MC 2: That’s right ……………………. Because in this magical day, we are going to make your
fantasy come true!
MC 1: (Listen and understand) Ok! Be prepared for go back in time and live an awesome adventure!
MC 2: Yes! Get yourselves ready for the ride! Because this morning the fourth graders have
prepared a play….. Drum roll please!
MC 1, MC2: “CANTUÑA”
(Curtains open)
The narrator (an old man) is stepping wrong ways to the audience
MC1: Hello?
Narrator: (Looks back, turn around fast and surprised and says with an angry tone) Hey what are
you kids doing here? And where am I??
Narrator: (Mad) who are you calling OLD? You silly youngsters. Come here!
MC 1: Bye bye!
Narrator: (try to catch them but gets a backache, returns and says) kids… anyways, where was I? Oh
yes, my name is mister Jose de la Torre, and today I will tell you the story of how the San Francisco
church was made. A long time ago in the city of Quito there was a smart and brave Indian called:
CANTUÑA.
Act 1
CANTUÑA………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

2 Priests ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Narrator ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
The plaza is crowded, it’s a normal day in Quito, everybody enter the stage and step in positions. Later
on CANTUÑA walks in dancing with music.
CANTUÑA: (After dancing) what a nice day! (Get close to the 4 Indian women talking and says) good
morning ladies you look beautiful this morning
CANTUÑA: (Get close to the 4 Indian women selling and says) hello Miss Mary how are you?
Miss Mary (Indian woman selling fruits): Hello CANTUÑA, fine thanks. Would you like an apple?
CANTUÑA: (Getting close to the criollas and pick up a lady’s scarf, lady says thanks. After that CANTUÑA
plays with the guards then gets to his friends, greets them and talk to them)
Narrator: As you saw everybody liked CANTUÑA except for the Spanish guards. He was a good person
and also a great builder, that’s why the Franciscan priests ask him to build the biggest convent in Quito…
the San Francisco church.
(While the narrator is talking CANTUÑA go to his house and sit in a desk)
Indian woman (talking): yes father, he was here. Probably he went home.
Priest 2: As you are the best builder of this city, we want to make the biggest church of Quito. Its name
will be San Francisco church and we would like to entrust the construction to you CANTUÑA.
CANTUÑA: Ok! I will be happy to build the church but I will need 6 months.
Guard 1: Wait CANTUÑA, weren’t you the best builder in this city? If so do it in four month!
Guard 1: But remember if you don’t finish in three months, you will go to jail.
CANTUÑA: No problem!
(Open Curtains)
The narrator walks to stage really slow as an old man with a paper, put on his glasses and start
reading:
Narrator: (get ready) As I was saying, the brave CANTUÑA was about to build the greatest, and most
beautiful church in Quito, but he had to finish it in just three months, that was the challenge. All the
people in the city started talking about the construction of the new monastery
The MCs have to care him away because the play must continue.
The 8 Indian woman walk in and eventually sit down in two groups
I. women 1: Hey girls! I have news for you! A new church will be made…
