Foreword

B+H has been designing distinguished sport projects for 34 years beginning with the Variety
Village in Scarborough, an athletics facility for the disabled and predecessor to the internationally
award winning Abilities Centre completed in 2012. This work has been a growing enthusiasm
in our studios for a number of reasons but not least, the passion from the stakeholders and
users behind each project. Whether it’s a community centre, a one rink hockey arena, a 33,000
seat football stadium or a major international event like the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am
Games, the energy and purpose driving each project is similar and often based in a small group
of tireless believers in the rewards of sport and physical recreation.

It’s not easy to get these projects built. But they are essential. Our many clients often put weeks,
months or more personal effort in development of and fundraising for these facilities and events
innately aware of the social, health and indeed often economic benefits they will yield in their
neighborhoods and towns.

We have included in this small book a collection of our work culminating most recently in two
large scale city building projects. These are the new Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan,
the future home of the Saskatchewan Roughriders Canadian Football League franchise and
the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Sport Venues project which included master planning for the entire
event, overlay and facility planning and architecture for seven of the largest venues used for the
Toronto 2015 games. B+H is excited to offer this quick summary of our work, our qualifications
and as an introduction of our global firm with a 23 years legacy in China.

The CDT was a consortium of B+H (the Managing Partner of the CDT),
Brisbin Brook Beynon Architects and Moffat Kinoshita Architects

The Core Design Team (CDT) was a consortium of architectural firms retained
by Toronto’s 2008 Olympic Bid organization, TO-Bid. The Core Design Team’s
responsibilities were to lead the programming, planning and design of all
venues and facilities required for sports events and training that were part of
Toronto’s bid for the 2008 Olympic Summer Games. Working with TO-Bid from
December 1998 to July 2001, the CDT was comprised of B+H (the Managing
Partner of the CDT), Brisbin Brook Beynon Architects and Moffat Kinoshita
Architects.

Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan
American Games
INTRODUCTION
As Infrastructure Ontario’s selected prime Master
Planning, Planning, Design and Compliance (PDC)
consultant, B+H Architects played a wide-ranging
and vital role in ensuring that Toronto and 17
communities within an almost 200-km radius would
be ready to take on the world for the Games.
This prime role was amplified when the Abilities
Center was selected as the premier venue for
Parapan Am Sport and went on to win the
prestigious Global Award of Distinction from the
International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2013.
B+H AND THE GAMES
On an official visit to Toronto in March 2015, the
International Paralympic Committee’s chief executive
officer, Xavier Gonzalez, stated that Toronto was
exceptionally well prepared for the Pan Am and
Parapan Am Games. Marcel Aubut, head of the
Canadian Olympic Committee, expressed a similar
sentiment in June 2015. One month before the
July 10 opening ceremonies, he declared that the
Toronto 2015 games were already a “fantastic
success,” due in large part to the world-class
sporting venues built for the event and the
organizing committee’s thorough preparedness.
In May 2015, TO2015, the organizing committee for the
Toronto 2015 Games, issued its fourth-quarter financial
report 49 days before the start of the Games. TO2015
announced that they were approximately $53.5 million
under budget for capital infrastructure spending,
having spent $551.7 million of their $672-million capital
budget, with completion still pending at that point on
only two venues. (B+H was PDC consultant on one
of them, the CIBC Pan Am / Parapan Am Athletics
Stadium at Toronto’s York University, and had no
involvement on the other, the Pan Am Shooting Centre
in Innisfil, Ontario.) Completion on both of these venues
was expected well in advance of the Games, with the
final construction total remaining well under budget.
Our successful completion of our Games roles
demonstrates B+H’s ability to design buildings
that meet the highest criteria, often as Olympic
pre-qualification fields of play for international
competitive athletics, as well as reinforce the values
of Infrastructure Ontario’s LEED® Silver minimum
sustainability standard and track record of delivering
97 per cent of built projects on budget with 72 per
cent delivered early or on time to date. It also attests
to our strength in managing projects that have
numerous and diverse stakeholders and sponsors. This
project involved stakeholders from four municipalities,
two of Ontario’s largest universities, a professional
CFL franchise (the Hamilton Tiger-Cats), dozens
of accredited amateur sport organizations, the
Pan Am organizing committee, Toronto 2015, and
municipal, provincial and federal funding agencies.

