Wireless USB

The Wireless USB Promoter Group is

crafting a specification for a Wireless
USB standard that will provide high-
speed connectivity over a distance of 10
meters. The data rate targeted is 480
Mbps which is comparable to the speed
of wired USB 2.0 and much higher than
Bluetooth.This technology is capable of
providing high-bandwidth multimedia
streaming and data transfers.

UWB
The basic transport mechanism for Wireless USB is the ultra-wide band (UWB) radio
platform. Multiband OFDM Alliance (MBOA) and the WiMedia Alliance has been focussing on
this standard.
The platform consists of two core layers:
1)UWB R ADIO LAYER
UWB transmits short, fast, low-power wavelets of energy over a very wide band of
frequencies.Whereas conventional technologies like radio frequency
(RF) and spread-spectrum technologies (SS) such as Bluetooth and 802.11a/g transmit a single
continuous carrier wave over a specified frequency. UWB
uses the 3.10 to 10.6 GHz slice of the radio spectrum. The usage of very broad band and
restricted power provides the high speed and limited range of UWB and also also enables
spectrum reuse.

2)THE CONVERGENCE LAYER

It serves as an interface between the UWB radio layer and UWB-based
applications and allows multiple applications to share a single radio.

WUSB CLUSTER TOPOLOGY

It uses a simple hub and spoke topology, with point-to-point connections
between the host and the devices connected to it. The host schedules and initiates data transfers
to the devices in the cluster by allotting time slots and bandwidth to each connected device. The
host can connect to as much as 127 devices
FEATURES
1)Backward compatibility:
Wireless USB will be fully backward compatible with the wired USB. current USB drivers and
firmware are compatible with wireless USB.

2)Simple, low-cost implementation

Preserves the low-cost, ease-of-use model that has
made wired USB the interconnect of choice.

3)High performance
Wireless USB will provide speeds up to 480 Mbps and in future may exceed 1 Gbps

4)Security
It will provide the same level of security as wired USB. Connection-level security will be
designed to ensure that devices are associated and
that both hosts and devices are authenticated before operation and encryption will be
implemented at the application level.

5)An easy migration path

Wireless USB will maintain the
same usage models and architecture as wired USB for easy migration.

6)Host-to-device architecture
It will use a point-to-point connection topology similar to the host-to-device
architecture used for wired USB.

WUSB APPLICATIONS
Wireless USB will make possible next-generation notebook PCs with fewer I/O connectors and
a more compact design, as well as digital AV equipment that can wirelessly transmit high-
definition video. Typical Home Applications
include:
