special occasions and events, tailored to suit your needs.
This issue is a little special. The contribution of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Prabhupāda is immeasurable. On the occasion of his Vyāsa-Pūjā celebrations (his 123rd birth
anniversary) on the 25h of August, devotees have submitted eloquent, heart-felt prayers and
praises. We have featured some extracts of some of them here. It really shows the mood of the
various devotees in their servitude to Śrīla Prabhupāda.
The feature article of this issue is a very instructive essay penned by Śrīla Prabhupāda in the 1960s.
It sheds light on the most important topic of today’s context — how to achieve perfection in a
world filled with cheater-teachers.
The song section features a beautiful, melodious song called the Dāmodarāṣṭakaṁ, a song
dedicated to the playful and naughty Kṛṣṇa who was tied up by mother Yaśodā. The depth of
that extraordinary pastime of Kṛṣṇa is explored in this song. In fact, in the lunar month Kārtika
(Oct-Nov), which is fast approaching, devotees sing this song to Lord Kṛṣṇa in the temple both
morning and evening.
THE So many blissful festivals have transpired here at ISKM since the success of the Ratha Yātrā —
like Jhūlana Yātrā, Balarama Jayanti, Janmāṣṭamī, Rādhāṣṭamī,
Radha-Kṛṣṇa Boat Festival, Vāmana Dvādaśī. We have
mentioned these in the News Room section.
EDITORIAL
Apart from all the festivals, our main activity is to educate and
benefit everyone with the message of Kṛṣṇa on a daily basis,
thus giving everyone a chance to liberate themselves. We are
conducting classes every day at our temple. You can come and
join the classes either physically or on Facebook Live. Don’t miss
Tattvavit dāsa this valuable opportunity!
Deepavali is the day that Lord Rāmacandra returned to Ayodhyā from His exile and the residents
of Ayodhyā received Him into their city and into their hearts with the lamplights of their love.
In our case, we have exiled the Lord from our hearts for millions of years. Therefore, we have been
exiled from the spiritual world and are suffering in this miserable material world. It is high time
we receive the Lord back into our hearts with full devotion. It all starts with reading Bhagavad-
gītā. Please commit yourself to it. And we are here to help you at ISKM.
Thank you.

ŚRĪ JAGANNĀTHA
RATHA YĀTRĀ 2019:
A COLOSSAL SUCCESS
The Divine Journey of Lord Jagannātha pulled the curtain with monumental
success. There is no denying and disputing of the fact that the colorful festival
brought joy and satisfaction to all those who were a part of it.
Everyone was in exuberant ecstasy to pull the chariots of their Lordships Śrī
Jagannātha, Śrī Baladeva and Śrī Subhadrāmayī. The wide variety of stalls sold
various items such as Kṛṣṇa souvenirs, books by Śrīla Prabhupāda and other
merchandise. Accompanied with thunderous kīrtana,
sumptuous Prasādam meal for every single guest, and
a wide variety of stalls, the festival was a real treat for
everyone who attended it.
Śrī Kṛṣṇa Janmāṣṭamī is the most significant festival in the Vaiṣṇava calendar
of Sri Krishna Mandir to commemorate the birth of Lord Kṛṣṇa, The Supreme
Personality of Godhead. The Festive fervour hit high and the preparations
reached an auspicious crescendo on Janmāṣṭamī day.

Sri Damodarastakam
About the song:
Every year during the whole month of Kartika, often called Damodar by Vaishnavas, the pastimes of Lord Krishna are celebrated: especially
the story of the young butter-thief and his mother Yaśoda. The verses of the Damodarastakam both tell the story and illustrate its spiritual
significance to the aspiring devotee.