Client Abilities Centre

The Abilities Centre was created with the objective to
be a global centre of excellence for practical knowledge
and insight into providing recreation, athletic and
performing arts facilities for people with varying degrees
of abilities and challenges. This complex is a world-class,
barrier-free, indoor facility catering to local, national and
international sporting events. Its key features include: a
field house which containing a walking/training track,
full-size basketball courts, a fitness facility, sensory
therapy room, life skills, art and music programs, and
performing arts components. It is a featured venue in
the Parapan Games component of Toronto's 2015 Pan/
Parapan American Games.

Markham Pan Am Centre

The Markham Pan Am Centre is a 13,700m2 facility that
will be the venue for the Water Polo and Badminton
events during the 2015 Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan
American Games. Featuring a 50m Olympic Pool and
permanent spectator seating for 2000, the design
of the facility has been guided by Legacy (Post
Games) considerations for optimal responsiveness
to community use. The project will seek LEED Silver
certification, and comply with FLAP (Fatal Light
Awareness Program) guidelines for Bird-Friendly
buildings. B+H is the Architect of Record for the
Markham Pan Am Centre.

Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games

Aquatics Centre

During the Games, the Facility will provide a high-
performance competition and training centre to
accommodate key events of the 2015 Pan/Parapan Am
Games. This facility will be host to Aquatics (Swimming,
Synchronized Swimming, and Diving), Fencing and
Modern Pentathlon (Swimming and Fencing). For the
2015 Parapan American Games it will host Swimming
and Sitting Volleyball events. As a Legacy Facility it will
provide a range of programming and facilities available
to sports and wellness interests including gymnasia
and multi-purpose program areas, fitness and training
facilities alongside a 50m competition pool, a 50m
training pool and a diving tank. The Facility will be used
for training, regional competition, tournament play,
leadership opportunities and specialized programs.
Community groups will access the facility either as
one time participants oras one of several anchor clubs.
B+H is the lead consultant of the Planning, Design and
Compliance (PDC) team for the Toronto 2015 Pan/
Parapan Am Games Aquatic Centre.

Pan/Parapan American Games Velodrome Milton is a
contemporary facility providing a competition venue
for cyclists, an ongoing national training facility, and a
field house for community. The Velodrome is expected
to demonstrate expertise in large-scale sports facilities
and become a vibrant and distinctive landmark
integrated with its surroundings through architectural
and urban design excellence and sustainable site
planning. In addition to hosting cycling training and
events, the building will function as community
cycling centre, as community basketball and volleyball
recreational and tournament centre, and will include a
public fitness component. A cycling related retail and
bike repair shop as well as a café open to all public will
complete the facility. B+H is the lead consultant of the
Planning, Design and Compliance (PDC) team for the
Pan/Parapan Am Games Velodrome.

The new Field Hockey venue will host the field
hockey competition during the Toronto 2015 Pan/
Parapan American Games. Located in the heart of the
University of Toronto, St. George Campus, the venue
provides 2 identical state-of-the-art Field Hockey
pitches.
Historical buildings and heritage trees provide the
backdrop for this FIH, Class 1, Global certified synthetic
field; currently the only one of its kind in Ontario. B+H
is the Architect of Record for the Pan/Parapan Am
Games Field Hockey at University of Toronto.

Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games

Etobicoke Olympium
Location Toronto, Canada

Client Infrastructure Ontario

The Etobicoke Olympium will be renovated and
improved to be used as a training site for aquatics
disciplines including swimming, water polo, diving and
synchronized swimming. Renovations of this facility
include the existing pool and improvements to the
mechanical and electrical systems, as well as updating
the main lobby to include a circulation desk and other
amenities. The Olympium is a multi-sport facility
that includes an Olympic-sized pool, a leisure pool,
gymnasium and fitness centre. Following the Games,
local residents will have access to much improved
facilities. B+H is the Architect of Record for Etobicoke
Olympium.

The Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games
Athletics Stadium will be a world class track and field
athletics centre designed and built to international
standards to host the 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games.
The stadium will be a memorable and highly appealing
form for spectators and athletes consisting of a 5,000
seat stadium, a new Competition Category 1 World
Championship level 400m track and field, a suite of
athlete support spaces and spectator amenities. The
stadium will also establish a new gateway for York
University with a pedestrian pathway linking a new
public transit station to the existing campus network.
A component of the project design and construction
parameters is energy efficiency and sustainability. The
building will attain a minimum standard of LEED Silver
and Toronto Green Standards Tier 1. B+H is the lead
consultant of the Planning, Design and Compliance
(PDC) team for the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan Am
Games Athletics Stadium.

American Games Soccer Stadium/

Tiger-Cats Football Stadium

The new Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton, Ontario
will host soccer events during the Toronto 2015 Pan/
Parapan American Games. The project includes a
complete replacement of the existing CFL Hamilton
Tiger-cat home stadium with a state-of-the-art modern
stadium facility, public amenity spaces, and parking
areas. Key components of the facility include two
major stand components, a combination FIFA and CFL
field of play, VIP Club space, VIP Private Suites, robust
general admissions amenities (concourses, concessions,
retail, and washrooms), modern HD broadcast
capabilities (in-house and professional production),
City of Hamilton offices, community groups offices,
Tiger-cat administration, and future professional
soccer offices. The new stadium will continue its role
as the Hamilton Tiger-cats home field, as well as serve
community recreation needs (soccer, football, etc.).

An Urban Contemporary Sports Village centered on a
Space Dome athletic field with orbiting sports venues
and public activity plazas. We arranged performance
and target driving range and indoor community body
fitting gym; standard football pitch and fields for other
ball games are on the west side of the site; 2 public
plazas – Constellation Plaza and Earth Plaza – are
designed at the north side of the site; the residential
community facing the landscaped golf course for
future development are on the south parcel of the site.

The purpose of the Project is to provide a world class eco ski retreat within the
existing habitat and typography that will act as a viable venture in itself, but also as
an anchor for a high class residential development. Located on a stunning mountain

Science & Technology Park of Yangcheng Lake
of Kunshan in Jiangsu Province, only 8.5 km from
downtown Kunshan. A proposed playground ,
administration building, library, student and teacher
apartments are planned to be constructed on campus.
The new campus can accommodate up to 1,800
students ranging from Kindergarten through to
High School, with another 450 vacancies for future
use. A plot of 2.7 ha has also been reserved for the
construction of a Cultural Exchange Centre. The centre
will provide a venue for academic visits, conventions,
lectures and exhibitions between the school and
external visitors.

High-performance sustainable design features

This project involved integrated planning, landscape,
architectural and interior design services to create
a new R&D facility for this company in Shanghai.
The common activity core building, located in the
centre of the site, contains recreational, service and
meeting facilities for the use of the whole campus.
The perimeter of the site is defined by four L-shaped
office blocks that frame the central open space,
outdoor recreational facilities and activity building.
Shaded walkways provide linkages between different
site facilities, and dense plantings are distributed
throughout the site creating a naturalized landscape
character.

This project is being custom designed and built for
the company by Industrial Park of Suzhou Science
and Technology Development Co., Ltd. The site is
located at southeast corner of SIS Park and upon
completion, will be used as its R&D center as well as
house their other related business functions. Phase I
of the project can accommodate 1,500 people, with
Phase II doubling that capacity to 3,000 people in total.
The project comprises a series of new amenities, and
will be integrated with existing buildings in SIS Park.
The Master Plan layout has the plot defined as three
individual units, with the west building being proposed
for Phase I and the remaining two buildings earmarked
for Phase II. Three staggered podiums on ground
level help define the three public areas, including a
west courtyard housing the Envisioning Center, which
celebrates arrival to the campus with a generous drop-
off area. A secluded courtyard on the north will blend
the campus with the existing landscape and enlarge the
central green axis, which runs east-west through the
park, providing a green pedestrian entrance. Finally, the
north courtyard will also house sports facilities, which
will include a soccer field and basketball court.

