FUTSAL
- It is a modified version of soccer, typically played indoors, with five players per side.
- Developed in Brazil and Uruguay in the 1930s and 1940s as a solution to available football fields
ORIGIN
- “Futsal” (Five-a-Side Soccer) started in 1930, Montevideo, Uruguay, when Juan Carlos Ceriani
created a version of football/soccer for youth competition in YMCAs.
- Ceriani’s goal was to create a game that could be played indoor or outdoor but was similar to
football/soccer
- Frequently referred to as Five-a-side or Mini-soccer.
- Became popular throughout South America, particularly Brazil
- It is now played under the auspices of FIFA all over the world.

o Paraguay won the first South American Cup
- 1979
o Six more American Cups were held this year with Brazil winning them all.
- 1980
o Continued dominance of Brazil with a victory in the first Pan American Cup is 1980
o Brazil won it again in the next time it was played in 1984

- U.S. Futsal was founded in 1981 and incorporated in January, 1983
- Osvaldo Garcia – it’s first president
- Referred to as Minisoccer, five-a-side soccer, futbol sala, futebol de salao
- Alex J.C. Para – current U.S. Futsal president