mother was churning into butter and then stealing the butter that was kept hanging from a swing) is quickly running from the wooden grinding
mortar in fear of mother Yasoda, but who has been caught from behind by her who ran after Him with greater speed--to that Supreme Lord, Sri
Damodara, I offer my humble obeisances.
2) (Seeing the whipping stick in His mother’s hand) He is crying and rubbing His eyes again and again with His two lotus hands. His eyes are
filled with fear, and the necklace of pearls around His neck, which is marked with three lines like a conch shell, is shaking because of His quick
breathing due to crying. To this Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, whose belly is bound not with ropes but with His mother’s pure love, I offer my
humble obeisances.
3) By such childhood pastimes as this He is drowning the inhabitants of Gokula in pools of ecstasy, and is revealing to those devotees who are
absorbed in knowledge of His supreme majesty and opulence that He is only conquered by devotees whose pure love is imbues with intimacy
and is free from all conceptions of awe and reverence. With great love I again offer my obeisances to Lord Damodara hundreds and hundreds
of times.
4) O Lord, although You are able to give all kinds of benedictions, I do not pray to You for the boon of impersonal liberation, nor the highest
liberation of eternal life in Vaikuntha, nor any other boon (which may be obtained by executing the nine processes of bhakti). O Lord, I simply
wish that this form of Yours as Bala Gopala in Vrndavana may ever be manifest in my heart, for what is the use to me of any other boon besides
this?
5) O Lord, Your lotus face, which is encircled by locks of soft black hair tinged with red, is kissed again and again by mother Yasoda, and Your
lips are reddish like the bimba fruit. May this beautiful vision of Your lotus face be ever manifest in my heart. Thousands and thousands of other
benedictions are of no use to me.
6) O Supreme Godhead, I offer my obeisances unto You. O Damodara! O Ananta! O Vishnu! O master! O my Lord, be pleased upon me. By
showering Your glance of mercy upon me, deliver this poor ignorant fool who is immersed in an ocean of worldly sorrows, and become visible
to my eyes.
7) O Lord Damodara, just as the two sons of Kuvera, Manigriva and Nalakuvara, were delivered from the curse of Narada and made into great
devotees by You in Your form as a baby tied with rope to a wooden grinding mortar, in the same way, please give to me Your own prema-bhakti.
I only long for this and have no desire for any kind of liberation.
8) O Lord Damodara, I first of all offer my obeisances to the brilliantly effulgent rope which binds Your belly. I then offer my obeisances to Your
belly, which is the abode of the entire universe. I humbly bow down to Your most beloved Srimati Radharani, and I offer all obeisances to You,
the Supreme Lord, who displays unlimited pastimes.

Procedure:
1. Using clean hands or a fork, break the jackfruit into small pieces, removing any tough
stems, and then combine well with 1 tbsp of the lemon juice in a bowl.
2. Combine the tomatoes, chillies, thyme and remaining lemon juice in another bowl, then
add the jackfruit mixture. Add the coriander and parsley and mix well.
3. Sift the baking powder and chickpea flour into
a separate bowl. Add 120ml water, mix
and season with salt and black pepper, then combine this with the jackfruit mixture.
The consistency should be slightly sloppy, so add a little more water if needed.
4. Divide the mixture into eight and shape with your hands into small flat cakes, about
1cm thick.
5. Pour a little vegetable
oil into a large frying pan set over a medium heat. When the
oil is hot, carefully place as many cakes as will fit in a single layer in the pan
without touching. Cook for about 5 minutes, until golden brown on the bottom, then
turn over and cook for another 5 minutes until crisp and cooked through.
6. Fry the fritters in batches, adding a little more oil
as needed, and keeping them warm
on a baking sheet in the oven on a low heat.

