THE ROUBINE DU ROI-WASHERWOMEN

BY VINCENT VAN GOGH

Van Gogh’s expressive works are well-known for its lively strokes and line fragments added

to its emotional intensity. In van Gogh’s drawing, many line fragments were included like the

short straight lines of the flowing river, the crosshatched lines suggesting a dark area and the

curve scribbly lines suggesting the

washerwomen. Some intensified lines

that separate the river from the land and

many more. The speed of the river is

suggested by the grouping together of the

small lines in the river. They show the

current by their variety in tone, grouping

and direction. The two long, sweeping

lines that indicate the length of the river

lead the eye from the front of the picture to the back. They also give the picture its structure,

composition and harmony.

These lines express movement, dynamic action and rhythm. They are varied by color,

heaviness, direction, shape and length that adds story and excitement to the artwork.

Furthermore, the line fragments create a sense of motion. The strokes lead the eye to different
directions which makes it lively due to its variety and placement. And due to the fragment’s

placement and variety, it maintains shape and harmony.
