3. Narrators coming to stage: Both narrators enter the stage through the door, they shall walk
energetically accompanied by music and sound effects. Getting the audience excited.

MC 1: Good morning ladies and gentlemen! My name is ……………………..

MC 2: Welcome! How is everybody doing this morning? My name is ……………………..

MC 1: We are so glad to be your MCs today, right ……………………..?

MC 2: That’s right ……………………. Because in this magical day, we are going to make your
fantasy come true!

MC 1: Oh yeah! Wait how are we going to do that?

MC 2: (Whisper something to narrator 1)

MC 1: (Listen and understand) Ok! Be prepared for go back in time and live an awesome adventure!

MC 2: Yes! Get yourselves ready for the ride! Because this morning the fourth graders have
prepared a play….. Drum roll please!

MC1: A round of applause for….

MC 1, MC2: “CANTUÑA”

(Curtains open)

The narrator (an old man) is stepping wrong ways to the audience

MC1: Hello?

Narrator: (Looks back, turn around fast and surprised and says with an angry tone) Hey what are
you kids doing here? And where am I??

MC 2: We are the MCs and this is “CANTUÑA” the play.

Narrator: CANTUÑA I know his story, I will tell you

MC 1: Hey grandpa, aren’t you too old for this?

Narrator: (Mad) who are you calling OLD? You silly youngsters. Come here!

MC 2: Oh oh, we better run, see you guys later!

MC 1: Bye bye!

Narrator: (try to catch them but gets a backache, returns and says) kids… anyways, where was I? Oh
yes, my name is mister Jose de la Torre, and today I will tell you the story of how the San Francisco
church was made. A long time ago in the city of Quito there was a smart and brave Indian called:
CANTUÑA.
Act 1

Scene 1: Central Plaza

CANTUÑA………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Narrator ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

The plaza is crowded, it’s a normal day in Quito, everybody enter the stage and step in positions. Later
on CANTUÑA walks in dancing with music.

CANTUÑA: (After dancing) what a nice day! (Get close to the 4 Indian women talking and says) good
morning ladies you look beautiful this morning

4 Indian women (talking): Thank you CANTUÑA!

CANTUÑA: (Get close to the 4 Indian women selling and says) hello Miss Mary how are you?

Miss Mary (Indian woman selling fruits): Hello CANTUÑA, fine thanks. Would you like an apple?

CANTUÑA: Sure, how much is it?

Miss Mary: You can have it CANTUÑA, don’t worry

CANTUÑA: Thank you Miss Mary have a good day!

Miss Mary: Bye

CANTUÑA: (Getting close to the criollas and pick up a lady’s scarf, lady says thanks. After that CANTUÑA
plays with the guards then gets to his friends, greets them and talk to them)

Narrator: As you saw everybody liked CANTUÑA except for the Spanish guards. He was a good person
and also a great builder, that’s why the Franciscan priests ask him to build the biggest convent in Quito…
the San Francisco church.

(While the narrator is talking CANTUÑA go to his house and sit in a desk)

The two priests start looking for CANTUÑA

Priest 1: Good morning daughters have you seen CANTUÑA?

Indian woman (talking): yes father, he was here. Probably he went home.

Priest 2: Thank you, God bless you.

The priests get close to the Spanish guards and say

Priest 2: Hello guards, Do you know where CANTUÑA lives?

Guard 1: good morning father, yes we do.

Guard 2: It’s over there in the corner of the park


Guard 3: Come on, follow us. We will take you there.

They walk to CANTUÑA’S house and knock the door.

CANTUÑA: Come in!

Priest 1: CANTUÑA we have been looking for you all they.

CANTUÑA: Hello fathers, so what can I do for you?

Priest 2: As you are the best builder of this city, we want to make the biggest church of Quito. Its name
will be San Francisco church and we would like to entrust the construction to you CANTUÑA.

CANTUÑA: Ok! I will be happy to build the church but I will need 6 months.

Guard 1: Wait CANTUÑA, weren’t you the best builder in this city? If so do it in four month!

CANTUÑA: four months! That’s too short!

Guard 2: What? Are you scared?

CANTUÑA: No! But it’s a big church.

Guard 3: he is scared as a chicken hahah (laughs)

CANTUÑA: Never! I will build the church in three month!

Priest 1: Perfect! We need you to sign these papers

CANTUÑA: Ok (sign the papers)

Guard 1: But remember if you don’t finish in three months, you will go to jail.

CANTUÑA: No problem!

They come out to stage and high five

MC 1: Maria Sol, can you believe what happened!

MC 2: I know! He has to build the biggest church in just three months.

MC 1: Wow! You think he’s going to make it

MC 2: I hope so, because if he doesn’t… he will go to jail

MC 1: Oh no! Can’t wait to see what happen!

MC 1, MC 2: Come on CANTUÑA you can do it!

(Open Curtains)

The narrator walks to stage really slow as an old man with a paper, put on his glasses and start
reading:

Narrator: (get ready) As I was saying, the brave CANTUÑA was about to build the greatest, and most
beautiful church in Quito, but he had to finish it in just three months, that was the challenge. All the
people in the city started talking about the construction of the new monastery

The MCs have to care him away because the play must continue.

The 8 Indian woman walk in and eventually sit down in two groups
I. women 1: Hey girls! I have news for you! A new church will be made…

I. women 2: Oh really! That’s cool!

I. women 3: Yes and I hear that CANTUÑA is going to build it

I. women 4: Nice! I bet he will do a good job!

I. women 1: Of course! He is the best builder.