Srila Prabhupada
Vyasa Puja 2019 Homages
Significance of Vyāsa-Pūjā:
In this great ocean of material existence, everyone is struggling very hard and a rare few fortunate souls get reclaimed by a real Ācārya, who
descends into this world by the order of the Supreme Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa for the very same purpose. Such great souls have the power to reclaim the
entire universe but the majority of the population, who are poor and unfortunate, who are only after paltry sense gratification, are blinded by
their own foolishness and, therefore, are unable to recognize such great souls, what to speak of taking shelter of them?
But those who have taken shelter of such great souls realize that they owe an eternal debt to their spiritual master for saving them from the
otherwise unending cycle of birth and death in this material world. The best recourse for them is to constantly glorify such a great soul,
remember his valuable instructions, and dedicate their life for preaching the message of Kṛṣṇa that he preached.
A bona fide spiritual master is considered the representative of Śrīla Vyāsadeva because he broadcasts the teachings that were penned down by
Śrīla Vyāsadeva in the form of Vedic literature. The anniversary of the appearance day of the spiritual master is therefore called Vyāsa-Pūjā.
In our society ISKM, we observe the Vyāsa-Pūjā on the day after the Janmāṣṭamī every year as His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Prabhupāda was born on that day in the year 1896. Every year, we submit written words of praise and prayers to him.
This year, it fell on the 25th of August. So many devotees wrote beautiful prayers in his glorification. We have compiled a PDF of all the prayers
by ISKM devotees worldwide. You can read it here: http://bit.ly/VP19Homages. In this section, we have showcased selected extracts from a few
devotees’ homages. We could not do enough justice to it owing to the limitation of space in this magazine.
http://bit.ly/VP19Homages
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Your Divine Grace, my eternal spiritual master.
You are not any kind of spiritual master but a bona fide spiritual master coming down from the
eternal paramparā directly from Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
You were disallowed entry to our country for reasons best known to Kṛṣṇa Himself but you proved
that devotional service to the Lord cannot be impeded by any means. These are the characteristics of
transcendental loving service to Puruṣottama, the Supreme Personality of Godhead: it is causeless,
and it cannot be obstructed in any way.
This you have proved although you were barred from entering this country and also the authorities
have clearly stressed that they have no room for Kṛṣṇa consciousness here, but nonetheless your
divine instruction through your transcendental message in your books, you manage to penetrate all
obstacles to bring many souls in this country into Kṛṣṇa consciousness thus perplexing everyone and
showing how Kṛṣṇa consciousness cannot be hampered in any way whatsoever. This shows how truly
bona fide you are. Indeed, you are a pure devotee, a representative of Lord Kṛṣṇa, without a doubt.
In the pioneering days here, a devotee wrote to you of the difficulties in preaching here, and he
exclaimed that to set up a temple here would be very difficult and practically impossible. He added, the
most we possibly could do was have some house programs but you encouraged by writing that it may
be difficult but by and by there will eventually be a temple with gorgeous worship of the Lord.
Presently, we do have a temple established with gorgeous deities and with many dedicated devotees
devoting their lives for the propagation of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. This shows your divine position of
being a tri-kāla-jña, knowing past, present and future, again proving your unique position as a dear
most servant of the Lord inevitably.
Doing a simple Harinām Saṅkīrtana in the streets would inevitably cause skirmishes with the
authorities here let alone doing some very big festivals like Ratha Yātrā. But you wanted Ratha Yātrā
to be performed worldwide in every major city and we do see how you had accomplished them with very
great success in many major cities of the world.
We could hardly fathom the idea of how Ratha Yātrā would ever be possible here, but again, by your
causeless mercy, this has now come to pass. Here, it is now a major celebrated festival with thousands of
participants and it is very vibrantly growing year by year. This is again an exhibition of your divine
mercy to the many conditioned souls who would otherwise not have obtained the supreme mercy of Lord
Jagannātha.
All these events come to prove time and again of your supreme position of being a very very
confidential servant of the Lord, and that you can make the impossible possible for the Lord.
This is an era where so many unscrupulous so-called gurus are teaching so many concocted
philosophies as they themselves are bewildered by your external energy. It is said:
You, on the other hand, could see through all these to give us the perfect understanding like the sun
clearing all the doubts of darkness.
SB 11.22.6: By interaction of My energies, different opinions arise. But for those who have fixed their
intelligence on Me and controlled their senses, differences of perception disappear, and consequently,
the very cause for argument is removed.
This undoubtably again proves how Māyā cannot bewilder the pure devotees of the Lord and you
being in such a position have, time and again, shown us all the fallacies of all the so-called religious
doctrines with clear references from the scriptures, thus safeguarding us from falling prey to them all.
All these help us conditioned souls tremendously to strengthen our faith and to make some steady
progress towards love of God, Kṛṣṇa.
Śrīla Prabhupāda, we cannot find words of gratitude to honor you for your mercy in making sure
that we develop love of Kṛṣṇa one way or another. How can we ever live without your mercy? I cannot
comprehend this. Please do not forsake me. I cannot even dream of leaving the shelter of your divine
lotus feet, for you are my very life and soul.
So, my dear Śrīla Prabhupāda, on this most auspicious day of your divine appearance I can only pray
to you time and again with a straw in my teeth and with folded hands, please do not forsake this most
fallen soul of yours.

GEMS OF HUMILITY
Because of this fault finding and because I had been committing many offenses unto to your lotus
feet, I am always been kicked by Māyā and intoxicated with sense gratification. These are actually
very nice learning lessons for me how not to commit offenses but still, I didn’t learn my lessons. That
is my misfortune. But I have an unbreakable hope that you will show some mercy upon this soul.
I offer my respectful obeisances unto my spiritual master, the deliverer of all fallen souls, whose mercy
turns the dumb into eloquent speakers and enables the lame to cross mountains. Watch the video to
know more!

