aim of the subject
The aim of the subject is to guide the student in developing the artistic and technical skills, and creative initiative
that characterize professional musicianship as performer and accompanist/ensemblist, able to perform repertory of highest
level of difficulty and participate in various ensembles and settings.
Improvisation: to develop required improvisation skills, an ability to think in and with sounds in self-expression,
immediate ensemble skills (instant responses to a partner), as well as to resolve.

1. year
The student performs 4 concert etudes in student evening or class concert during the study year, participates in master
classes as an active contributor and audience member, visits at least one student evening as an audience member.
Term 1:
1. Independently prepared compositions (from memory), compositions from the period after 1970 with a duration of at least
5 minutes.
2. A polyphonic work and extended composition, plus freely chosen etudes and pieces.
Examination E1: duration: 20-30 min. Perform from memory:
1. A polyphonic work.
2. An extended composition or a part thereof.
Term 2:
1. Two extended compositions in different styles, plus freely chosen etudes and pieces.
Examination E2: duration 25-40 min. Perform from memory at least two extended compositions.
2. year.
The student performs in at least one student evening or class concert during the study year, participates in master
classes as an active contributor and audience member, and visits at least one student evening per term as an audience
member.
Term 3:
Examination E3: duration 25-40 min. Perform from memory compositions from Master's Degree Examination program.|||||Program

- 2 extended compositions (sonata, suite, concerto, etc.),

1st semester
- a significant work by a 20th or a 21st-century composer.

- a free concert program approx. 30-45 min in length, with a clear theme or concept.

- 1st or 2nd and 3rd movement from a substantial Romantic or contemporary concerto or part of masters examination program
(for instance unaccompanied Bach and another work).|||||Term 1 examination program:
- a classical or romantic extended composition,
- 2 polyphonic works or parts thereof,
- 1-2 modern compositions.
Technical assessment: scales, triads and cadences in all keys.
Term 2 examination program:
- a cyclical extended composition from the 20th century,
- fugue form,
- a romantic character piece.
Term 3 examination program:
The student performs a freely chosen program of 15-20 minutes, containing 70% of the program of the Master's examination
and a composition from Estonian music. |||||The student performs at least twice during a term and passes technical
assessments, conducted once per term. For examination, perform a program of at least 20 min.
Requirements for technical assessment:
1. Scales
The student is able to play, in selected tempo, three main rhythm figures (eighths, triplets and sixteenth notes) and
three main articulations (legato, detache and staccato) of all scales.
2. Etudes
The examination panel selects two of the prepared five etudes for performance.
3. Orchestral parts
10 parts should be performed in each assessment.
Technical assessment is graded. The grade of technical assessment constitutes 30% of the grade of specialty examination.
|||||The student refines his/her percussion technique and musical tastes over two terms.
Repertoire is selected in accordance with the student's preferences, giving priority to Estonian percussion music, if
possible.
For examinations, the student should perform a program of at least 25 minutes (preferably composed for percussion
instruments). |||||The student participates actively in the work of the department, performs in at least one student
evening or class concert during the study year, participates in master classes as an active contributor and audience
member, and visits at least one student evening per term as an audience member.
Term 1 examination program:
- 1 aria from an oratorio,
- 3 freely chosen arias,
- 2 romances.
One aria in the program should include a recitative.
Term 2 examination program:
- 1 aria from an oratorio,
- 3 freely chosen arias,
- 3 romances.
One aria in the program should include a recitative.
Term 3 examination program:

In both terms, the performance program should include at least 6 different compositions, representing the following:
- Estonian choral music,

- Western classics,
- a composition from the 20th or 21st century.
Furthermore, the following should be submitted in each term:
1. Colloquium:
a) performing the specialty program - at least 2 compositions from memory;
b) singing voice parts from choral score, considering the specific requirements of the work of a choirmaster, i.e.,
- ability to sing all parts,
- ability to sing chords vertically,
- ability to play some parts and sing one part if necessary (combined playing and singing),
- ability to conduct and sing at the same time.
2. A written analysis of a composition in the program, discussing the following aspects:
- a brief overview of the life, works, style, etc., of the compositor;
- a brief presentation of the lyricist and an analysis of lyrics;
- coherence between music and lyrics;
- form;
- harmony and polyphony;
- rhythm in connection with lyrics;
- choral technical problems and how to overcome them;
- interpretational ambitions, performance plan with a score.
3. One concert review (1-2 pages), presenting the reviewerĀ’s musical analysis and assessment of the following
elements:
- integrity and idea of the concert;
- an analysis and assessment of: a) the conductor, b) the repertoire, c) the performance.

