Martin Strel is a long-distance swimmer from Slovenia. He has been passionate abo~t the issue of clean w
years, and he has tried to do something about it by swimming. He has swum sorne of the longest rivers in th aterfor rnan1

instruments. Cateura works at the garbage dump. {Cola also works
at the dump. He collects trash every day. Then he takes
sorne of it to his workshop and~ to recycle it.
One day, Cola was working with a piece of tin when
Favio Chávez walked in. Chávez was carrying a violin. He
said, "Can you make a violín out of garbage?" According to
one version of the story, Cola had never seen a violin befare, but he studied
~ ~ . Favio's violín and measured it. By the end of the day, he had made his first
instrument! And once he had started, he c ouldn't stop! Soon he had built
/ e ellos, double basses, flutes , trumpets ami ...

l Let's rewi nd and start the story from the beginning.


Luis Szarán is a conductor. Sorne years befare our story starts. he had ' !\
decíded to give everyone in Paraguay tht: experience of music because,
he said, "Music can change people's lives." One day, he went to Cateura.
The kids there loved his music and everyone wamed to try it. But they didn't
have any instruments, and they didn't have money to buy any. That' s when
Favio Chávez entered the story. He is an ecological technician, but he ]oves music,
too, and he knew (and had worked with) Luis Szarán. Suddenly he hada brainwave.
The kids wanted instruments; they couldn't afford to buy any. But what they did
have was garbage . Lots and lots of garbage. And that' s when he went to see Cola.

Soon the kids all had instruments (made by Cola), so Chávez .s.t.arted-a- s.mall
orchestra . He called it the Recycled Orchestra. And people loved it! And then.
someone put a video on Facebook, and things took off. Suddenly everyone wanted
to hear and see the Recycled Orchestra from Cateura,
Paraguay. Favio Chávez took "his" kids ali around
South America and then to Europe. They even
played concerts with the heavy metal band
Metallica in front of hundreds of thousands
of people!
Now people ali over the world know about
the Recycled Orchestra and are sending new
musical instruments to the kids of Cateura so
they don't have to play with only garbage-made
instruments. But what a wonderful reuse of old
materials. The world has learned something from
the creativity of the Recycled Orchestra.
