QUERRIES & THEIR REPLIES ON HIGHWAYS

1. Can we import Genio format of design from MX in to Concept Station?

The following file format contents can be directly imported including alignments in Concept
Station:

2. Can we import the dxf files of ground survey?

The Supported raster data and terrain files which can be imported in Concept station are:

One can convert dxf into dgn and then attach a dgn file in the background.
3. Can we import DTM (Triangulation) from MX in to Concept station?
Yes, Concept Station does support import of *.dtm file extension as shown in rep ly to ab o ve
query.
4. As the Openroad concept is almost template based, are the templates are according to the IRC
for Indian version?
By default, there are variety of standard templates available in the template library of concept
station for 2-lane/4-lane/6-lane/Expressways with many combinations of median, guardrail
etc. They can be simply edited to get as per required or new templates can be created eas ily
within minutes as per IRC Codes. Template creation window is very simple as easy to use.
5. Can the Junction templates can be modified as per IRC standards (acceleration, Deceleration
lanes, fillet radius, Islands, markings etc)
At Conceptualization stage using concept station one can edit the basics like fillet radius,
inside and outside circle radius, length etc. Ramp designer tool is available for bridges. One
can also add auxiliary lanes using them. Detailed roundabout/junction design can b e d o ne in
OpenRoads Designer (ORD).
6. Can Round about templates can also be modified as per IRC standards?
Roundabouts here are placed as element with limited customization like inner circle radius,
outer circle radius, toggle tilted plane, toggle apron.
7. Can we add bus bays and Truck lay bays to the Concept plan, or their templates are available for
the same, if so, can we modify according to the IRC?
Not exactly, but yes, we do have a catalogue browser and component builder in which user
can import the 3d objects from external files and use them wherever required.
8. Can we get the quantities at desirable chainage intervals for every individual item like different
pavement layers, earthworks (cut & fill) etc.
Quantities are processed in one go in Concept Station. For desired chainage wise quantities at
desired intervals, one has to do it by using quantities by named boundaries in OpenRoads
Designer.
9. It is shown to put the Crash barriers and lighting, markings in the demo. Can we export the
quantities of the same which are indicated in the Concept design to Excel?
Not exactly but yes, we do have an option to keep them as an allowances (%) of project
overall cost.
10. Can we specify the kerbs in the medians, Junction islands and can we get the quantities of the
same?
Yes, we get the quantities of road kerb (to be present in template only and not of
roundabouts) in detailed report.
11. Can we give the avenue plantation details in plan as tree line with tree spacing and multiple
rows and can we get the numbers of the trees for entire length of project?
Not exactly, but yes, we do have a catalogue browser and component builder in which use r
can import the 3d objects from external files and use them wherever required. Follo win g file
formats are easily supported in concept station for such components:

12. Can we specify the different sign boards (any temple plate for sign boards for minor junct ions,
major junctions, roundabout, sharp curves etc) if not there can we place the same in available
junction templates?
See Answer to query number 11.
13. Can we specify the taper length between the different road widths in order to change from
cross section to another?
Tapering is Provided automatically by software algorithm. By default, it is mostly 120m
approx. We may not change the tapering length. (Tapering is provided by using “Road
Template” tool in “Road Placement” menu.) User customized standards and preferences can
be expected in upcoming release.
14. If we add the Concrete drains of "V-shape" or "Rectangular shape" to the alignment, can we get
the cut quantity for accommodating the drain
Not Exactly, as drainage placement tool is not directly available in the Concept station. Cut
quantity will be calculated and combined in overall cutting estimated in detailed report.
However, to see separate cut quantity, only concrete drain made in separate template can b e
placed without lanes in separate alignment first (Workaround)

15. If we add toe drains, can we get the cut qty of the drain excavation?
See reply to answer of query no.15
16. If we have restricted RoW (Right of way / road land) can we add the toe walls, and can we get
the toe wall quantity
Wall can be added using templates and its quantity will be clubbed in overall concrete
quantity.
17. If we specify the limits of the road land, is the concept station will restrict the embankment
slopes up the limit of land and can put the toe walls with foundation in to the ground to the
specified depth. Can we get the toe wall quantity?
Yes, the width of embankment can be restricted by changing the slope and wid th o f cu t an d
fill end condition lines of template. Wall Quantity will be clubbed in overall concrete quantity
in the detailed report.
18. In case of Road template (Typical cross section) with Retaining walls (RCC or Reinforced earth
walls) can we get the Retaining wall quantity (In case of RCC walls in Cum of Concrete and in
case of Reinforced wall in Square meters). First of all, can we specify them in Concept station.
We get the retaining wall detailed quantity as shown in the picture below:

Following Walls, we can place in our template:

QUERRIES ON STRUCTURES

19. In bridges can we get the Concrete Qty structure wise.

Yes, we get the concrete quantity structure wise only.

20. Are there any templates for Box type culverts & pipe culverts?
Tool for placing box culvert is available in Structure Placement tool. No, template is not
available separately for box culvert. Following customization is available for box and pipe
culvert as shown below in image.

21. Can we get the other foundations like "well foundation, pipe foundation" templates? Can we
specify the diameter of pile and well diameter and reinforcement in those structure
foundations?
No foundation and reinforcement cannot be configured here in concept station. Yes , we can
specify the pile diameter in concept station in the quick properties (information panel).
22. Is there any provision to give the reinforcement details for the structures and can we get the
steel Qty of those structures?
No, reinforcement details cannot be configured in concept station.
23. Can we add drains with a "preliminary design depth" and can we give drain wall widths and
reinforcement details? And can we get the quantities of Concrete and Steel of drains.
See answer of Query no. 14 to add drains in template. No adding of steel reinforcement
details and steel quantity estimation is currently not available.
24. Can we specify the Grade of Concrete for different components of the structure and can we get
the quantity of different grades of Concretes structure wise?
We get structure wise quantity of concrete and to specify different grades, we can simply
change names and set rates separately as required in quantity configuration in backstage.

25. And finally, "Does OpenRoads Designer do what OpenRoads Concept Station can do." What is
the difference.
OpenRoads Designer is used for more detailed and precise engineering of road like accurately
fixing of alignments over survey data, template creation with its end condition rules in
corridor. ORD Concept Station is best for preliminary feasibility stage study of project to h ave
a engineering estimation before the main design with quantity estimates. It is very qu ick an d
can be used for bidding of project tenders, feasibility reports etc. There is a complete
interoperability (Import and Export) between both the products. One can completely take th e
data from concept station to OpenRoads Designer without any data loss. Information of
design is maintained.
