Diversity Lesson Plan

Book: The House on Mango Street by- Sandra Cisneros, 1984

Grade Level: 9th Grade

Multicultural theme: Discovering Personal Identity, Cultural Identity

Material: A class set of the book, A white board, papers, and pencils.

Standards: The CCR anchor standards- Analyze how complex the characters are, interact with

others characters, etc.

Objective: The kids will learn that they should be proud of their culture by learning about the

character Esperanza. She becomes embarrassed of her culture, due to the new neighborhood she

has moved in. The neighborhood really doesn’t have a lot of people of her kind. As we read, we

learn about the effects that the society and environment can have on people. This will lead

towards a class discussion about how any of us can relate to the character and what goes on in

our society today.

Procedures:

- First I will show a short video about Cultural Identity, and then I will ask the class the

following questions :

- Are you proud of your culture?

- Is there anyone who isn’t proud?

- Do you sometimes feel like you don’t belong?

-Then I will introduce the book. “For the next month we will be reading this book. This will help

us realize that we must be proud of who we are”.

- We will then read the book as a class on some days, and for the weekends, I will assign

them chapters to read on their own. When we read them as a class, at the end of each chapter we

will have a short discussion on what they learned in the chapter, or what they think was

important in it.

- Once we are done reading the book, the kids will write a one page essay on what they

have learned while reading the book, and then, we will have a class discussion about it.

Evaluation: Once we have discussed, assessed, we will take a short test of 15 questions at the

end, so that way I know that the kids have read the book and participated.
