DECLINATION OF NAMES AND SURNAMES

– The grammar norm states:

1) men – both name and surname change
2) women – only name changes
– For surnames that end in -a, they change for both men and women.
– Also, one should always write name first and surname second. The only exception
is when making an alphabetical list of people's names. When names are written in
this reverse order, only the name is changed.

Examples:

1. Sećam se Milana Jovanovića, studirali smo zajedno pre 20 godina. I

remember Milan Jovanovich, we studied together twenty years ago.
2. Sećam se Milene Jovanović, išle smo u istu školu. I remember Milena
Jovanovich, we went to the same school.
3. On je glumio u novom filmu Emira Kusturice. He performed in the new
movie of Emir Kusturica.
4. Bora Todorović je brat Mire Stupice. Bora Todorovich is the brother of
Mira Stupica.
5. Pomogao sam Lani Pavlici, našoj komšinici sa drugog sprata. I helped Lana
Pavlica, our neighbor from the 2nd floor.
6. Pričali smo o Stefanu Markoviću i Jeleni Todorović. We talked about
Stefan Markovich and Jelena Todorovich.
7. Bio sam na sastanku sa Markom Đorđevićem i Sofijom Lučić. I was in a
meeting with Marko Djordjevich and Sofia Luchich.