Our vision for the planning and design of The Beijing
International Sport City are meant to inspire and
provide vibrant active public spaces for the better
health of the community. This vision will be an example
for other cities to follow as an optimistic approach for
the future. Sport Facilities – The Athletic Centre and
Tennis Centre are integrated into the landscape to allow
activity at multiple levels and ensure the multi-sport
flexibility of the Buildings. The canopy connects the
two facilities forming an open air sport surface area
between and a sunken sport amphitheatre that the
Athletic Centre Courts open onto.

Located in a stunning building, the space presented
a fantastic canvas for spatial experiences. The scope
of the project included the health section, knowledge
section, restaurant and roof-top swimming pool. Our
vision for the company HQ, was to create a vertical
campus that put emphasis on catering to the present
and future ways of working. The two towers are
vertically interlinked, embracing each other through
bridges housing amenities that connect body and
mind. An elegant metaphor representing the social
networking experience that is at times virtual, but
also physical and involves a collaborative experience
between at least two entities.

B+H is the Architect of Record for the new Mosaic
Stadium at Evraz Place, the iconic keystone project
of the city’s Regina Revitalization Initiative and new
home of the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders. With
a standard capacity of 33,000 spectators which is
expandable to 40,000, the flexible design will allow
the stadium to host a variety of events. An exceptional
user experience will be provided with a translucent
spectator roof and open south end zone connecting
the stadium to the community and create a feeling of
spaciousness, a general admission lounge accessible to
all users and 68 per cent of seats located in a sunken
lower bowl. The Stadium’s base will be clad in native
stone to reflect the region’s geology. Substantial
completion is expected in August 2016, with the first
game being played in the stadium in June 2017. The
project team, led by PCL, also includes HKS Sports
& Entertainment Group as Lead Design and Sports
Architect.

Located in Markham, the Canadian Sport Institute
Ontario (CSIO) will be a major 675,000-square
foot multi-sport training and competition facility
which will foster a culture of excellence through the
encouragement of grassroots sports participation;
the development of promising provincial, national and
international athletes; and by hosting competitions.
Designed to LEED guidelines, amenities will include
an Aquatics Centre with two 8-lane, 50 metre pools;
a Fieldhouse with four halls for basketball, volleyball,
gymnastics, combative sports, badminton and table
tennis; a multi-use sports and entertainment complex
with a seating capacity of 6,000 and a NHL-size ice
surface; and a Community Arena complex with two
NHL-size ice surfaces and an international ice surface
with a seating capacity of 250 for each arena.
Outdoor sport venues will include an 8-lane all-weather
track and full field facilities, a 1-kilometre paved bike
track, a field hockey pitch and beach volleyball courts.
A Training Centre with sports medicine and sports
science/fitness testing services, strength training
equipment and athlete therapy. An 8-floor, 100,000
square foot tower will provide offices for various sport
organizations and a residential component with 30 to
50 two-bedroom units for visiting athletes.

Located on the campus of one of Canada’s most
prestigious private schools, this facility includes an
Olympic-standard 300-seat ice rink and NHL-standard
practice rink. It also includes an Alumni Lounge
between and above the two rinks which provides a
glass-enclosed gathering space that includes a bar,
servery, and tiered seating. The lounge acts as a bridge
between the northern extent of the campus and the
south end that leads out to the city. The exterior
finishes were chosen to integrate with the existing
fabric of the campus. The material and colour palettes
selected reflect the unique character of the nearby
heritage neighbourhood. This design/build project has
received LEED Gold certification.

