Aon ‘Why interlocking and freestanding puzzles? 1 like puzales. These days, when I'm not making my own puzzles, im likely wo be doing someone ches I did, however, plan to g9 into business designing and making jigsaw puzales. I bought «scroll aw because Ihave always liked wood and because I was fascinated by the sro saw work Tsu at ar shove. In 1989, when my family and I made oue annual tek to nearby Renaisunee Fig 1 bought a five-piece pusale asa sowvenit, While it was ‘was not interlock 10 you really ki up. ‘When I began designing my owe puzzles, 1 decided all of them would be intctlocking, 30 that they could be handled. The puzaes in this ‘book reflect that decision I maul in 1990—all ‘of them are intetlocking. This means that, once you have the puzzles in a standing position, you ean pick chem up by any piece and curn therm completely around without having them fall apart, But, you have ro make sure you keep them vertical and donit sip chem! ‘The first thing Teut out when I brought home that wonderful new toy, my First scroll say, vasa three-piece rabbit, Asa woodworker ‘of long standing, 1 used lumber I had in my ‘workshop. Ie was an old piece of 1 x4" pine. ‘One of the things I liked about the puzzle was that it was thick enough to stand, The concept of freestanding” pure stayed with me as 1 moved on to using hardwoods, ‘Why fantasy creatures? I bought my first copy of Edith Hamilton's Mythology when was about ten. I've been reading i ever since and have branched off into science fiction and fantasy. Most of the creatures in this book ate from Greek mythok ogy with afew additions fom European folklore, as wll as some Chinese dragons. TThe Welsh Dragon (featured on the cover and in the step-by-step section on page 6) was cone ofthe frst fantasy creautes I designed. Like many of my subsequ resulted from a would-be Deciding wha I sacte selling my puzzles becau ime what their interests were, (If you design a new puzzle, you might a8 well fone that people are likely vo buy:) Customes continued to ask for fantasy puzzles, which reinforced my own interest in them. Theie requests, combined with my save me a powerful reason fo Fanasy puzales, Why hardwoods? 1. They're naturally beautiful. As a lover of hardwoods, [have a natural aversion painting them because they're beautiful in their ‘own right. Besides that, hardwoods occur naturally ina wide vareyy of colors. Why cut a Welsh dragon out of a piece of pine and then pint it, when you can cut it from a red- colored wood? 2, The harder the wood, the less chip-out you get. The structure of hardwoods appears to ‘be more uniform, Uniform density makes your cutting more consistent. You'l spend less time ‘overall and end up with a more pleasing result. 43. The increased density also resuls in surface that can be more easily sanded to a silky, smooth finish. To parphrase something wwe sid in our fist book, Dinosaur Pussler forthe Seo Sa silky translates into sles at an at show. Tat r O bt etde® Mhaidral 2 Fantasy & Legend ‘Where can you buy hardwoods?
