Challenge 2
Design of a refrigeration process

NOTE: This challenge should be finished for the next tuesday 18th February at 9:00pm and it will

be made by groups.

Why Aspen Plus should be used for designing chemical processes!

Challenge 2 2

An important refinery of vegetable oils in Bogota needs to design a refrigeration system based

on ammonia for complementing a cristallization process. Thus, the refinery contacts to the next

generation of chemical engineers from Utadeo (You!!) to simulate a refrigeration system (figure

1) using ammonia based on 100 kg/h. The outlet pressure of the compressor is 1 MPa with an

isentropic efficiency of 90%. Ammonia is obtained at 10C from condenser and a pressure drop

of 0.9 MPa is obtained in the expansion valve while the outlet temperature of ammonia in the

evaporator is −5C. According to the requirement you should provide to the refinery the following

information:

1. Mass and energy balances of all streams

2. The phases all of streams

3. A representation of the cycle of refrigeration in an Entalpy-Pressure diagram (Remember that

enthalpy calculation depends on the reference state)
