LEAVE IT in the exam room.nguage Exam November 2012, The C1 level oral test BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE TEST Duration ofthe test: 25 minutes. Candidates aretest in pairs and converse with each other, «a, Warm-up: Examiner asks each candidate a few ice-breaking questions (age, studies/work, hobbies) [not assessed, 1 minute forboth) b. Open-ended response: The candidate responds to a single question posed by the examiner expressing and justifying his her opinion about particular issueltopic. 4 minutes for both] . Mediation and open-ended conversation: Candidates carry outa conversation in order to complete a task based on input froma Greek text. (15 minutes for both] Examiner/ candidate roles: In Activity 1 open-ended response) the examiner does not interact with candidates; s/he poses a question and each candidate responds. In Activity 2 (mediation and open-ended conversation) the examiner does not normally interact with the candidates; sine sets the task and the candidates interact with each other. However, ifone candidate is unable ‘tocarry outthe task, the examiner takes the role of the interlocutor. TEST MATERIALS ‘The Candidate Booklet The Candidate Booklet contains ‘Information aboutthe testand guidelines on howto carr itout(pp. 2-4). ‘+ The Oral TestAssessment Criteria Grid (p 5) © Greek texts on pp. 6-16. The heading on each page indicates the theme and context of talk prompted by these texts. The first half of the Candidate Booklet (pages 6 to 10) contains the Greek texts that Candidate A must read inorder todo this activity. The second half of the Booklet (pages 11 to 15) contains the Greek texts that Candidate B must read in order to do the activity. The last page (page 16) contains extra texts, which are relevant to those on pages 8 and 13, They may be used if, atthe end ofthe test day, there are three candidates left, in which case Activity 2 will have to be conducted with three candidates instead of two. In such a case, assign one of the tasks connectedto the texts on pages 8 and 13 and also use the relevant exton page 16. The Examiner Pack ‘The Examiner Pack contains: ‘© the test items, i.e. questions for Activity 1 and the tasks for Activity 2, the Interlocutor Frame for the C1 level oral test, ‘Areminder of potential trouble spots during the exam, the Rating Scale for C1 level. ‘TEST PROCEDURE ‘© Throughoutthe exam, there are two assessors and two candidates inthe examination room. ‘+ Both assessors evaluat the candidate and filin their par ofthe "Oral Production Evaluation Form ‘* Theassessorwho has the role of Evaluator sits on the side andis silent. S/he lstens, observes, takesnotes, and gives amark or each candidate's performance, using the “Oral Production Evaluation Form’ ‘+ The assessor who has the role of Examiners the one who sits facing the two candidates and who conducts the test, interacting with them. Sihe rates candidates when they have left the examination room. So, besides being the Examiner, she has the role of Evaluator? ‘+ The candidates take tums in doing the required task frst. Study the Candidate Booklet and the Examiner Pack inaroommade available for you. ‘Work wth a colleague and discuss the tasks and texts, helping each other understand what each taskrequires. Role-play one or two tasks and see how they work for you. ‘Acquaint yourself thoroughly withthe Inferloculor Frame provided inthe Examiner Pack Examiners are expected to have prepared themselves for the test by having become familiar with the information contained in the Handouts developed forthe Oral Examiner Seminars. However, sludy carefully the Rating Scale in he Examiner Pack to remind yourselfofthe assessment criteria. Also: ‘© Find outin which examination room you wll be conducting the oral test and who your co-assessoris going tobe. Decide which one of youwilhave the role of Examiner firs. ‘* Make sure that the desks in the examination room are set up properly, so that: > candidates are siting side by side, > the Examinerisfacing the candidates, > thedeskof Evaluator is atsome distance from the candidates but llows visual contact with them, ‘© Make sure you have all the material you need to condust the test. Bring your Candidate Booklet with you ito the ‘examination roomas well asthe Examiner Pack containing the questions and tasks. ‘+ Make sure also that there are two more Candidate Booklets in the room, one for each ofthe two candidates. In ‘case there are three candidates, give the third candidate your co-assessor's booklet. During the Oral Test remember Inthe Examiner Pack Activity 1 ‘* ForActvty 1, there are questions for younger and older candidates, Choose different question for each candidate aking into account what you know about him/her. Activity 2 + ForActvity2, there are atleast two tasktypes tobe used with each pairof Greek ext. When using the material: ‘© When carrying out Activity 1, donot change or rephrase the question. If one candidate hesitates, repeat the ‘question more slowly this time, clarify or explain one word but ony if you are asked to + InActiity 2, ifthe conversation comes toa halt, does not flow or if one candidate seems tobe holding the floor without allowing the other candidate to participate, intervene to facilitate the flow of conversation. ‘* fone ofthe two candidates is not relaying information from the Greek text, it may make the decision making process impossible. Therefore, you might have to intervene in order to remind himner that she must relay information from the text. ‘© Ifone of the two candidates is completely unable to respond tothe requirements of Activity 2, then the examiner takes there ofthe intelocutorin order to carry outthe task withthe other candidate. ‘© Ingeneral, when carrying out Activities 1 and 2, you should not change the question or task assigned, but you are allowed to encourage and to help the candidate when facing problems with a specific task. USING THE OFFICIAL ASSESSMENT FORM Make sure the candidates’ names and code numbers are on their respective forms. Both Evaluators mark the boxes inthe columnsin ball point pen (black orblue). ‘The first person to give a mark for the candidate's performance, Evaluator 1 (the person not conducting the test but sitting silent on the side) fils in the boxes on the leftside column of the Form.
