Dear reader,

Hello and welcome! Our editors are happ to present to ou the fourth annual edition of The Siren. In the
following pages, ou will find a collection of select student writing and artwork received throughout the 2019 -
2020 school ear.

Since The Siren was created four ears ago, it has been the goal of our editors to release an annual print edition
in Ma in celebration of a full ear s worth of work and content. The tradition is to distribute this edition to
students free of cost throughout the last few weeks of the school ear. We acknowledge that our usual goal is
not possible this ear due to the unprecedented global COVID-19 pandemic. There are no print editions for
distribution this ear. Instead, this publication is available e clusivel in PDF format for online viewing.
There is one upside in this - we can trul call this edition eco-friendl !

We recogni e that the wave of global strain and hardship created b the pandemic is affecting each and ever
one of us on different levels and to var ing degrees. Because members of the Southwest High School
communit are ph sicall separate right now to honor the essential social distancing code, it is important to
remain connected in other wa s.

We see this collection of writing and art as a medium to connect. Artistic e pression is universal, and it is
vital. We connect through words and through the spaces between words, the silence. We connect through
image, through brushstroke, through pencil mark. We connect through the stories told through artwork.

As ou venture into the pages that follow, we invite ou to ask ourself how ou connect. Where do ou see
ourself among these words and images? What resonates with ou? What shows ou something new? The
writers and artists who chose to share their work rel on ou to answer these questions for ourself.

We e tend a great thanks as we pass our part of the job over to ou. The work that has gone into the making
of this maga ine, both on the part of student editors and featured student artists, is now in our hands (or, more
literall , on our screen). It s our turn as readers to connect with the talent, wisdom, and wit of those
students who have chosen to share their creative work.

Thank ou, and enjo !

Sonia Carroll, Editor-in-Chief
