Q3

The soft cliffs in Mytleville, Co. Cork, are particulary susceptible to erosion. In Ireland, the rate of
erosion along the most vulnerable parts of the coast is estimated at 0.2-1.6 metres per year. The
most susceptible coastal systems are sand dunes and soft cliffs. In some case, up to 10m of soft cliffs
can be around eroded during a single storm event.

There are a couple of method to protect the coastal:

1. Breakwaters

Breakwaters are structures constructed near the coasts as part of coastal management or to protect
an anchorage from the effects of both weather and longshore drift.

2. Groynes

A groyne is a rigid hydraulic structure built from an ocean shore (in coastal engineering) or from a
bank (in rivers) that interrupts water flow and limits the movement of sediment. It is usually made of
wood, concrete or stone.

3. Sea walls

A seawall (or sea wall) is a form of coastal defence constructed where the sea, and associated
coastal processes, impact directly upon the landforms of the coast. The purpose of a sea wall is to
protect areas of human habitation, conservation and leisure activities from the action of tides, waves
or tsunamis.

In this case, the third protection maybe is the most suitable:
