Ten times in Berlin, and ten times again in London, the Hungarian national anthem was played; and in Helsinki sixteen Hungarian victories were applauded by the sportsmanlike crowds. With respect to size of population Hungary was the twenty-eighth of the sixty-nine nations represented at the Helsinki Games. Yet on the parade, Hungary marched fourth on account of the number of her competi- tors. The modesty and sportsmanlike behaviour of the Hungarian competitors won the acknowledgement of all. Proof of the high level of Hungarian sport is the fact that in a number of sports (Soccer, waterpolo, swimming, fencing, ca- noeing and the modern pentathlon) Hun- gary has risen to the ranks of the world’s best or has become outstanding (women’s gymnastics, wrestling, track and field athletics), We shall always be proud of the fact that as early as the autumn of 1894, when the holding of the first Modern Olympic Games in Athens seemed most doubtful, baron de Coubertin was prepared to entrust Hungary with the organization, although sports were still at an initial stage in this country at that time. As Hungarian sport grew and developed, Hungary has, since 1911, repeatedly put forward the request to the wise leaders of the IOC to make our beautiful capital an Olympic City. Unfortuna- tely, this desire has remained unrealized so far. Now we appear once more before the TOC, in order to make our voice heard when the question of appointing the scene of the 1960 Olympic Games is decided. The Budapest People’s Stadium built for Olympic purposes has been unanimously praised by foreign experts. If the IOC should honor Budapest with the organi- zation of the 1960 Games, the capacity of the People’s Stadium will be increased todéja pourvu notre vélodrome d’installations modernes, et lors des championnats du monde de pentathlon moderne, nous avons démontré par la qualité de nos terrains, de nos chevaux et de notre organisation que nous sommes capables de répondre aux exigeances les plus difficiles. Le haut niveau de notre architecture ainsi que la parfaite compétence de nos techni- ciens sportifs assurent que toutes nos installa- tions et constructions répondent parfaite- ment A toutes les nécessités. Quand nous demandons pour Budapest le droit @organiser les Jeux Olympiques, nous, Hongrois, sommes uniquement mus par le désir de servir et de développer franche- ment Pesprit pur de olympisme. Nous ne permettrons donc pas que pendant la durée des Jeux Olympiques ni le Stade populaire, ni aucun autre stade, ni les deux villages olympiques soient le thédtre dune manifestation politique. Désirant voir se dérouler ces Jeux dans les formes les plus convenables, nous ne permettrons donc pas qu’ils puissent étre utilisés 4 des fins commerciales, sous quelque aspect que ce soit. Il ne découle naturelle- ment que nous n’autoriserons aucune in- stallation & caractére commercial ou publi- cataire. Nous n’admettrons pas que quiconque puisse porter atteinte au noble idéal olym- pique contribuant aux relations amicales entre les peuples. D’avance, nous prions instamment la presse de ne pas publier durant les Jeux de tableaux dits de “classement général”. Cette décision, nous Ia rappelle- rons tous les jours au stade populaire et dans les différents stades. Si le CIO voulait bien décider de nous accotder le droit dorganiser les Jeux de 1960. nous les organiserions de fagon exemp- lon World Championship, held here last year, proved that as regards as tracks, arenas, and horses Budapest can meet the most exacting demands. Hither in building or at least in the drafting stage are the establish- ments for the other branches of Olympic sports, including the blueprints of the separate men’s and women’s Olympic villages. Our splendid architecture and the know- ledge of our thousands and thousands of excellently trained sportsmen will be the guarantee that all the sports grounds and facilities will fully meet with all wishes. We Hungarians are motivated only by the honest service of the pure Olympic idea and its further development when we request to hold the Games in Budapest. We shall not permit, therefore, the holding of any sort of political demonstration or mani- festation whatsoever, either in the People’s Stadium, or in any other arena or sports establishment. ‘As we wish to stage the Games in a fitting setting, we shall not permit that they be used for commercial purposes. In conform- ity with this, we shall not issue permits for the erection of commercial establish- ments — or advertisements. We shall not permit anyone to violate the noble Olympic idea, which is serving the cause of friendly ties among the peoples. We shall request the Press in advance, emphatically, to refrain from publishing during the Games statistics on the standing of the unofficial scoring by points in connec- tion with the victories and placings achieved, for these are useful only for stirring up chauvinistic feelings, or serving commercial purposes. In the World Championship for fencers under 21 years of age the young Hungarian competitors shone in every event; Imre Polyék won a world title in wrestling; and our table-tennis players stood the test at the World Championship in Utrecht.
