Moisture Content Testing in Soil

The document describes a lab experiment to determine the moisture content of soil samples using two methods: the oven dry method and the speedy moisture tester method. Four soil samples were tested using each method and the results were recorded. Graphs comparing the moisture content as measured by each method show good agreement between the two, though the speedy moisture tester readings tended to be slightly lower. The oven dry method is more accurate but also more time-consuming, while the speedy moisture tester provides faster results in the field when immediate measurement is needed. Accurately determining moisture content is important for understanding how soil properties change with moisture and avoiding issues like differential settlement.

To Determine Moisture Content of Soil by Speedy Moisture Tester.

COMMENTS:
Moisture Content of Soil is an essential property and must be calculated properly to avoid any sort of
errors. There are two methods for determining the moisture content of soil, first by Oven Dry Method
and other by Speedy Moisture Meter.

Oven Dry Method is more time consuming and thus more accurate in measurement of moisture
content. On the other hand, Speedy Moisture Meter is less time consuming and thus producing less
accurate results. In field, usually speedy moisture meter is used for immediate determination of
moisture content or in cases where it is not possible to carry out oven dry test.

Moisture content must be determined accurately in order to study the response of soil and its bearing
capacity under different moisture conditions, otherwise it can result in serious consequences like
differential settlement and also leading to failure of the structure.
