, you have taken divorce with your body. What is
easier- marriage or divorce? Marriage does not have many laws, but divorce has to follow
many laws. Here we are talking about divorce with the body. In the beginning, to
separate soul and body, mind interferes a lot, but if you do not give in to your mind and
remain in witness mode, you will see the transformation within you.

For all these years, your dharma was to show off to others. But when you get
transformed, no one else will come to know about it. You will witness your witness
mode. Your life will divide into two parts. Worldly activities will continue happening and
you will remain calm in your witness mode. You will walk and talk, but still, you will
remain in the witness mode.

The person playing the role of Rama in Ramleela for the 600th time, he sees that every
time, Sita is getting kidnapped and he has to cry for her. But he is not affected by this
role, he has no happiness or sadness in the incident. His mind is as empty as the sky.

When birds fly in the sky, they don’t leave any marks. Just now you are in the state,
where you have many thoughts. But along with these thoughts, if you don’t have any
attachments and abhorrences, you remain clean only, there are no marks within you. Just
now, your soul is like a cobweb. You have to reflect on the 12 reflections (12 Bhavna)
and at the end, the reflection of the soul can only help you get rid of this cobweb. With
12 bhavna, you will clearly understand the nature of things. Without thoughts, you
cannot get into any activities. But if there are no attachments and abhorrences, they don’t
last long. We say that the Enlightened Ones do not have any thoughts because They
don’t have any attachments and abhorrences. Even if They have certain thoughts, there
won’t be any smoke of attachments and abhorrences, there are no marks of it.

Param Krupalu Dev showed this during His life and at the time of leaving His mortal
body. He said, “I am getting absorbed in my soul.” For Him, death was as natural as a
daily routine. It was so easy for Him to connect with the soul!

The Enlightened Ones have asked us to put efforts to be in feelings, thoughts and
preaching of eternal things. All the times, you should use all your energy to divert your
mind towards the eternal substance. No welfare is guaranteed if you climb the small hill
of Mohangadh, but if you climb the hill of your Pure Soul, where ever you are, your
welfare is guaranteed.
