• Saudi Arabia is one of the world’s largest producers of desalinated water, contributing over 20% to the global desalinated water output.
Water is produced from desalination plants spread across the Arabian Gulf coasts and Red Sea.
• Currently, thermal desalination is the most widely adopted technology. However, due to technological advancements, there has been a
continuous shift towards RO technology.
• Desalination water production is predicted to increase due to various government initiatives, including investments in new plants and
improving the efficiency of existing desalination plants.
• Additionally, as part of the strategic objectives of the National Transformation Plan (NTP), the Kingdom aims to increase the proportion of
desalinated water produced by private operators to 52% from the current share of 36% by 2020.
Power & Water Utility Company for Jubail and Yanbu (Marafiq)
• Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), owned by Saudi Arabia government, is the largest water desalination company in the world,
with a production capacity of XX million m3/day of water.
• A number of independent water and power producers (IWPPs) contribute to desalination in the Kingdom.
• Desalinated water producers use both seawater and brackish water as a feedwater source. After treatment, water is supplied to the
commercial and residential sectors through pipelines. The Water from IWPP is further used for municipal, commercial and industrial
usage. The Electricity and Cogeneration Regulatory Authority (ECRA) regulates the seawater desalination industry. It also monitors the
performance of service providers and encourages private sector involvement.

Types of Antiscalant Sea Water Antiscalant
Antiscalant
• Antiscalants are specialty chemicals, which prevents scale formation during the usage of sea water and brackish water. In Saudi Arabia,
suppliers and consumers broadly classify antiscalants as per the water source (sea water, brackish water).
• Sea water antiscalants used when water source is from an ocean or Sea. Sea water usually has a Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) of
15,000 & above. Antiscalants are customised as per the feed water TDS, plant design, and recovery rate.
• Brackish water antiscalants are used when the water source is from saline streams or sea water mixed with ground water. Brackish
water has a TDS of below 15,000. Antiscalant dosage and type are decided based on feed water quality and its end user application.
• In RO desalination plants antiscalants are used as a scale inhibitor for RO membranes.
• Antiscalants are added into feed water before the feed water is allowed to flow through RO membrane. The infusion of antiscalant
prevents scale formation by delaying the reaction time between magnesium and calcium, allowing the water to be purified by the RO
systems seamlessly.

• Based on the properties of the source of water as well as the water treatment technology used, different types of antiscalants are available
in the market including phosphonate-based, sulphur-based, fluoride-based, polymer-based and carboxylate-based. The antiscalant market
in Saudi Arabia is estimated to be USD xxx in 2017, mainly driven by a significant increase in the number of desalination plants.
• The industrial segment has been mainly accounted for by the oil & gas sector. The further increase in number of desalination plants,
driven by depleting renewable sources and government initiatives is expected to result in an increase of antiscalant demand.
• The Kingdom is focusing on building non-oil sectors such as chemicals and plastics, which would lead to a rise in industrial demand. Since
industrialization has also further strained the water resources, the government has advised industries not to use groundwater thereby
increasing the need for water treatment. These treatment plants are anticipated to further drive the demand for antiscalants in the
country.
Sea Water
2019 2025F
Brackish Water
• Sea water is mostly preferred by industries and desalination plants which are near to coastal areas while brackish water is usually
preferred by industries and desalination plants who are located centrally or far away from sea water source. Depleting water resources
has made sea water the most preferred source for water for desalination and other industrial activities. Industries have pipelines to source
desalinated water from plants on coastal areas. Dosage for antiscalants is less in sea water as compared to brackish water as the content of
sulfate and carbonates is less.
