I am thankful that you came to our school and created a lesson for us on holiday
savings. It was very inspiring and motivating to be aware of the importance of
saving and how we can move forward successfully as young adults. We can take
from what we learned from Katie Able Foundation to build a strong foundation
and that’s “HOT!”

by words of her organization, and a
principle that she and the Katie Able
Foundation stand behind today!

This holiday season the Katie Able Foundation
took notice of some star teachers in the Prince
George’s County school system. “We wanted to
recognize those who receive little or no
recognition throughout the year for all of their
hard work,” Said founder Carmen Johnson
“Hopefully the IPAD’s will make the job of
teaching a little easier.”

At the 2 ABC-123 Conference at Robert Frost
Elementary School last week, the organization
presented IPADS to one of the teachers, Mr.
William Hughes, the guidance counselor, Ms.
Ade Davids and the principal,
Dr. Renita Alexander. “The look on their faces
was priceless! I know that our gift to them is well Mr. William Hughes, Teacher at Robert Frost proudly
showing off his new IPAD
appreciated and deserved.” Said Ms. Johnson
“We’ll continue to do what we can to make
Robert Frost a great place to learn!”
ABC-123 Financial Mentoring Program!
So what is the Abc-123 Financial
mentoring program?
The Abc-123 Financial Mentoring Program is
designed for kids just like you! The Katie Able
Foundation works with students from grades K-12 to
teach them good financial habits for today, and for
the future. That means that we help you become
more financially-savvy in today’s society, and you
will be far ahead of many kids older than you, and
even some adults! We make finances fun by
interacting with you at your own school.

Phew! Over the past few months, Katie Able
Foundation has been busy teaching you about
finances. At Robert Frost Elementary School in New
Carrolton, Maryland, the KAF team visited students
in the community, teaching them everything from
where money came from, to big financial events in
history, to what’s happening today, and most
importantly, how you can help out yourself so you
can help others around you.
What Happened Then, and What’s
Happening Now…
The world of finances can seem complicated, but it’s
easier to understand by first looking at those BIG
events in history that are still having affects
today…you may have learned about this in your
social studies or history class!
Today, the word everyone talks about is recession.
You may have heard your parents talking about
this word, or have heard it on the news. Recession
has become a scary word, but when you look back
at history it’s nothing compared to what Americans
experienced in the past!
The Stock Market Crash of 1929 is a scarier phrase
than the recession, because this event caused the
worst financial meltdown in our country’s history,
the Great Depression. The Great Depression was
far more depressing than today’s recession,
because it was one of the darkest times in our
country’s history: businesses slowed down, people
didn’t make as much money, and they barely had
the money to pay for their needs (that means no
big presents during the Holidays!). Although
today’s recession does seem scary, there are ways
kids can help make a difference!

The Piggy Bank is your best friend before, during,
and after tough times! The Piggy Bank will help
you save your money. Saving your money is the
best way you can protect yourself financially
Helping Out Yourself, and Helping Out
Others
So now we’ve learned that savings is the best way
to help yourself before times get tough…but what
can you do to help out your neighbor? The best
way you can help out others is telling them to
SAVE, SAVE, SAVE! There are other ways you can
help as well; especially your parents. Try helping
your parents around the house. Also, remember
that a neighbor means more than just someone
who lives next door; your neighbor means anyone
in the community who could use YOUR help.
