Game Field (G)


G1 Q: What kind of wood is the Ramp made of?
A: ABU Robocon 2011 Bangkok will use plywood with a thickness of
20 mm.

G2 Q: What is the material of the Ramp's surface?


A: Painted wood, Please see Appendix 1 (Page 27)

G3 Q: Is the surface of the Ramp covered with Vinyl Sheet?


A: No

G4 Q: Is the surface of the Ramp painted?


A: Yes

G5 Q: If the material of the Ramp's surface is wood, do you take any


measures to prevent the Robots from slipping on the Ramp?
A: The team has to design the robot so as not to slip from the ramp.

G6 Q: Figure 1 shows that there is Wooden Fence in the Common Zone


near the Sala between the Red team's area and the Blue team's
area. But this fence does not exist on the other Figures. What is
this?

The Robots (R)


R1 Q: Can I use sensor in Automatic Robot to sense the Manual Robot or
is it considered as communication between them?
A: Manual Robot and operator cannot send any signals to
any Automatic Robots but Automatic Robots are allowed to sense
(detect) the position of the Manual Robot.

R2 Q: Can I use arm in Manual Robot so that a sensor in Automatic


Robot can sense it without touching?
A: Manual Robot and operator cannot send any signals to any robots but
Automatic robots are allowed to sense (detect) the position of the
Manual Robot. Signals also include specific action of the Manual Robot
such as raising its arm for the Automatic Robot to sense the position of
the Manual Robot or any other action that convey any messages to the
Automatic Robot(s).

R3 Q: What action is considered as the communication between the


Manual Robot and the Automatic Robot?
1) If the Manual Robot extends its arm beside an Automatic Robot and
the Automatic Robot senses the movement of the Manual Robot, is
this series of action considered as the communication?
A: Yes, it is considered as communication.

R4 Q: When the Manual Robot switches to become Automatic Robot, is


there any limitation on the dimensions of this Robot?
A: There is no limitation on the dimensions of the robot but it has to start
within Rule 5.11 and 8.5.2. The team member must inform the Referee
prior the match if the Manual Robot can switch to become Automatic
Robot.

R5 Q: What kind of computer can Robots be equipped with for information


processing?
1) Can Robots be equipped with a microcomputer, especially Armadillo,
for information processing?
A: Yes
2) Can Robots be equipped with a notebook computer for information
processing?
A: Yes
3) Can Robots be equipped with a motherboard for information
processing?
A: Yes

R6 Q: If an Automatic Robot unites with the other Automatic Robot during


the match, is the united Robot considered as one Automatic Robot?
A: No, we count at the starting point. It will be considered as two robots.

Contest Tools (T)


T1 Q: The objects ' hole should have slope (taper) for easy to put them in
to pole or candle and avoid from breaking objects.
A: No

T2 Q: What is the height of Flower?


A: Please see drawing Figure 10, 11, 12, 16 and rules 3.5.3

T3 Q: About the Candle Base. Does the word "Base" which is mentioned
in Rule 3.5.1.1 mean the Lower Surface in Figure 14?
A: Yes

T4 Q: Does the "height of 503 mm" which is mentioned in Rule 3.5.1.4


include the thickness of the Upper Surface?
A: Yes, it does include the thickness of the Upper Surface.

T5 Q: Are the screws which are mentioned in Rule 3.5.1.4 embedded in


the Base so that they do not jut out?
A: Yes, the screws are countersunk.

T6 Q: The table of Colors and Materials of the Floor Surface and Contest
Tools says that some contest tools are made of "foam".
But what is it? Is it foamed polystyrene?
A: Yes, the foam is polystyrene.

T7 Q: What is the weight of a Joss Stick Pot?


A: 250 g, Please see Rule 3.7

the Joss Stick Pot made of?

Contest Activities (A)


A1 Q: Can we lift 3 Joss Sticks from three different pots?
A: Yes, you can. As long as the 3 Joss Sticks belong to your team.

A2 Q: Can a manual robot pick up three Joss Stick Pots together?


A, Yes, you can.

A3 Q: While placing Joss Sticks, if we placed 2 Joss Sticks successfully but


failed in the 3rd one, do we have to place the three all over again? Or
can we bring single Joss Stick from Joss Stick Pots and can place
them?
A: You don’t have to place three Joss Sticks all over again. You can
bring one Joss Stick from any Joss Stick Pots to fill in.

A4 Q: Can we use hand controlled clutch wires?


A: No, you can’t use clutch wires. In case of the clutch wires mean drive
by wire.

A5 Q: Can we lift 3 Joss Sticks from 3 different Joss Stick Pots?


A: Yes, you can.

A6 Q: Can we earn the scores, even if the completed Krathong touches the
River Bank before dropping to the River Surface?
A: Yes, you can. However, If you touch the River Surface, this will cause
a Violation.

A7 Q: Are we allowed to do the task stated in Rule 5.3 before completing


the task stated in Rule 5.2? If we are not allowed, how can't the
Automatic Robots even collect Krathong Petals and Flowers?
A: Yes, it is allowed.

A8 Q: If we do NOT place the two Krathong Petals and two Flowers to


finish the task stated in Rule 5.3, can we get points!
A: The points will be calculated from the number of Krathong Petals and
Flowers placed on the Preparation Points. You don’t have to place the
two Krathong Petals to finish the task.

A9 Q: How do you set the Joss Stick Pots, Krathong Petals and Flowers at
the start of the match? Please explain the direction of the following
in detail.
1) the direction of the three Joss Sticks placed in the Joss Stick Pot
2) the direction of the four petals of the Krathong Petal
3) the direction of the three holes for placing Joss Sticks

A10 Q: Can we choose how to arrange the Krathong Petals and the Flowers
in the Storage Points or will they be arranged by the referees?
A: At the start of the game the Krathong Petals and Flowers will be
arranged correspond to the Figure 1 by referees then after the game
start you can request a Retry to adjust to your own position.

A11 Q: Is it permitted to load batteries of the Manual Robot into the


controller?
A: No, the batteries must be loaded into the robot according to human
safety.

A12 Q: Can the operator of the Manual Robot shoulder batteries of the
Manual Robot?
A: No, the batteries must be loaded into the robot according to human
safety.

A13 Q: Can one team make more than one Krathong in the same match and
drop them in the river, and will the team take points for this or not?
A: Yes, you can. Please see Rule 7.3.4

A14 Q: What about making more than one uncompleted Krathong, is there
any points for that or not?
A: Yes, the points will be given
(according to the rules 7 Deciding the Winner)

A15 Q: Do we get points if we have one of the other team’s Joss Stick Pots
in our Storage Points? Can we put it on any Poles?
A: If you bring 3 Joss Stick Pots in your Storage Points and place in
Common Zone successfully, your point will be gained. See rules 7.2.1

A16 Q: After placing the 3 Joss Stick Pots in their respective places, can the
Automatic Robots go and get Krathong Petals and Flowers from the
Storage Points ?
A: Yes, they can. The Automatic Robot can start immediately after the
Manual Robot finish placing 3 Joss Stick Pots and the Referees give
the signal. See Rule 5.1

A17 Q: Can the Manual Robot lift up completed Krathong?


A: No, it can’t. If so, it is considered as a Violation Rule 9.11

A18 Q: For the rule (6-11) If the referee removed the dropping Krathong out
of the game area so at that moment the total points will be as it is or
will be ZERO?
A: The score remains as before.

A19 Q: According to rule (6-4) this point means that the Manual Robot can
be retried during the match and the place of retrying is at the Manual
Start Zone or this means that it cannot be retried during the match
except before it starts its work and still at the Manual Start Zone.
A: The Manual Robot can retry any time of the game.

A20 Q: Can I bring small tools with me to fix the robots during the game or
retry?
A: Yes, you can.

