I. Introduction: 

A. Lowering the drinking age to 18 would solve many problems

B. It would stop most illegal sales of this products, stop most underage drinking and

if you are considered a legal adult at 18 in the eyes of the government then you

should make these choices for yourself.

C. When something is illegal it seems for desirable to a minors eyes.

I. Supporting Paragraph #1 (reason #1): 18 is the age of adulthood in the US

A. Adults should be able to make their own decisions about alcohol and tobacco

consumption

B. Turning 18 means receiving rights and responsibilities of adulthood like voting,

being on a jury, marriage, joining the military, etc.

II. Supporting Paragraph #2 (reason #2): There are fewer drunk driving accidents and

fatalities in countries with the drinking age at 18

A. In the US, 31% of road traffic deaths involve alcohol. This is higher than

other countries with their age set to 18.

B. In France 29%, Great Brititan 16%, Germany 9%, China 4% and Israel 3%.

II. Supporting Paragraph #3 (reason #3): Lowering the drinking age would diminish the

thrill of breaking the law to get a drink

A. Normalizing alcohol consumption as something done responsibly

B. It will make drinking alcohol less of a thrill for young adults entering college or

the workforce

II. Counterarguments Paragraph (may need more than one): having the drinking age at 21

does reduce alcohol use by those under 21, leads to more traffic accidents

under 21.
