Grain Size Distribution of Soils Analysis

1) The document describes a lab experiment to determine the grain size distribution of a soil sample through sieve analysis and hydrometer analysis. 2) Sieve analysis showed that over 31.53% of the sample passed through the #200 sieve, requiring hydrometer analysis for complete distribution. 3) Hydrometer analysis was conducted and readings were taken over time to generate a gradation curve showing the percentage of particles finer than various sizes.

INFERENCE:
As the percent passing Sieve no. 200 is greater than 12%, thus hydrometer analysis is required
for achieving the complete Grain Size Distribution of the Soil Sample.

COMMENTS:
Hydrometer analysis is used for accurately examining the particle size distribution of soil
particles of sizes between 0.075 mm t0 0.001 mm. Hydrometer analysis is done generally for
grain size analysis of Fine Grained Soil. Hydrometer works on the basis of Stroke’s Law
according to which, the velocity at which grains settles out of suspension, all other factors being
equal, is dependent upon the shape, size and weight of the grains.
In the given sample, percentage passing through Sieve # 200 was greater than 12%,
Hydrometer analysis is being done in order to obtain accurate grain size distribution of soil
sample.
