ARBITRAGE

Definition

Arbitrage is buying and selling of an asset from different platforms. It is purchasing a good in one market
and then selling it in another at a higher price. It is a risk-free profit for the trader or stockholder.

People involving in arbitrage are called arbitrageurs. This term can be seen in financial implements such
as bonds, stocks, commodities, currencies, etc. One main important thing while getting into arbitrage
trade is that the number of assets bought and sold should be the same; only the price difference is taken
as the remaining payback from the business.

It is a known fact that markets are not perfectly efficient. The price differences between identical
financial forums result in commonly observed inefficiencies, and the exploitation of these inefficiencies
helps build this trade known as arbitrage. The market fluctuations and imbalances are the roots of this
trade. Any intelligent person who keeps the right eye in the matter will immediately observe the rise
and downfall of the market prices, and hence making use of this imbalance will make vast sums of
profits in no time.

The example of vintage clothing can be an excellent way to understand arbitrage. An ordinary handbag
of old clothes may cost $30 at an auction. But, at boutiques that sell vintage clothes or online shopping
stores, brand conscious customers might pay $300 for the same clothes. An intelligent buyer can spend
$30 at auction and sell it online for ten times the original cost.
This example shows a marginal profit of almost 250$, even if we take the shipping costs and
transactional fees into account. Arbitrage is a potent market instrument that is used everywhere, from
minor household sales to international marketing. This marketing tool is practiced worldwide, no matter
which sphere of economy you take into consideration.
