AIR PREHEATER

inc.com sells air preheater. The air preheater is a static type with cast iron fin
tube in the upper section and glass tube in the lower section. We recently were
asked our thoughts regarding whether it was worthwhile to consider replacing
an old steam air preheater with one of today's new designs.

If you already have a furnace or boiler with an older steam air preheater
supplier, and are looking for improvement, you may have some air preheater
options.

The possibility of fire in an steam air preheater increases if one air preheater is
shared with multiple furnaces. The bottom line is that both types of air
preheaters have offsetting advantages and disadvantages. There have been little
design changes in recent years, which have increased air preheater
manufacturer efficiency.

In addition to the above parameters other parameters can also be calculated: for
example air preheater effectiveness, air preheater leakage, and flow rate of
emissions such as CO 2 and SO 2.

The hot gas flowing through the uniflow cyclone is cooled in the air preheater
before it is fed into the main boiler. The gasification air is heated in the air
preheater before it is fed to the gasifier. The low-Btu gas from the gasifier is
led directly from the cyclone through the air preheater to two burners that are
located below the coal burners in the boiler.

Other important inventions include the turbine-powered locomotive and the

"air preheater". The American Society for Engineering Management
designated the Ljungström regenerative air preheater an "International
Historical Mechanical Engineering Landmark," calling it one of the greatest
mechanical inventions of all time.

The smokebox contained a rotating-media air preheater warmed by the flue

gases. The funny sector-shaped thing on the front of the smokebox is the drive
to the friction rollers that rotated the air preheater. This renders the original air
preheater unnecessary, so it would be removed and the heat it normally
recovers from the flue gases before the stack would become available. This
heat can be recovered by new economisers installed in place of the original air
preheater.

efore it is fed into the main boiler. Simultaneously, the gasification air will be
heated up in the air pre heater before feeding it into the gasifier.
The boiler is equipped with an economizer and air preheater and a multiclone
mechanical collector and an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) for particulate
control. Cold side ESP is located after the air preheater and operates in a
temperature range of 130-180°C. As a result, the air preheaters have stayed
clean. Recovery of condensate from steam coil air-preheater in new captive
power plant. Replacement of air-preheater from regenerative to recuperative
type.

In particular if they fire sulfur free biomass and do not have to battle cold end
corrosion meaning the stack gas temperature may be lowered to 140 C or even
lower. We have seen boilers with 125 C, due to high excess air and not due to
efficient air preheater designs.

Each exhaust-heated, induction air preheater must be designed and constructed

to:

 Ensure ventilation of the preheater when the induction air preheater is

not being used during engine operation
 Allow inspection of the exhaust manifold parts that it surrounds
 Allow inspection of critical parts of the preheater itself.

Adding a steam air preheater to the process fired heater usually requires adding
internally lined ducting, fans, a separate coil in its own enclosure (rarely can
you add an air preheater directly to the existing convection section because of
structural restraints), new burners with a plenum, and improved
instrumentation. Adding air preheat requires duct sizing, burner specification,
and fan rating together with actual specification of the air preheater
manufacturer.

Combustion air preheaters can be used to boost efficiency to 90%+, even in

high-temperature fluid applications. We offer air pre heaters in a variety of
types, optimized to the particular fuel being burned.

Feedwater is delivered to the air preheater at full boiler pressure and then
passes directly into the main boiler through clack valves.
To further increase efficiency, the exhaust steam heats a jacket around the
outside of the air preheater.

At today’s cost of energy, the pay off period for Air Preheater could be less
than one year besides the added advantage of controlling pollution. The design
ensures no cold end corrosion of Air Preheater or down stream equipment. Cast
Tube Air Preheater is an assembly of rectangular cast tubes with integral fins
on both internal and external surfaces. The tubes are assembled inside a
structural frame. The Glass Air Preheater is made of borosilicate glass tubes
inserted into tube sheets of carbon steel lined with Teflon.

A modular static cast iron air-preheater for boiler, incinerator and heating
process. If the boiler is equipped with an air preheater, you should take both
temperature, oxygen and CO2 readings both ahead and after the air preheater.
In the majority of cases, on-line oxygen monitors are installed ahead of the air
preheater and therefore may be reading oxygen that are significantly different
than the oxygen measured at the stack.

Air Preheaters
Power boiler applications require highly efficient and reliable air preheaters to ensure optimum
boiler performance. Howden has more than 80 years experience of supplying high quality air
preheaters for customers worldwide.

In 1923 the Howden company and Fredrick Ljungstrom co-operated to develop the rotary
regenerative air preheater for boiler applications.

The core of the preheater, the heat exchange surface, is composed of multiple metal plates
known as elements. As the preheater slowly rotates, at around 1-2rpm, the elements collect heat
in the hot gas stream and then transfer it to the cold air stream. Because both surfaces of the
element plate are used for heat transfer simultaneously this type of heat exchanger is the most
efficient and compact.  It is particularly suited to handling large quantities of hot gas and cold air.

The heat transfer elements comprise thin steel plates formed by rolling. We supply a wide range
of profiles to best match various fuels and applications; combining minimum pressure drop, high
efficiency, compact depth and ease of cleaning.

It is important to keep air to gas leakage as low as possible as leakage leads to increased fan
power. We provide a range of sealing systems, including the advanced Howden “VN” sealing
system. This fixed sealing system includes full depth rotor double sealing that keeps leakage
constantly low for extended periods between outages. In addition to fixed sector plates, we supply
a range of actuated control systems should the application require them.

The main drive is located at the upper end of the shaft rather than on the periphery of the rotor.
This removes the drive components from the corrosive and erosive gas stream and also allows
the axial seals run the full length of the rotor.

We supply a range of on-line cleaning options that use combinations of air, water or steam, in
semi or fully retractable configurations.