A21 Q: When can the Automatic Robot start its mission? After the Manual
Robot finishes placing the Candle Base? Or after it picks up the three
Joss Stick Pots?
A: The Automatic Robot can start immediately after the Manual Robot
finish placing 3 Joss Stick Pots and the Referees give the signal.

A22 Q: Will the red pot in blue zone or the blue in red one will be placed in
corner or center of the three pots, will it be always same or will we be
allowed to set them?
A: The position of all Joss Stick Pots will be arranged as shown in
Figure 1 and FAQ A9.

A23 Q: Is it OK if the Automatic Robots are doing their tasks while the
Manual Robot picks up the Candle Base?
A: Yes, but be careful. Should the Manual Robot touch the Automatic
Robot either directly or indirectly, it will cause violation.

A24 Q: About Rule 5.1. How does the Manual Robot have to place Joss Stick
Pots at Poles in order to get points and perform other tasks? For
example,
1) Do we have to keep Joss Stick Pots horizontal?
A: Yes,
2) Are we permitted to place Joss Stick Pots in pile at one Pole?
A: No
3) Do we have to detach the Manual Robot from Joss Stick Pots?
A: Yes
4) Do we have to make the bottoms of Joss Stick Pots touch Upper
Surfaces of Lower Sections of Poles?
A: Yes

A25 Q: After the Manual Robot finishes placing Joss Stick Pots at Poles,
when are we allowed to start the Automatic robots? Does the
referee give us any sign?
A: The referee will be raising the signal flag.

A26 Q: Do we have to keep the Candle Base horizontal all the time till it is
placed in the Decoration Point?
A: In order to score, the Candle Base must be placed horizontal in the
Decoration Point.

A27 Q: Are Automatic Robots allowed to collect Krathong Petals and


Flowers before the Manual Robot finishes placing Candle Base?
A: Yes, after finishing task on Rule 5.1

A28 Q: About Rule 5.3 While one Automatic Robot is collecting Krathong
Petals and Flowers from Storage Points and carrying them to
Preparation Points, can the other Automatic Robot move up the
Sala?
A: Yes, after finishing the task mentioned under Rule 5.1

A29 Q: When the Automatic Robot drops the completed Krathong on the
River Surface, is it allowed to accelerate the completed Krathong
downward and drop it?
A: Yes, as long as it does not cause any damage game field according
to Rule 10.1

A30 Q: Is it allowed for the Automatic Robot to collect a Candle Light Flame
before the other Automatic Robot finishes the task stated in Rule
5.6?
A: Yes, after finishing task under Rule 5.1

A31 Q: If it is allowed, is it allowed for one Automatic Robot to drop the


Candle Light Flame on top of the Candle right after the other
Automatic Robot dropped the completed Krathong on
River Surface?
A: Yes

A32 Q: Rule 5.10 allows the Automatic Robots to do any tasks of the Manual
Robot. But Rule 5.1 forbid the Automatic Robots to do other tasks
before the Manual Robot completing its task. I think these two states
contradict each other. Please explain.
A: The Automatic Robots can perform any task except for the tasks
mentioned under Rule 5.1 of the Manual Robot.

A33 Q: Rule 6.9 allows us to bring the Joss Stick Pots back to the Storage
Points of the Joss Stick Pots if the Manual Robot drops Joss Stick
Pots. Then, is it permitted to bring the Joss Stick Pots back from the
opponent team's area if the Manual Robot drops Joss Stick Pots in
the opponent team's area?
A: Yes, this is a violation and team members must ask for a Retry.
The referee will bring the Joss Stick Pots which were dropped in the
opponent team’s area back to the Storage Points.

A34 Q: If we place only one Joss Stick Pot at the same Pole twice, can we
get twice as many points?
A: No

A35 Q: When "Loy Krathong" is achieved, are 300 points given additionally
to the points given until then?
A: No, the total point is 300 points for the team who achieve
“Loy Krathong” Please see Rule 7.3.3

A36 Q: At the end of the 3 minutes match, in case both sides of teams
cannot achieve Loy Krathong and earn the same score, which team
is the winner?
A: This regulation will be announced soon.

