In their first encounter, Liu Yuan found Li Qing house-sitting a nice house. After an
argument, they parted ways and the next day, Liu Yuan found Li Qing having just been
robbed. Afterwards, he told her that she should head back to China, because America is
not at nice as she thinks it might be. He helped her by letting her stay at his mobile home
and bought her a plane ticket home. Ultimately, Li Qing decided that it was too early for
her to give up and ended up getting her own place and a job at BMW.

二、 刘元和李青第二次相遇发生了什么事？刘元邀请李青跟他一起做什么工作？结果怎样？

The second time they met, they bumped into each other at a grocery store parking lot. Then,
when they were driving together, she nearly got a traffic ticket. Then, while they were going to
lunch, they walked into a robbery. Later that day, Liu Yuan came to BMW and asked Li Qing to
join a travel agency company that his friend was starting, but that turned out to be a scam to
traffic illegal immigrants from China. After she discovered all this and got out of the hands of the
police, Li Qing told Liu Yuan to never talk to her again.

三、 刘元和李青第三次重逢(chóngféng, reunite)是怎么发生的？ 结果怎样？

Liu Yuan posted an ad in the newspaper to see Li Qing. He pretended he was blind, which Li Qing
was initially mad about, but probably realized she missed him and his jokes too. Eventually, they
ended up running a Chinese-teaching business together.

四、 李青是怎样发现自己对刘元有感情的？结果怎样？

When Liu Yuan pretended that he had a fiancée, Li Qing knew she had feelings for Liu Yuan.
Eventually, they decided to become a couple because of this.

五、 电影最后，刘元决定回国，为什么？他打算带李青跟他一起回国吗？为什么？结果呢？

Liu Yuan decided to return to China because his mom was very sick. He decided to not bring Li
Qing with him because he didn’t want to keep bringing bad luck into her life. Eventually, she
came with him without his knowing.
六、 刘元移民美国多年， 你觉得他的生活过得怎么样？他的故事真实地反映了(fǎnyìng
reflects realistically)第一代（generation）移民的生活吗？为什么？
I think Liu Yuan’s life in America was not very fulfilling, because he was just doing lots of random
jobs, a lot of which had no meaning or purpose to him. At the same time, I think this somewhat
realistically reflects what happens to first-generation immigrants to America. My grandfather
was a first-generation immigrant, and he worked many random jobs including being both a
teacher, a custodian, and a tofu-farmer. But first-generation immigrants tend to work very hard
because they know that their hard work will eventually pay off, if not for them, for their
children.

七、 电影也反映了一点美国人的生活和美国的社会文化，你觉得真实吗？为什么？这反映
了中国人对美国什么样的认识（perception）?

I think the movie depicts Americans as very chill, laid-back people who have high aspirations. It
was very interesting to see how America is depicted from a Chinese point of view. In particular,
there was one scene where Liu Yuan talked about how Americans only think of themselves
whereas Chinese think of their family first, hence the different in naming order. But I think this
movie does offer a very interesting perspective on the immigrant experience, which from the
beginning of the movie, was not glamorous or sensationalized at all.
