Compare and Contrast Essay

Learning and teaching has taken place alternatively in this society. People have
discovered new and effective ways of teaching method lately. With the various style of
teaching approaches, learning has seen be more powerful and active. Among all the
teaching approaches, two methods that will be compared and contrasted in this essay
are Task Based Learning (TBL) and Self Directed Learning (SDL).

The teaching and learning style of each method is a bit different. The teacher is one who
assigns the task and project to learners to complete in TBL while Self Directed Learning
is taken place by the students’ willingness to start a task by themselves. In SDL method,
students lead the whole study process by picking what they are necessary to learn.
Despite their style, both of the methods are targeted to young adult and adult learners
as learning must be done independently by learners’ effort.

Considering teacher’s role, each method needs teachers in the role of facilitator who
offer helps, learning tools and encouragement to learners while learning is taken place.
TBL method mostly consists of cooperative works among learners. The assigned projects
are to be done within group while asking for teachers’ help when acquired. On the other
hand, SDL is seen to be done effectively with the support of both teachers and parents.
The role of parents, somewhat is vital to motivate a Self-directed leaner to have a
successful learning outcome.

Despite several differences between TBL and SDL methods, both learning methods have
the same effective level as they are being used in classrooms around the whole.