Envisioned as a gateway and hub of activity for this
historic campus, Queen’s Centre will be built in three
phases. Phase 1, which opened in December 2009,
features an aquatic centre including a 38-by-25-metre
pool with 12 lanes and diving facilities, 2,000-seat
varsity gym, additional practice gyms, racquet courts,
extensive fitness facilities, student lounges and club
facilities, and retail/food court amenities. The new
School of Kinesiology and Health Studies (part of Phase
1) opened in January 2010. Phases 2 and 3 will include
a field house and more student life space. This project
is registered and targeting LEED Silver certification.
The B+H team, which included Sasaki Associates
and Shoalts and Zaback, was selected through an
international submission call.

address the integrated wellness needs of the campus
community. It will also provide facilities for high-

while having the capacity to elegantly convert into a
ceremonial space. It will anchor a Healthy Living Village
which will include a retrofitted gym and new buildings
clustered at the hillside location.

Destined to be become a crucial regional hub, The
Markham Edge is an $850 million mixed-use complex
comprising of a Transit Hub, Sport Complex and Hotel/
Convention Centre. It is the culmination of years of
study on the Canadian Sport Institute of Ontario,
and the Markham Hotel and Convention Centre. This
1,200,000-square foot project includes a five-star
hotel with a major convention centre, 20,000-seat
NHL caliber hockey arena, various sports amenities
and transit centre with 205,000 square feet of retail
and 84,000 square feet of transit-related halls, kiosks
and platform space. As a regional hub, it will connect
the lines of at least four transit groups, handling up
to 150,000 passengers by 2016. The project will be
registered and target LEED Silver certification.

The Staples Center arena seats up to 20,000 viewers
for concerts; 18,997 for basketball; and 18,118 for hockey
and arena football. Two-thirds of the arena’s seating,
including 2,500 club seats, are in the lower bowl. There
are also 160 luxury suites, including 15 event suites, on
three levels between the lower and upper bowls.
The arena was designed for the Kings – NHL hockey,
Lakers and Sparks NBA basketball. The design team
was responsible for both Architecture and Interior
Design. From the dressing rooms to the private suites,
to the roof and exterior to the landscaping.

This project includes an expanded fitness area,
enlarged and improved conference facilities, a new
25m outdoor pool that is to be enclosed in the future,
two squash courts, new and expanded locker facilities,
new family changerooms, connections to a new and an
existing winter tennis bubbles, retail and conference
and lounge facility enhancements. The renovations
have enhanced the already thriving club spirit and
clarify and untangle the existing circulation, mechanical,
fire and life safety systems. The work was under an
aggressive construction schedule. This work was
performed by Six Degrees Architecture and Design
whose operations were acquired by B+H in August
2007.

This work was completed on an ad-hoc basis for Maple
Leaf Sports and Entertainment between 2000 and
2006. Individual projects included ACC Club level and
Gondola renovations, new Level 500 boxes, new Media
Centre, Alumnae Box, HR Training Room, Raptors
dressing room and treatment facilities, West Façade
Renovation Studies, new Platinum Members Gate 2A
Entry, new private box for a former Maple Leafs owner,
Platinum Lounge expansion studies, new Loge Level
retail concessions, Molson’s Kiosks, all Public Washroom
upgrades, etc.
Particular projects of note due to the tight site
constraints were a new 3,700-square foot mezzanine

floor structure that was added and had to be
structurally suspended from the existing roof, as well as
an atypical structure adding space for back-of-house
staff facilities and amenities. There was also a proposal
to add roof-suspended structure corner gondolas at
level 500. The Master Planning work involved exploring
opportunities for further nearby development and
enhancements to Air Canada Centre.
The work on this project was performed by Six Degrees
Architecture and Design, whose operations were
acquired by B+H in August 2007.

This Master Plan envisages the Departments of
Athletics, Counselling Services, and Student Health
Services working collaboratively for the enhancement
of student life, health and wellness. The full build-out of
the proposed plan includes a total of 800,000 square
feet, 11 fields, site improvements and parking. Each
aspect of athletics and recreation will be enhanced
for recreational users, athletes, coaches and staff, and
spectators. Key features include a Multi Purpose Hall,
Field House Centre, Synthetic Turf Fields with four
competition-quality soccer fields, and eight-lane 400m
track.
