 Definition
■ News item is a text that informs the readers about newsworthy
or important events of the day.
■ A news item text is a text which is grouped into the text genre
of narration. The main function of narration is telling stories or
informing about events in chronological order. The order in the
narration can be based of time, place and the events
themselves
■ Newspapers are a useful tool in for improving reading skills and
enhancing our knowledge of current affairs.
Purposes
■ To inform readers about events of the day which are considered
newsworthy or important.
■ To present information the readers about newsworthy or important
events of the day
Generic Structure
The main Generic Structure of News Item Text:
■ Main Events / Newsworthy event(s): it recounts the event in
summary form.
■ Elaboration / Background event(s): they elaborate what
happened, to whom, in what circumstance
■ Resource of Information (Source) : it contains comments by
participants in, witnesses to and authorities expert on the
event
The Language Features of News Item Text
■ Focusing on circumstances (using a simple language in writing the
text)
■ Using saying verbs: “….”, She said, informed, told, reported.
■ Sometimes at the beginning of news, the scene is mentioned :
Jakarta – … .. / Kuala Lumpur – …
■ Using Past tense in explaining news events. But if it is a fact that
until now still happen or still in the form of fact, then can use
simple present tense.
■ Short, telegraphic information about story captured in headline
■ Using adverbs: time, place and manner.
■ Uses of material processes to retell the event
 Seven Killed in Accident on Jalan
Sultan
■ Newsworthy Event
Seven people were killed in a collision between a bus, a car and a truck at 10:35 p.m. on Jalan
Sultan last night.
■ Backgroud Event
The dead were all passengers in the car. Police believe the car may have been trying to overtake
the bus when it was struck by a truck coming from the opposite direction. The driver of the car
may not have been using his lights, as the truck driver said he did not see the car approaching.
■ Sources
The police said the car should not have been trying to pass the bus, since overtaking is not
allowed on Jalan Sultan. In addition, the police reported that the car–a small Japanese car–
should not have been carrying more than five people. The names of the victims are not yet
known.
Gojek provides training to start-ups in search for Indonesia’s next unicorn

Indonesia’s on-demand services app Gojek has teamed up with start-up accelerator Digitaraya to provide
training to start-ups as they look for the next unicorns in the country en route to be Southeast Asia's
digital powerhouse.
The program, named Gojek Xcelerate, will provide six-month training programs to 20 selected start-ups.
Workshops will involve Google’s start-up acceleration program Google Developers Launchpad, American
consulting firm McKinsey & Co and Swiss banking giant UBS.
Gojek president and cofounder Andre Soelistyo said Tuesday that the company did not only aim to
innovate in solving day-to-day problems in society through society, but also at supporting local start-ups
so they could benefit society and contribute in Indonesia and grow Southeast Asia’s digital economy.
The program consists of five different curriculums shared by companies involved in the
program. Gojek will be in charge of delivering materials related with growth hacking, a strategy in
business development to book massive growth in a short period of time on a small budget.
Google will deliver a machine learning curriculum to help start-ups automate business process and
enhance efficiency, while McKinsey & Co. will be in charge of business models and problem-solving and
UBS of valuation methods and strategy to lure investors.
Speaking together with the Gojek president, Digitaraya managing director Nicole Yap said the selected
start-ups would have the opportunity to market their products or services on Gojek’s online platforms.
