SENLAN SB40 INSTALLATION AND WIRING

2 Installation and Wiring

2.1 Installation
2.1.1 Ambient temperature
-10℃~40℃, with humidity lower than 90%. If temperature>40℃,
the inverter must be derated by 5% for every addition of 1℃. At an
altitude above 1000m, the inverter must be derated by 3% for every
addition of 500m.

2.1.2 Installation location

The location for installing the inverter should meet the following
requirements:
„ Free from corrosive, inflammable and explosive gases and
liquids.
„ Free from dust, floating fibers and metallic particles.
„ The support is firm without vibration.
„ Free from direct sunlight.
„ Free from electromagnetic interference.

2.1.3 Installation space and heat dissipation

The inverter will generate heat during operating. To ensure good
ventilation, the inverter must be installed vertically and sufficient
space be kept around it, as shown below:

-7-
SENLAN SB40 INSTALLATION AND WIRING

120mm
or more Air

Inverter
50mm 50mm
or more or more

120mm
or more

When two or more inverters are installed in one cabinet, horizontal

arrangement is recommended to minimize the mutual thermal
influence. If vertical arrangement is necessary, a separating board
should be provided between them to prevent the heat of the lower
inverter affecting the upper one.
If the cabinet is equipped with exhaust fans at the top, the air flow
of the fans must be greater than the total outflow of individual
inverters. For those without exhaust fans, the top of the cabinet
should be left open if practicable; if not practicable, the area of the
air vent(inlet & outlet) at the top and bottom must be greater than
the total area of the up & down surfaces of individual inverters, and
the wind resistance at the air vent should be as small as possible.
If the inverter is installed on the wall of a control room, the room
not be enclosed and should have good ventilation。

P1, DB Connect an external braking resistor(0.75 ~ 7.5KW)
P+, DB Connect an external braking resistor(11 ~ 15KW)
P+, N Connect a braking unit
PE Inverter ground terminal

„ Main circuit power supply terminals [R, S, T]

① Connect the input power to these terminals via a circuit breaker.
The rated current of the breaker should be 1.5~2 times of that of
the inverter. There is no need to match the phase when
connecting.
② It is recommended that the input power be fed to the inverter via
an AC contactor to prevent further problems or damage to the
inverter in the event of a failure.

„ Inverter output terminals [U, V, W]

① Connect a 3-phase motor to these terminals in correct phase order.
If the run command does not match the rotary direction of the
motor, interchange any two of the U, V, W connections(the
counterclockwise rotation is defined as the forward direction
viewing from the load side).
② Do not connect a capacitor or a surge absorber to the output side

- 11 -
SENLAN SB40 INSTALLATION AND WIRING

of the inverter.
③ When the wiring length between the inverter and the motor are
long, the large inter-wire capacitance may result in abnormal
operation or even overcurrent trip. In this case, connect a filter or
a magnetic ring(s) to the output side of the inverter and
moderately decrease the carrier frequency. Refer to the following
table:

Wiring length <50m <100m ≥100m

Carrier frequency ≤9KHz ≤7KHz ≤3KHz
F79 ≤7 ≤5 ≤2

Caution

To suppress the interference generated on the inverter output side, it

is recommended to connect a dedicated filter to the output side, or
place the output power cables(U, V, W) into a metal conduit and
separated them with the control cables.

„ DC reactor terminals [P1, P+]

① These terminals are used to connect a power factor correcting DC
reactor, which should match the inverter capacity.
② These terminals are connected by a shorting-bar when shipped
from the factory, so remove this bar before connecting the DC
reactor.
③ The shorting-bar should not be removed if the DC reactor is not
used.
- 12 -
SENLAN SB40 INSTALLATION AND WIRING

„ External braking resistor terminals [P1, DB]/[P+, DB]

① These terminals are used to connect an external braking
resistor(option). See chapter 9 for specifications of the braking
resistor.
② When connecting the external braking resistor, use a twist pair
with its length less that 5 meters.
③ Never short P+ and DB. That will destroy the equipment.

„ Braking unit terminals [P+, N]

They are used to connect an external braking unit(option). See
Chapter 9 for specifications of the braking unit.

„ Inverter ground terminal [PE]

① To reduce noise and prevent electric shock and fire, this terminal
must be grounded securely and the grounding resistance should
be less than 10Ω.
② When connecting multiple inverters to the ground simultaneously,
be careful not to make the grounding wires form a closed circuit.

2.2.2 Control circuit terminals

- 13 -
SENLAN SB40 INSTALLATION AND WIRING

Description of control circuit terminals

„ Relay output terminals [30A, 30B, 30C]
These are programmable output terminals, can withstand
220VAC/1A.

„ Multi-function output terminals [Y1, Y2, Y3]

These are open collector output terminals, can withstand 24VDC
/50mA.

„ Multi-function input terminals [X1 ~ X5]

Refer to F69, Chapter 6.

