- conventional Soxhlet (Rincón et al.

- (mechanochemical assisted

- ortheir use in active packaging
to extend the shelf life of food
(Badei et al.,2002; Gallo et al.,
2010; Srinivasan, 2005;

- A recent study showed that
simple alcohols(methanol or
ethanol) are environmentally
preferable solvents (Capello et
al., 2007).
- Ethanol can be obtained by
fermentation of sugar-containing
feeds, starchy feed materials
and lignocellulosic materials
(Savaiko, 2004);

- Traditional natural products

extraction methods (e.g.
Soxhlet, liquid-liquid and solid-
liquid extractions) require large
volumes of solvent and energy
and lengthy extraction
procedures. They can also lead
to the deleterious degradation of
labile compounds. Nowadays,
new processes are being
developed to deal with these
problems, improving
the reproducibility of compound
recovery as well (Kerem et al.,
2005).
- These new technologies include
microwave-assisted extraction
(MAE) or ultrasonic-assisted
extraction (UAE). UAE has three
main advantages: increased
extraction performance,
reduction in process time and
nonthermal decomposition of
heat-sensitive compounds.
These are due to the cavitation
phenomena, the
mechanochemical mixing effect
and the fact that no temperature
input is required. There are
some studies reporting the
successful extraction of phenolic
compounds and antioxidants
from different plant materials
through this technique (Ince
et al., 2013; Londono-Londono et
al., 2010; Shalmashi, 2009).
- Microwave irradiations methods
are considered an important
green chemistry technique
- Mechanochemical assisted
extraction (MCAE) basically
consists of a mechanochemical
processing of plant materials
with a solid reagent (usually
carbonated salts) to obtain
mechanochemical composites
before extraction in solvent (Zhu
et al., 2011a).
