DESCRIPTION OF THE FAMILY
The Calucin family is composed of five members namely; Geraldo Calucin (father),
Deveelove Calucin (mother), Daryce Calucin (eldest), Daryne Calucin (the middle child) and
Graydon Calucin (youngest).
Deveelove Calucin (index patient), 47 years old is a housewife. Geraldo Calucin, her
husband, 54 years old is a marine seaman. All of their children; Daryce (24 years old, Daryne
(20 years old) and Graydon (15 years old) are going to school. The Calucin family is a devoted
Roman Catholic and goes to church every Sunday.
FAMILY STRUCTURE
• Classification according to Structure: Nuclear Family
Deveelove’s family is a nuclear family because she is living with her husband and her
three children only.
•Classification based on Residence: Neolocal
The family resides independently, both are away from their parents.
•Classification based on Descent: Bilateral
Deveelove and her husband can seek help from both of their families during crisis.
•Classification based on Authority: Equalitarian
Deveelove and her husband share authority when it comes to disciplining their children,
how to budget and take care of their home.
•Classification based on Naming: Patronymic
Deveelove and her three children use the name of her husband which is “Calucin”.

•Classification according to Relationship: Conjugal bond
Deveelove and her husband are happily married and have their priorities in taking care
of their children. They bond and care for their children intimately. Their children also have a
good relationship with each other and with their parents.
•Classification according to Set-up: Democratic
Both Deveelove and her husband have a say in all decision making and problem solving
in times of crisis. They handle their family both as equal as the other.
•Classification according to Social Class: Middle Income Class.
The Calucin family belongs to middle-income class based on NEDA social classification of
annual income since they earn between the minimum and maximum amount of P500,000.
FAMILY FUNCTION
Biological
Deveelove is a stay at home wife and does most of the chores (ex. cooking, cleaning,
washing). She looks after the wellness and safety of their home and updates herself of
upcoming activities of their health center.
Economic
Deveelove and her husband share in their family’s income and budgeting.
Education
Both Deveelove and her husband motivate their children to do well in school and monitor
their school performance.
Physiologic/Affection
The Calucin family is open and shows respect with each other. When there are
misunderstandings they discuss and solve it immediately. They raised their children as God-

fearing, well-disciplined, and encouraged them to establish a healthy relationship with relatives,
peers, and acquaintances outside the family circle.
Sociocultural
Calucin family socializes and participates in some activities in their community. They also
socialize with their neighbors.
STAGES OF FAMILY LIFE CYCLE
The family life cycle is a series of stages families go through as the structure of the
family changes. It talks about the various developmental stages in the family status of families
and describes the manner in which a family function.
In the case of the Calucin family, they are currently on 2 stages: Family with Adolescent
(Stage IV) since she has 1 teenager (15 years old) and Launching family since her 2 daughters
are both studying away from home and living on their own.
According to Mommy Deveelove, she did not have a hard time coping up with her
children since they easily listen and follow the rules she and her husband made.
1st Order Change: The family members, respectively the mother and father have transitioned
and adapted to the additional members of the family (children). They had included their children
in their daily routine and attended to their children’s needs. Also, the family works out money
matters in the family with children and shares responsibilities of family living.
2nd Order Change: The parents have adjusted their parent-child relationship towards their
eldest daughter by being more open minded and understanding to her needs and changes (ex.
physically/biologically and emotionally) as well.

FAMILY PSYCHODYNAMICS
According to Mommy Deveelove, she was 17 years old when she met her husband and
had 3 children namely Daryce, Daryne, and Graydon. Mommy Deveelove and Daddy Geraldo
are both originally from Mauban, Quezon. When Mommy Deveelove and Daddy Geraldo got
married in 1995, they decided to live on their own house.
Mommy Deveelove is a housewife while Daddy Geraldo is a marine seaman. Mommy
Deveelove mentioned that they work together as a team when it comes to house chores. Also,
they have not experienced any major or life changing situations in their relationship. However, if
small problems were to surface, they would immediately find a solution as a family. Lastly, she
mentioned that they can rely on their extended family for support.
IMPACT OF ILLNESS OF THE FAMILY
According to the index patient, they do not get sick easily and cannot recall a major
illness dealt by the family, but she mentioned the all her three children have asthma acquired
from her husband’s family. Nonetheless, no hospitalization or major illnesses were noted.
Geraldo (her husband) is the least person to get sick in the family. However, Mommy Deveelove
mentioned that she and her husband are occasional drinkers.
ECONOMIC STATUS OF THE FAMILY
The main source of financial support of the family are coming from Mr. Calucin. He is a
marine seaman with net income of approximately 150,000 per month. The family’s income is
just enough for them and sometimes they still manage to keep money for their savings.

POVERTY CLASSIFICATION OF THE FAMILY
A recent study by Albay Representative Joey Salceda, which makes use of the same
approach in defining the middle class, said a family of five is considered middle class if the
household earns anywhere between ₱23,381 and ₱140,284 per month or around ₱25,000 and
₱150,000, respectively in 2020 prices.

With this, the Calucin Family is classified as a middle-income family having an annual
income of more than PHP 1,500,000 is above the poverty threshold.

Interpretation: The Calucin Family is considered as a highly functional family with a score of
10.
Adaptation: The husband provides money for the family with his work as a marine seaman.
Degree of satisfaction: The family is satisfied in how the resources are shared and utilized.
Partnership: All family issues and decisions for their child are all decided by the whole family.
Satisfaction in solving problems by communication: the family is very supportive with each
other and is open to ideas and suggestions on how to solve their problems.
Growth: Very satisfied with the nurturing attitude of the family.
Affection: Very satisfied since the husband is very loving and supportive.
Resolve: Time and space are highly given. The family bonds together every Sunday by
attending mass and eating outside for leisure.

SCREEM is a tool used in the assessment of the family as to its capacity to participate in
provision of health care or to cope with crisis. Components could be family’s weakness or
strength based from the table above where the index patient was able to be mentioned.

APPLICATION OF PREVENTIVE MEDICINE
Preventive medicine is the science and art of preventing diseases, prolonging life and
promoting physical and mental health and efficiency. Overall, Deveelove prepare healthy meals
for her family on a daily basis since her husband and her children needs to maintain their good
health and wellness for their activities, ensuring that the family eat proper meals three times
daily with proper nutritional plate. She also instructs her children to drink a lot of water since
they are fond of eating salty and sweets. They do have vitamins for supplementation. Mommy
Deveelove and her family do not easily get sick, so she is not that worried about it. If sickness
occurs, they intended to go to the nearest health center in their area. Aside from proper
nutrition, personal hygiene is also observed in the family. She makes sure that everybody in the
house bathes regularly and as needed especially her youngest son. Nevertheless, she
maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of their home. Since they live from the province,
sometimes they have herbal medications for their health.