„ Analog signal terminals [VRF, IRF, FMA, PO]

VRF: analog voltage input (DC 0~5V or 10V, input resistance
10KΩ).
IRF: analog current input(DC 4~20mA, input resistance 240Ω).
FMA: analog output(0~20mA, 0~10V). It can be output current, load
rate or frequency.
PO: pulse output.
Switch SW1 selects the FMA output between analog current and
voltage signal; SW2 selects VRF input between 0~5V and 0~10V;
SW3 selects VPF input between 0~5V and 0~10V.

„ External command terminals [JOG, FWD, REV]

JOG: when the inverter is in stop mode, short JOG and CM, then
short FWD(REV) and CM, the inverter will jog
forward(reverse).
FWD: it is valid when F02=1 or 2. Short FWD and CM, inverter will
- 14 -
SENLAN SB40 INSTALLATION AND WIRING

run forward. But if the operation is controlled by the keypad

panel, FWD is just for reverting the inverter direction, that is,
if short FWD and CM, inverter will run reverse, otherwise
forward.
REV: it is valid when F02=1 or 2. Short REV and CM, inverter will
run reverse; short REV, FWD and CM simultaneously, inverter
will stop.

„ External alarm terminal [THR] and reset terminal [RESET]

THR: open THR-CM, an external alarm signal(oLE) will be
generated and the inverter will immediately shut off the
output.
RESET: shorting RESET and CM will reset the inverter.

„ External power supply terminals [5V, GND, CM]

5V: control power supply, 5mA
GND: control power supply ground
CM: common terminal

„ FMA output selector [SW1] and VRF input selector [SW2]

SW1 selects the FMA output signal between analog voltage and
analog current. SW2 selects the VRF input signal between 0~10V and
0~5V analog voltage.

Attention:
Analog signals are easily disturbed by external interference. To
suppress the interference, use shielded cables as the control circuit
wires and firmly connect the shield cables to the common terminal or

- 15 -

required.
The SB40 series inverter uses IGBT as the power device. The carrier
frequency can be set between 2 and 9KHz.
When higher carrier frequency is adopted, the current waveform is
good, the low-frequency torque is large and the noise is low, but
increasing the carrier frequency will increase the power consumption
of IGBT and lower the inverter efficiency and the motor torque. And
if the carrier frequency is too low, the inverter may run unstably at
low frequencies.
If you run the inverter over the default carrier frequency, you should
derate it by 5% for every 1 increment of F79.

will lead to sharp rise of the inverter output current which may exceed
the overcurrent stall level. In this case, the inverter will increase the
acceleration time or stop accelerating. And when the current drops to
a certain value below the stall level, the inverter reaccelerates.

SENLAN SB40 MAINTENANCE & TROUBLESHOOTING

7 Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Danger

• Only professionally trained person can disassemble and repair the

inverter and change the parts.
• After repairing the inverter, do not leave any conductor(such as
metal) in it. That may damage the inverter.

Caution

Before inspecting and repairing the inverter, confirm the following

item, or there may be a risk of electric shock.
• The power to the inverter has been cut off.
• The high-voltage lamp on the main control board has been off.
• The DC voltage(measured with a multimeter) has dropped to the
safety level(36V below)

Danger

• When supplying power to an inverter that has long not been used,
gradually increase the input voltage via a voltage regulator until it
reaches the rated voltage, or there may be a risk of electric shock or
explosion.

- 61 -
SENLAN SB40 MAINTENANCE & TROUBLESHOOTING

7.1 Daily inspection and maintenance

In order that the inverter may work reliably for a long period, you
must install and operate it strictly in accordance with this manual.
And conduct the daily inspection and maintenance as follows:

■ Check that if the operation environment of the inverter meets the

requirements.
■ Check that if the inverter operation parameters are set within the
specified ranges.
■ Check that if the inverter or motor has unusual noise, vibration or
overheating.

7.2 Periodical maintenance

Periodical maintenance should be performed once every 3 or 6
months depending on the service conditions.

Check items:
■ Check to see if the three phase output voltages (U, V, W) are
balanced when the inverter operates without load.
■ Check to see if the screws of the control circuit terminals are loose.
If so, tighten them.
■ Check the input(R, S, T) and output(U, V, W) terminals for
damage.
■ Check that if the connections between terminals(R, S, T, U, V, W)
and copper plates are firm.
■ Check the terminals and copper plates for overheating,
discoloration and deformation.

