Title: AVANT GARDENER Painting Original Location: The Other Art Fair by Saatchi Art in Dallas Description/Interpr When I look at this painting my immediate thought is that it etation provokes the relaxed feeling you get when you spend time outside, along with the constant feeling of wonder. Wonder of what will happen next. I see a flock of birds flying over the open land, and away from the storm that is about to come. I also see farms and homes in the in the image. I think that the artist was trying to say that as free as nature is, there is also chaos within it. Storms come and go, they cause destruction, animals loose their homes, or have to hide within them. The land that the storm crosses either needs the rain, or gets too much, and the people that own the land have to deal with it accordingly. Use in Teaching: This would be a really good piece to teach students about abstract art, and multi medium use. The artist was able to an entire story through his piece and I think it is important for students to be able to do the same. I would initially show this to my students and ask them what they of it. I would want them to share what they observe, and why/how they observed it. I want them to be able to recognize how the artist was able to convey what the students saw (what mediums were used, how were they used, how did he manipulate them?). Then we would discuss the different mediums, and all the different ways that they can be used. I would then have my students make a list of a few “big ideas” that they want to get across in a piece of work, with mediums they would use next to them. From there, we would get started in a multi-medium project, on a 18”x 24” canvas.
