Lecture: The Communicative Approach or
Communicative Language Teaching
Background
The Communicative Approach or
Communicative Langue Teaching is a teaching
approach that emphasizes the functional and
communicative function of language for
learning to take place.
• The communicative approach started in the 70s
as a reaction to the structural approach( such as
the Audiolingual one) that focused on the
development of foreign language learners’
structual competence.
• That is, instead of focusing only on the acquisition
of grammar and vocabulary , the Communicative
Approach aimed at developing the learner’s
competence to communicate in the target
language (communicative competence), with an
enhanced focus on real-life situations.
I have enclosed below a book by Guy COOK
entitled « Applied Linguistics » in which there
are two chapters discussing not only what the
CC means but also the communicative
appproach and communicative language
teaching. They are as follows:
Chapter 4: English language teaching
Section: the communicative approach P. 35
Chapter 5: language and communication PP. 40-
48
