(b) Suppose that there are three message signals to be sent. The first two message
signals both have frequency contents within 5kHz, while the third message signal has
frequency contents within 10kHz. The pulse width T is half of the duration between two
consecutive pulses T p . What would you do to make the TDM system most efficient in
terms of bandwidth usage?

Solution (a) - TDM Let T p denote the duration between two consecutive pulses. To avoid
overlaps between pulses, we must have T p > T . As every message signal has frequency
contents within 5kHz, the message bandwidth (for every signal) is W = 5 kHz. It also
follows that T s = 1 / (2 × 5 kHz ) = 100 μs is the appropriate choice for the sampling
1/6
period. Since T p = T s /n where n denotes the number of multiplexed message signals,
we have n = T s T p < T s T = 100 . That means that the maximum number of message
signals is 99.

Solution (b) - TDM We sample the first two message signals with a sampling period of T s,
1 = 1 / (2 × 5 kHz ) = 100 μs , and the third message signal with a (different) sampling
period of T s, 2 = 1 / (2 × 10 kHz ) = 50 μs . Then, we do TDM by the following way: t s(t)
Then the pulse duration is T = 12 . 5 μs , and the transmission bandwidth is B T = 1 T =
80 kHz.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero,
where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors
24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable
in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to
help me move forward and get everything together on time.
