Objectives
At the end of this lesson I want my students to be able to produce a series of rhyming words.
Rhyming is important to reading and spelling because it can help children appreciate that words
that share common sounds often share common letter sequences. So if you can spell cat, you can
also spell bat, rat and mat. This also applies to reading, if you can read “call,” you can read, ball,
tall and mall.
Standards/TEKS
2.2A.i: producing a series of rhyming words.
Anticipatory Set
The kids will be drawn into the lesson by not just talking about words that rhyme, but by
showing them props and seeing how the words sound alike.
Teaching: Modeling
Students are taken to the application level comparison and recognition.
Questioning strategies:
I will question my students throughout the week, stating different words that they need to give
me a rhyme for.
Guided Practice
The students will be practicing flash cards and putting the rhyming words with one another, as I
go around the room to observe and make sure each student is correct with their work.
Independent Practice
Homework assignment: circle the words that rhyme.
Classroom work: flashcards, making sentencing with a rhyme
Closure
There will be at test at the end of the week to make sure each student understands the lesson.
