● Founder of Marshall Field and Company
was officially renamed Macy's on State Street in 2006
In January 1865, Marshall Field and one of his coworkers Levi Leiter, accepted an offer
to become partners at the establishment of Potter Palmer. The new company became known as
"Field, Palmer, Leiter & Co." In 1867, Field and Leiter couldn’t afford to buy out Palmer so he
withdrew from the establishment, and they renamed it as"Field, Leiter & Company." In 1881
Field forced Leiter to sell his share of the business, and changed the store's name to "Marshall
Field and Company".
He had to sleep in the department store he worked at for his first year of work, because
he only made a $400 salary a year. Which made him not be able to afford to live on his own.
Fields was most known for making the department store, Marshall Field and Company,
but we now know it as Macy’s Department store.
