Ready to try something you probably haven't seen
before? Here’s a striking necklace worked in a lacy
technique the author calls Albion stitch, after the
ancient name for her British homeland. We think
you'll love the challenge as much as the results.
Albertine Necklace
PENDANT
1) FINIALS. Use l' of thread to string
JE, IF, and 3A, leaving a4" tail; pass
back through the F and E.to forma picot
fringe, String IE and IB: pass back
through the E just strung (fig. 1). Repeat
the thread path several times to re-
inforce. Secure the thread snd trim.
Set aside.
Repeat to form a second finial, this time
starting with IE and 1A only
2) BODY. Work Albion stitch, then
embellish it to form the body of the
pendant:
Round 1: Use 6’ of thread to string 24B,
leaving a 6” tail. Tie the working and
tail threads together to form a tight
circle. Exit from the first B strung.
Round 2: String 3B: skip the last B strung
and pass back through the next 2B to
form a fringe. Pass through the last B
exited and the following 3B of the
previous round. Repeat seven times
for atotal of 8 fringes. Weave through
beads to exit from the third Badded
in this round (Fig.2-blue thread). Note
‘The spaces between the fringes form
squares.
Round s: String 2B and pass through the
tip ofthe next fringe in the previous
round: repeat seven
all the fringes in the previous round,
Pass through the round again to
reinforce; exit from the third B of any
fringe in the previous round (fig.2—
red thread).
Rounds 4-7: Repeat Rounds 2 and 3
twice. Exit from the 2B added in.

Repeat this alternating sequence to
form a otal of 12 fringes. Weave
through beads to exit from a B at the
end of any fringe, Pass through all the
end B to connect the fringes, but
before tightening, place the finial
with the picot within the beadwork so
the pieot sticks out; tighten the bead-
work between the 2 rondelles (Fig. 5).
Secure the thread and trim.

Start 4 of new thread that exits from
any B in Round 7. Repeat the entire
step to form the other end, using the
remaining finial with the Aend
exposed. Exit from an end B of
Round 7, Don' trim the thread.
3) BAIL. Workembellished Albion
stitch to form s ring bail off the top of
the pendant
Round: String 27B, skip 3B in the ring
along the top of the pendant, and pass
through the next B. Pass back through

4) RING. Form a ring to attach the bail
to the necklace:
Round: Use 4’ of thread to string 288,
leaving a 4” tail, Pass through the
pendant’ bail, then tie the working
and tail threads together to form a
tight circle around the bail. Exit from
the first B strung.
Rownd2: String 2B, skip the last B
strung, pass back through the next B,
and pass through the last B exited in.
Round I and the next 2B; repeat to
add a total of 15 fringes. Weave
through beads to exit from the second
B added in this step,
Round3: String IB and pass through the
second B of the nex! fringe in Round
2: repeat to connect all the fringes.
_Embeltish: Embellish all the squares in
the ring as with the pendant’s body,
this time using G instead of F. Set the
pendant aside,
CHAIN
5) BEADED-BEAD SECTION. Work
Albion stitch to form the beaded-bead
portion of the chain:
Round 1: Use 6' of thread to string 12B,
leaving 6" tail. Tie a knot with the
working and tal threads to form a tight
circle, Exit from the third B added.
Round2: String 3B, pass back through
the second and first B just added, and.
continue through the last B exited in
Round | and the following 3B; repeat
three times to adda total of 4 fringes.
Weave through beads to exit from the

that aligns with a Round 2 fringe.
String 1B, 2A, IB, IC, 1B, 9A, and one
half ofthe clasp. Skip the 9A just added
and pass back through the rest of the

base round B exited and weave through
the next 3B (Fig. 9-blue thread). String 1B
and 2A, pass through the IB/IC/IB/9A,
originally strung in this step, pass back
through the next B/C/B and the 2A and

Peyote-stitch tubes take on a surprising
elegance when worked in metallic-finished
cylinder beads with an occasional crystal
accent. Line up a series for a dramatic
bracelet or highlight a chosen few
ona simple neckwire.
TECHNIQUES

1) BASIC TUBES. Create and fill 16 or
‘more even-count peyote-stitch tubes
ng 4 of thread, string.
Rows t and:

Rows3-16: Work It rows in even-eount
peyote stitch, using I bead in each
stiteh.
Zip: Fold the tube lengthwise to align
the beads inthe first and last rows and
zip the beadwork into a tube. Remove
the tension bead, secure the threads,
and trim,
Fil Using size 8° seed beads, fill the
tubes to strengthen them, leaving /«"
(about | beads width) empty at each
end of the tube. Dab glue on the first
and las filler bead in the tube to keep
the beads in place
Repeat the entire step fifteen times
using C, D, E, F, G, and H fora total
of IG tubes, making 2 or 3 tubes with,
each color,
2) TUBES WITH BICONES. Stitch 7 or
‘more even-count peyote-sliteh tubes
with embedded bicones, using I eylinder

using any color of eylinder bead.
Row 3: Work one row in even-count
peyote stitch.
Row 4: Work 4 peyote stitches, exiting
the fourth cylinder in Row 3. Skip the
fifth stitch by passing through the
nearest cylinders in Rows 2 and 3.
Continue across the row in peyote
stitch (Fig. tbl thread).
Row 5: Work 6 peyote stitches. String
| bicone: pass through the nearest
eylinder in Row 4 and continue in
peyote stitch across the row (Fg,
red thread).
Row 6: Work 3 peyote sitches. String the
fourth cylinder; pass through the eyl-
inder directly below it in Row 4 and
through the one just added to square-
stitch it in place. Pass through the
bicone. String I cylinder and square-
shit tothe next cylinder in Row 4.
Continue in peyote stitch across the
row (Fig, 2-blue thread)
Row 7: Work 6 peyote stitches, pass
through the bicone, and continue in
peyote stitch across the row (Fig. 2—
red thread),
Row 8: Work 3 peyote stitches. String the
fourth cylinder: square-stitch itt the

Lay the tubes side by side, arranging the
colors as desired, Place the tubes with
bicones toward the center of the brace~
Jet. Start 3 of new thresd on an end
tube and weave through beads to exit a
cylinder along the top edge. Square~
stiteh this cylinder toa top-edge eylin-
der on the second tube (g.4). Repeat
with the next pair of eylinders along the
top edge. Weave through beads to
square-stitch the third tube to the see
‘ond in the same way. Continue, joining
all the tubes along the top edge. Note:
When joining tubes with bicones, make
sure each bicone is facing frontward and
centered before square-stitehing the top
‘edges in place.

4) CLASP. Attach the slide clasp:
Start 2' of new thread in an end tube.
Weave through beads to exit the fifth
cylinder from the top edge on the side

4A, the end loop of one halfof the clasp,
and 5A; pass through the cylinder ast

inforce it. Weave through beads to exit
the ninth eylinder from the starting
end. Repeat, connecting the clasp