- 62 -
SENLAN SB40 MAINTENANCE & TROUBLESHOOTING

■ Check to see if the insulation of the main circuit & control circuit
terminals meets the requirements.
■ Check the power cables and control cables for damage, aging and
discoloration.
■ Remove dirt with cloth immersed with a neutral chemical and
remove dust from air vents and printed circuit boards with a
vacuum cleaner.
■ When leaving the inverter unused for a long time, check it for
functioning at least once every year by supplying it with electricity
for at least two hours with the motor disconnected. While
supplying the power, the input voltage should be increased
gradually with a transformer to the rated value.
■ Insulation test: first disconnect all the connections between the
inverter and external circuits & motor, then connect the main
circuit terminals R, S, T, P1, P+, DB, U, V and W with a wire,
finally test the insulation between this wire and PE terminal with a
DC 500V tester. If insulation is greater than 5MΩ, that means it is
normal. Do not conduct insulation test on the control circuit!
That may destroy the inverter.

7.3 Replacement of parts

The lives of parts used in the inverter vary with type, installation
environment and service condition. It is recommended to replace
the parts before they are damaged.

7.4 Anti-interference measures

7.4.1 Preventing external noise
■ Separate the control cable and the power cable(input R、S、T and
output U、V、W)and run them across each other instead of parallel.
Preferably use a shielded twisted pair as the control cable and
connect it firmly to the inverter PE terminal or the common
terminal.
■ If the control cable is long, connect a filter serial to the control
cable, or run the control cable through and wrap 2-3 circles on the
magnetic ring before connecting it to the inverter.

7.4.2 Preventing radio interference

Connect an AC reactor on both input and output side of the inverter,
and put the inverter and the power cable in the grounded metal
cabinet and conduit respectively.
Alternatively you can connect a filter on both input and output side
of the inverter. If filter is not available, an equivalent magnetic ring
can be used as the substitute: run the wires(R, S, T, U, V, W)

- 64 -
SENLAN SB40 MAINTENANCE & TROUBLESHOOTING

through and wrap 3-4 circles on the ring in the same direction.
The connecting wires between the inverter and motor, filter &
reactor should be as short as possible.

7.5 Troubleshooting
When faults occur, diagnose the inverter according to the following
table and make a detailed record. If your problem can’t be resolved
by the aid of the table or you need technical support, contact the
distributor.

8.2 Description of options

8.2.1 AC reactor
The input AC reactor can suppress the higher harmonics of the
inverter input current and obviously improve the power factor. It is
recommended to adopt it in following cases:
① The ratio of the power supply capacity to the inverter capacity is
greater than 10:1.
② A thyristor device or a power factor compensator is connected to
the same power supply.
③ The voltage unbalance of the 3-phase power is great(≥3%).
④ The power factor of the input side is required to improve. It can be
increased to 0.75~0.85.

8.2.2 Radio noise filter

The radio noise filter is used for suppressing the electromagnetic
interference generated by the inverter, the external radio
interference, and the transient shock & surge interference with the
inverter.
The radio noise filter should be adopted in following cases:

■ The requirement of anti-radio interference is highly emphasized.

■ Meeting CE, UL and CSA standards is required.
■ There are devices with poor anti-interference ability around the
inverter.
The filter should be located as close as possible to the inverter, with
the connecting wire(twisted pair) as short as possible.

8.2.3 Braking unit & braking resistor

Braking unit and braking resistor are used to absorb the regenerative
energy during the motor braking. A braking resistor is generally
enough to meet the requirement. If the motor capacity is large, a
braking resistor and a braking unit can be used together to improve
the braking ability.

8.2.4 DC reactor
When the power grid capacity is far more than that of the inverter,
or the power supply capacity is greater than 1000KVA, or higher
power factor is required(>0.9), a DC reactor should be installed
between P+ and P1. Before connecting the DC reactor, remove the
shorting bar across P+ & P1.
The DC reactor may be used in conjunction with the AC reactor to
reduce the input higher harmonics.
Inverters with 30KW or more capacities can use DC reactors.

8.2.5 Remote operation panel

The keypad panel can be removed from SB40 Inverter and used as a
remote operation panel by connecting an extended wire. The
extended wire can be purchased from us.

8.2.6 Current-leak protector

Since the static capacitance to the ground exists in the inverter,
motor and wire leads, and the carrier frequency used by the inverter
is high, therefore, the leakage current of the inverter to the ground is
very high(especially inverters of large capacity), sometimes even
leads to error action of the protection circuit.
To avoid above problem, lower the carrier frequency and shorten
the wire leads, and install a current-leak protector.
When using the current-leak protector, pay attention to the
following points:

- 72 -
SENLAN SB40 PERIPHERAL DEVICES

■ The current-leak protector should be connected to the input side

of the inverter and preferably located behind the air
switch(non-fuse breaker) .
■ The action current of the current-leak protector should be ten
times the total leakage current(circuit, radio noise filter and motor
etc.) of the same circuit when supplied by commercial power with
the inverter disconnected.

8.2.7 Capacitor box

This device is specially used for supplying power when the
momentary power-off time is long(>20mS) so that the inverter can
run continuously.
As using this device will affect some parameters of the inverter, we
do not recommend you configure it by yourself.