Term 1 examination (winter) - conducting with piano accompaniment.


Term 2 examination (spring) - conducting for about 12 minutes with piano accompaniment and about 12 minutes with a choir.

2. year
- conducting with piano accompaniment 6 different compositions
|||||Orchestral conducting: semesters I and II:
The following are to be worked through on both semesters:
- two entire symphonies by the Viennese Classics,
- one movement from a symphony by Brahms,
- accompaniment of an instrumental concerto or a concert aria.
At the exams, the student is required to perform a movement from a symphony or a work with an accompaniment.
Semester III: to be worked through:
- 4 large-scale works or parts of them, including a work by Mahler or R. Strauss or part of it,
- the accompaniment for an instrumental concerto or a concert aria.
At the exam, the student is required to perform a movement from a large-scale work or a work with an
accompaniment.||||||||||The student should perform to an audience at least once or twice during a term, participate in
master classes and other events related to the specialty.
The repertoire of term I and II should be modelled after a concert program and should include the following:
1. transcriptions of Baroque music or music of other eras,
2. modern compositions,
3. freely chosen pieces.
The examination program, duration 20-30 min, should be played from memory (as an exception, original compositions written
after 1975 may be played from notes).
Term 3: preparing the Master's Degree Examination program (MIX011). At the exam, the student is required to perform part
of the program, duration 20-30 min.|||||The student should perform to an audience at least once or twice during a term,
participate in master classes and other events related to the specialty.
The terms conclude with an examination, where the student should perform:
- an extended composition or a part thereof,
- 2-6 pieces of different character, incl. at least 1 from the Baroque era and 1 from modern music.|||||The student should

specialty.
Term 1
- Performance of chamber works by composers of the 18th century or the 1st half of the 19th century,
- Playing in at least one larger ensemble (trio, quartet, quintet, sextet),
- Learning to play three compositions during the term.
For examination, perform one chamber music composition of at least 15 min.
Term 2
- Performance of chamber works by composers of 19th century,
- work on phrasing, sound and facture in romantic extended compositions,
- learning to play two compositions during the term.
For examination, perform a program of at least 30 min. The program can include one long or several shorter compositions.
Term 3
The compositions of at least 20 min including one work by Estonian composer |||||The student should perform to an audience
at least once or twice during a term, participate in master classes and other events related to the specialty.
Term 1
- Work on content, ensemble and style issues in German Lied,
- Playing diverse repertoire (German, Russian, French, English, etc., songs).
For examination, perform a program of 20-25 minutes with a vocalist.
Term 2
- Work on orchestral accompaniments in the songs of 19th and 20th century composers,
- Playing opera arias.
For examination, perform a program of 30 minutes with a vocalist, including songs by at least two composers and one opera

Upon completing the module, the student will be able to:

5 "exellent" grade is given to a student who:
- flawlessly performs a compliant program,
- performs the program with artistic persuasiveness, individuality and stage presence,
- demonstrates remarkable technical mastery and command of instrument-specific elements of interpretation in the
performance,
- performs the program with a good sense of style and musical taste,
- conveys the content and structure of the composition with artistic expressiveness and conviction,
- is notable for vivacity, ability to focus, quick musical responses and bright ideas.
4 "very good" grade is given to a student who:

- performs a compliant program with refinement,
- performs the program in a sensitive, focused, inspiring and bright manner,
- performs the program without any notable specialty-related weaknesses or errors,
- demonstrates elements of an individual interpretation style.
3 "good" grade is given to a student who:
- performs a compliant program, with knowledge of facture and style,
- in general, performs the program fluently, making no major errors in lyrics or music, but without an artistic touch and
individuality,
- performs the program somewhat inconsistently: successful musical sections alongside with minor technical errors and
musical fragility, uncertainty or focusing problems.
2 "satisfactory" grade is given to a student who performs a compliant program but:
- the performance includes random, uneven and fragile elements in technical and musical terms,
- the performance lacks brightness and artistic persuasiveness,
- has problems with rhythm, pulse and style.
1 "sufficient" grade is given to a student who performs a compliant program but:
- experiences notable difficulties in performing the compositions,
- leaves the musical and artistic qualities of the performance on the background,
- has major problems with the fluency of performance.