“These people are after meat, wine and illicit sex, How will they accept the philosophy of Kṛṣṇa? They

“Oh Kṛṣṇa why have you brought me here, what can I do? But because you have brought me here, there
must be a purpose, alright make me dance as you like”
And so it happened, The holy name danced on his tongue in Tompkins Square Park. It penetrated and
melted the hearts of tens, hundreds, thousands and now millions everywhere. Bringing a ray of light
into the darkness. Your existence on this earth awakened the dormant spiritual inertness.
Neil Armstrong, ‘the 1st man on the moon’ said “one small step for a man, one giant leap for
mankind” when they faked the moon landing, but the true step for mankind happened when your
divine lotus feet landed on this God-forsaken earth.
Every step you took on this planet was a giant leap for mankind
Every step you took was a step to stop the repetition of birth and death for mankind. Your lotus feet
alone act like thunderbolts hurled to shatter the mountain of sin stored in the minds of mankind.
Only a fool would forsake your lotus feet like a man who gives up the protection of his mother for the
shelter of a witch.
Viśvambhar dāsa
We are living in a dollar-chasing world where capitalism is religion, banks are churches or temples,
bankers are priests, wealth is heaven, poverty is hell, rich people are saints and poor people are sinners,
commodities are blessings and MONEY IS GOD. This is the mantra of materialism.
In recent times, we have achieved a considerable ability to manipulate our external environment with
the help of science and technology, but the means by which we live have outdistanced the ends for which
we live. Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles but misguided
men.
It is rampantly seen that whenever true spiritual knowledge, begins to vanish from the face of the earth
and tends to lapse into oblivion, the divine messengers revive that knowledge by awakening man to
the true knowledge of his real heritage. Srila Prabhupada, without any bias, you are one such divine
messenger who awakens generations to knowledge of their existential constitution as subordinate
part-and-parcels of Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but owing to ignorance, are
presently encaged in temporary material bodies and trying to lord it over material nature, which is the
source of all miseries.
Srila Prabhupada, you have sailed to America, the headquarters of materialistic culture, at an
advanced age, utterly alone and practically penniless, for propagating Krsna Consciousness.
Srila Prabhupada, you went all the way showing how to face all the inevitable challenges of material
existence, challenges that become multiplied for those who declare war against Maya, by preaching
the glories of Krishna. You were empowered by Krishna, no doubt, but that empowerment didn’t mean
that you didn’t have to encounter and counter formidable challenges. Your empowerment didn’t cause
those problems to magically disappear; it meant that you magically persevered, no matter how many
and how massive the problems. This magical perseverance came from your pure devotion to Krishna -
pure devotion that manifested as your unbreakable determination to carry out the instruction of Srila
Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura, whatever the obstacles and reversals.
Through your words as manifest in your books, you have given us the essence of the Vedic literature.
Your books are the result of your enormous personal sacrifice, waking up early in the morning after
just a few hours of sleep. Throughout the day, you would speak about Krishna with those who came to
meet you. And in the night, you spoke about Krishna with everyone.
Through your books, you inspired and empowered not only those who are living in the remotest corners
of the world but also devotees who have come and will come in many subsequent generations. Srila
Prabhupada, our most eloquent words can’t be enough to delineate even a fraction of your glories. Yet
how can we not glorify you, the great soul who has rescued us from the folly and futility of a life
without Krishna? The best glorification we can offer you is not through words but through actions —
through our dedication to the mission of preaching that you said is our family business. All glories to
the merciful mission of Krishna that you presented and represented, that you protected and propagated,
that you loved and lived.
You have eternally been an empowered agent of the Lord and so your spectacular activities have no
limit. Only within the limited range of time and space that is allowed for my mind and senses to
grasp, I am already baffled in realizing your Glories. You have come to the western world, a world built
on four pillars of sinful life, a world devoid of Vedic knowledge and common sense, a dark abode where
the mlecchas dwell and the demons thrive.
You have left the vicinity of Vṛndāvana in order to come to teach us that which we have forgotten, that
we are eternal servants of Lord Kṛṣṇa. In this work of predilection which you have so expertly carried
out, I am yet to find a devotee who has done what you have achieved. Indeed I consider your activities
greater than those of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu Himself.
Śrīla Prabhupāda, you are the representative of all demigods and thus, I am sure that your glories are
sung and relished by the beings in higher planetary systems. To sing of your activities and to hear
of them is the perfection of the speaking and hearing powers. The Supreme Lord is more pleased of His
devotees’ being worshipped than He Himself being glorified. This ceremony of offering our prayers to
you is, therefore, your intelligent way in training us in the art of harvesting the Lord’s blessings.
Your intelligence is unchecked and is limitless in the matter of engaging us in Lord Kṛṣṇa’s
service. The Supreme Lord has unfolded a monumental plan through you and the fortunate souls,
who are willing to correct the bygone mistake of challenging His authority, will take shelter of your
instructions and give up their so-called independence.
Only the most intelligent amongst all human beings will surrender to you, having understood this
material world to be no better than stool and they engage in your blissful service without any material
desire. Such great souls simply crave to sprinkle some of the particles of dust at your lotus feet upon
their forehead.
