Question 1. (25 Points) 
A scraper is operating on an earthen road and has penetration of 2.5 in. This scraper has an EVW of 
90,000 lb and its GVW is 170,000 lb. The grade from cut to fill is 3%. 
 
Calculate the total resistance in both pounds and equivalent grade and also use  
 
Using the performance chart given on slide 40 determine the speeds 
 
Question 2. (25 Points) 
 

PART A) A truck with a 25 tn GVW is moving up a 3% grade. What is the force required to overcome 
grade resistance?  
 
PART B) Our truck has dumped its load, the GVW is now 12 tn and on the return it is moving down the 
4% grade. What is the force required to overcome grade resistance? 
 

Question 3. EXAMPLE ON DOZER (50 Points) 

How long will it take a crawler 824S dozer w/straight blade to move 7,700 bcy by 200 ft when: 

 Grade of the earth is ‐5% 
 Material is Wet Clay 
 Operator has  excellent skills 
 Site has 40 min/hr efficiency 
 The work will be done during off peak hours from 10 PM to 5 AM reducing the visibility.
