GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP

Abel Mutai, bronze medallist in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the London Olympics, was
competing in a cross-country race in Spain in 2012.
He was winning the race easily, but he stopped running about 30 metres before the finishing line,
because he thought he’d won the race.
The crowd were shouting at him, they were telling him to carry on.
Mutai didn’t understand them because he didn’t speak any Spanish.
A Spanish runner, Ivan Fernandez, was the second in the race behind Mutai. He slowed down
told Mutai to keep running.
Mutai started running again and crossed the line first. After this, Ivan Fernandez told “I didn’t
deserve to win it, I did what I had to do. He was the rightful winner.”