A37 Q: Should the Manual Robot pick up three Joss Stick Pots and place them
at any Poles in the Common Zone at a time?
A: It is ok to pick up the Joss Stick Pot(s) and place them on the Pole(s) in
the Common Zone one by one or three of them at a time.

A38 Q: Can we place 3 Joss Sticks into the Flower before finishing the
completed Krathong?
A: The Krathong will not be ‘completed’ until three Joss Sticks are placed
into the decorated Krathong.

A39 Q: Can the Manual Robot carry three Joss Sticks at only one phase
(only go and back)?
A: Yes

A40 Q: Can we put the Flowers and Krathong Petals together on Candle
Base?
A: No, you must stack Krathong Petal first and then Flower sequentially
as per Rule 5.4. This means that the base of Krathong Petal must be
absolutely settled down on the Candle Base before stacking the
Flower.

A41 Q: Is it necessary to decorate the Krathong by climbing on the Sala or it


can be done by staying below?
A: Yes, it is necessary to decorate the Krathong on the Sala.

A42 Q: Does Manual Robot bring Candle Base while Automatic Robot
collect Krathong Petals and Flowers?
A: Yes

A43 Q: Is it necessary for Automatic Robot to move up Sala to drop the


completed Krathong on River Surface and drop the Candle Light
Fame?
A: Yes, the Automatic Robot must move up to Sala to do that task.

A44 Q: When in the phase of Automatic Robot collecting Krathong Petals and
Flowers, must the Automatic Robot place two sets of it to the
Preparation Points before the Automatic Robot can proceed to
stacking up the Krathong Petals and Flowers at the Decoration
Point?
A: Not necessary.

A45 Q: Is the Manual Robot allowed to climb up to the Sala area?


A: No

A46 Q: Can the two Automatic Robots touch each other?


A: Yes

A47 Q: When the Manual Robot finishes placing three Joss Stick Pots at
Poles, aren't we regarded to complete the task stated in Rule 5.1
after that we drop some Joss Sticks from Joss Stick Pots?
A: Yes, you are regarded to complete the task. But it will cause violation
in case of you drop the opponent Joss Sticks (according to Rules
5.5 and 9.11).

Restrictions (E)
E1 Q: Rule 9 states "If a violation occurs, 20 points will be immediately
deducted and if the violation still continues, 20 points will be deducted
for every 3 seconds" Could you clarify on what the 3 seconds
represents?
A: Example, if violation occurs continuously for 5 seconds, then 40
points will be deducted and counted as 2 violations. See Rule 10.5
said the team has made three violations in the same match the
team will be disqualified.

E2 Q: "if the violation” still continues, does this refer to (1) the violation
occurs longer than 3 sec, or is it referring to (2) a separate second
violation?
A: (1) The violation occurs longer than 3 sec

E3 Q: If we do the same violation two times, how much is the deduction?


A: 40 points will be deducted.

E4 Q: Is it allowed that the Automatic Robot which holds the completed


Krathong touches the other Automatic Robot which holds the Candle
Light Flame?
A: Yes,

E5 Q: Can the completed Krathong and Candle Light Flame be dropped at


the same time?
A: No, the candle light flame must be dropped after the completed
Krathong already floating in the River Surface. This means that the
base of completed Krathong must be absolutely settled down on the
River Surface before the Robot drops the Candle Light Flame.
(according to Rule 5.6 and 5.7)

E6 Q: Is it allowed to drop the objects except for the completed Krathong


on the River Surface?
A: If the objects are game tools and dropped by the Automatic Robot, it
is allowed to do so. But the Manual robot is prohibited to drop any
objects on the River Surface.

E7 Q: If the completed Krathong (or part of the completed Krathong) which


is on the River Surface slides and enters opposing team's field, is it
regarded as a violation? If it is, will the score be invalid? Will we be
able to bring the Krathong back?
A: Yes, it is regarded as a violation (9.2), the score remains but the
completed Krathong will be removed out of the game field.

E8 Q: What is boundary of each team’s field?


