The Editor wishes fo express hs grateful thanks to Kate for hor personel involvement and enthusiasm for the projec NTRODUCING KATE BUSH In January 1978 | heard Kate Bush’s first single WUTHERING HEIGHTS on the radio. It passed me by. Then in February I saw her perform it on TOP OF THE POPS, all stiletto heels, exploding hair, and theatrical gestures. | was highly amused. As that single raced to national and then international success and I heard it again and again, | was intrigued and then fascinated, Who was this strange woman who came seemingly out of nowhere? In June 1978 | stood in the record section of W.H.Smith at Victoria Railway Station in London and read the lyrics on the back of THE KICK INSIDE, Kates first album. | bought it, and then like millions of fans across the globe, was lost forever into Kate's shadowy world of fantastic reality. Music surrounded Kate since her earliest days, Her father wrote songs and played piano, the instrument she was to take up to such devastating effect. In creating her music Kate draws heavily on her background, especially perhaps the family interest in listening to and performing English and Irish folk music (amongst her earliest musical memories are singing those wonderful rousing sea shanties). Their and her interests ranged much wider — the rock revival of the sixties and its progressive outgrowth, jazz rock, and Brecht (when will the full effect of that Lotte Lenya album she received on her twelfth birthday be fully realised). Real music, whatever label is foisted on it by critics, is incarnate emotion, and Kate has always been drawn to that emotional expression. She absorbs the feelings, combines them with her own, ‘and by a process almost alchemical iransmutes the energy into something very special Kate is an artist in many dimensions. Her involvement in her work is total. She expresses her ideas — her emotions — in music, in lyric, and in the visual image; in dance and expressive mime and highly original video and film work. A Kate Bush recording is a KATE BUSH recording. She wrote the song, arranged it, played most of the keyboards, sung all the lead and most of the backing vocals, and produced it. Likewise in her visual work. The live shows were entirely her own concept. The ideas for the videos are her own, taking off from her own story-boards, and are now directed by her taking forward her long standing interest in film. Few artists have such firm control of their artand their career. Kate is often her own subject: In almost all of her songs her own feelings and experiences are there, almost invisible, blended into the more apparent theme. Her experience is transferred fo other characters in different situations. All that is left of the reality isan emotional echo, but that echo is the energy at the heart of the song, from the adolescent paranoia of HAMMER HORROR to the mature celebration of love renewed that is THE NINTH WAVE. Kate’s music will either creep quietly into your being or as is more often the case, it will assault you with the subtlety of an SAS house clearing squad. It will dynamite your ears and forcibly occupy your emotions. You don’t passively listen to it, you surrender to its emotional force. You may resist, and may do and protest strongly, but indifference is not an option. ‘Let me in!” she demanded on that perceptive first single, and Kate is often the demoness who comes out of the night to disrupt your dreams. You hear the songs and absorb the emotion, and it finds a response in the depths of your own soul. You may not know what she is singing about, but ie feel it inside. You know where she has been, often you've been there too. Her music tells all, The sixty-six songs here are the fraction of Kate's creative output she has let us hear to date. Many more songs never made it, because, perfectionist as she is, Kate considered that they were not good enough. Here you will find not only the singles everyone knows - WUTHERING HEIGHTS, BABOOSHKA, RUNNING UP THAT HILL - but every song of her own Kate has recorded, including for the first time the bulk of the material from NEVER FOR EVER and THE DREAMING, together with those wonderful B-sides like RAN-TAN WALTZ, NE T’EN FUI PAS and BURNING BRIDGE. Kate Bush makes music that changes lives, as many of her fans know - all those who listen with ‘open hearts, that impossible to define Kate Bush audience of all ages, races, and interests throughoutthe entire world. Their supportand encouragement helps Kate to go on. Letthis book be dedicated to them. P.D.Fitzgerald-Morris Co-Editor of Homeground” The International Kate Bush Fanzine. THE EMPTY BULL RING Words and Music by KATE BUSH ‘This is a song that I first had ideas for quite a few years ago. But at night he climbs out of the window ‘and runs off to a bullring when there is no-one there and he fights @ bull that doesn’t exist.
