Q1 (a) Ninety-three percent of people in UTHM have gone through pre-school. If a random
sample of 47 Malaysians is selected at random, find the probability that
(i) Exactly nineteen people finished secondary school education.
(ii) Less than three people finished secondary school education.
(4 marks)

(b) At the hostel guard record, on average, the number of students caught smoking in the
hostel is 7. Find the probability that
(i) exactly four students per night.
(ii) at most two students per night.
(iii exactly three students for two nights.

Q2 (a) The average life of a certain battery is 840 hours and standard deviation of 145 hours.
Assume that the life of the battery approximately follows a normal distribution. Find the
probability that a random sample of 19 batteries will have an average life more than 753
hours.
(5 marks)

(b) A sample of 50 people shows an average income of RM11358 with a population


standard deviation of RM124. Find a 99% confidence interval for the mean income of
people.