A: The boundary of each team’s field will be divided by
1) the center line of the game field if it’s on ground and Sala
2) the center line of the River Surface if it’s on the River Surface.

E9 Q: Is it permitted to put some objects under the River Surface in order


to restrict the movement of the River Surface?
A: No, it’s not allowed to put any objects under the River Surface. It is
considered as a violation.

E10 Q: Is the Manual Robot allowed to touch the River Surface indirectly?
A: No, it is not.

E11 Q: According to Rule 6.7


1) Can we bring back Krathong which was dispersed because of
the impact of dropping on the way to the River Surface?
A: Yes, you can.
2) Does the referee bring Krathong back to the Decoration Point?
A: Yes, the referee does. In addition, Team members can bring Krathong
back to the Decoration Point.
3) Can we request the referee to adjust the direction of the Krathong at
the Decoration Point?
A: Yes, you can. In addition, team members can assembly and adjust the
Krathong at the Decoration Point.

E12 Q: During a retry, are we allowed to touch the Robots' switches in order
to change the mode of the Robots? If we are allowed, where can we
do that? In Start Zones, out of the game field or in other place?
A: Yes, at Start Zones.

E13 Q: Is it allowed for Robots to move River Surface without touching it?
For example, is it allowed to blow River Surface?
A: No, it’s not.

E14 Q: Can the team reuse the Candle Light Flame dropped on the field or
the River Surface?
A: No, they can’t.

E15 Q: Can the team reuse the Candle Light Flame dropped on the body of
the automatic robot?
A: Yes, they can.

E16 Q: About Rule 5.3. When the Automatic Robot places only one Krathong
Petal and only one Flower at the Preparation Points, can the
Automatic Robot start to stack the Krathong Petal and then the
Flower on the Candle Base at the Decoration Point?
A: Yes, stacking the Krathong Petal and Flower can only be done only
on Sala by Automatic Robots.

E17 Q: Rule 6.10 states that the Automatic Robots are not allowed to place
Krathong Petals or Flowers to the Preparation Points while they are
on the Sala. When the Automatic Robots do not touch Sala, but
invade above Sala, are the Automatic Robots considered to be on
the Sala?
A: No

E18 Q: Can we remove dropped Krathong and other contest tools from
Game Field?
A: Yes, you are allowed to do it during a Retry. However, in the case when
the Krathong and other contest tools fall in the opponent’s game
field, team members cannot go and remove those items by
themselves.

E19 Q: Can two Automatic Robots be on Sala at the same time?


A: Yes, you can.

E20 Q: Is the operator allowed to be on the Sala ?


A: No

E21 Q: We have some questions about Rule 9.6


1) Is it regarded as obstruction to remove the opponent team's Joss
Stick Pots from Poles in Common Zone?
A: Yes, it is an obstruction.
2) Is it regarded as obstruction for us to compete for one Pole with the
opponent team? And if it is regarded as obstruction, which team is
considered to commit a violation?
A: The Referee will make a decision based on the first team who
reached the pole first. That team has the right to place the
Joss Stick Pot.
3) Is it regarded as obstruction for us to remove opponent team's Joss
Sticks from Joss Stick Pots after we finish the task stated in
Rule 5.1?
A: It is not regarded as obstruction but it is a violation (rules 5.5) and
disqualification (rules 10.2) (If a violation occurs, 20 points will
be immediately deducted and if the violation still continues, 20 points
will be deducted for every 3 seconds. Each time of deduction is
considered as the number of violations. The team with three violations
in a match will be disqualified).

E22 Q: Are we allowed to bring Krathong Petals or Flowers which have


already been placed at Preparation Points back to Storage Points
when we make a retry?
A: Yes, but the scores will be deducted.

E23 Q: About Rule 6.11. When we fail in dropping the completed Krathong
and it is dispersed,
1) Can we reuse the Krathong if there is no violation?
A: Yes
2) If the Robots touch the River Surface indirectly by some parts of the
Krathong such as Joss Sticks, Can we reuse the Krathong?
A: No
