Biggest Takeaway from A Raisin in the Sun
The biggest thing I learned from reading the play and watching the movie is that
sometimes people are extremely “money hungry.” I always understood that money plays a big
role in peoples’ lives, but I did not think that people were so centered around it.
In my own life, I have seen many people constantly work hard for their money. That in
and of itself is not a bad thing, but it turns into something bad when they are trying to use money
that is not necessarily theirs. In A Raisin in the Sun, Walter wanted to use the insurance money
from his fathers’ death even though everyone agreed that Lena should be the one to use it. I feel
like rather than Walter mourning the death of his father and spending the money on something
that the whole family can benefit from. For example, Lena bought a house for the whole family
to live in and she decided to tell Travis “(Putting her finger on his nose for emphasis) She went
out and she bought you a house! (The explosion comes from WALTER at the end of the
revelation and he jumps up and turns away from all of them in a fury. MAMA continues, to
TRAVIS) You glad about the house? It’s going to be yours when you get to be a man”
(Hansberry 91). This is a perfect example of how Lena thinks about others before herself. She
could have easily bought something that she could use but instead she bought something for the
rest of her family. From my own experiences, this is something that I would do too. I would get
something for everyone else before I would get something for myself.
While I am not with anyone at the moment, I understand to Ruth being upset with her
husband about the new baby. Personally, I believe that children are blessings from God and even
if they were not planned or they are not able to be cared for properly, I still think that they were
brought to this earth for a reason. Let’s say that I were to have them with the a child right now.
Obviously, I am not prepared to take on that task since I am only in high school, but I would try
my absolute best to provide them with the things that they need. All the money I have would be
used for the things that they need. On the topic of money, I am fortunate to not be in a situation
where my family is in need of more. For others, they may not have the most in the world but they
learned to enjoy what they have. Even though my family is financially stable, I still would
obviously like to have nice things but at the same time, I still am thankful for the things I have
now. When I see others are in need, the caring side of me comes out and I try helping them with
as much as I can. I am like that because of my emotional and loving personality. In the end, I
want the best for people and if that means sacrificing things for myself, then I will do it.
