A. Setting of Place :
 Shabby ( worn out) and dull apartment of Loisel’s couple in the Rue des Martyrs , in
Paris , France.
Quote :
o “.....she looked at the dirty walls, the worn-out chairs and the ugly
curtains......”
o “They were dropped off at their door in the Rue des Martyrs, ....”
 Madame Foristier’s house.
Quote : “ Madame Forestier went to her mirrored wardrobe......”
 The Ministerial Mansion’s house when the ball is held.
Quote : “Yes. I touched it in the hall at the Ministry."

B. Setting of Time :
 January 1800’s
Quote : “ ...............Monday January 18th."”
 Time span 10 years
Quote : “     At the end of ten years they had paid off everything, ....”
 Morning
Quote : “She left at about four o'clock in the morning.”
 Evening
Quote : “One evening her husband came home with an air of triumph, holding a
large envelope in his hand.”

C. Setting of the atmosphere :


 Miserable
Quote :
o “She suffered endlessly, feeling she was entitled to all the delicacies and
luxuries of life. She suffered because of the poorness of her house as she
looked at the dirty walls, the worn-out chairs and the ugly curtains”
o “He stopped, stunned, distressed to see his wife crying.”
 Happy
Quote :
o “She threw her arms around her friend's neck, embraced her rapturously, then
fled with her treasure.”
o “ ..... in a sort of cloud of happiness, made up of all this respect, all this
admiration, all these awakened desires, of that sense of triumph that is so
sweet to a woman's heart.”
 Angry
Quote : “She stared at him angrily, and said, impatiently.....”

 Panic :
Quote : “She turned towards him, panic-stricken.”

 Disappointed
Quote : “ "How stupid you are!" her husband cried .....”
