Appendix: Useful Tables for Reading an Annual Chart................................................... 25

© 2007 by the American Feng Shui Institute Zi Wei Dou Shu Case Study 3 1
Introduction
One of the things a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart can tell you is this: what will be my
fortune this year? It can answer questions like:
¾ Will I get a promotion this year?
¾ Can I get married this year?
¾ Will I make a lot of money this year?
¾ Will I get divorced this year?
¾ How will my health be this year?
This way, we can be ready to grab opportunities as they arise or prepare for the
worst. We can be active and stir things up when times are good, and try to hibernate and
stay still when times are bad. This is a primary way of increasing benefit and reducing
risk. If you are still, there is less exposure to risk, so this is appropriate in bad times. But
if you stay still when the stars are good, there will not be much opportunity for benefit.

Different levels of the chart have different uses. The lifetime chart shows the
personality. Annual charts show events. The Large Cycle is somewhere in between. It
describes larger trends for a period of time.

You cannot read an annual chart in isolation. The information for the year must be
taken in the context of the Large Cycle, which must be taken in the context of the lifetime
chart. Think of it like this: the lifetime chart is like your state or province. The Large
Cycle is like your city or town. The annual chart is like your street. The monthly chart is
like your house. Your street is definitely influenced by your city and your state. A street
in New York City is not the same as a street in Los Angeles. The larger periods of time
have a definite influence over the annual reading.

The annual reading has two components. One is the Small Cycle, based on your
age. The other is the current year’s chart based on the branch of the current year. Both of
these have a ming and eleven other palaces. They influence each other. In addition, the
stem of the current year brings in transforming stars, and there are other current year stars
too.

Many of the principles discussed in this class can also be applied to monthly
readings.

This class includes a newly introduced technique for determining which year will
bring problems, especially in the area of health. It also discusses the current year and the
Small Cycle, and describes some additional stars that can be calculated based on the
current year. We then go over all the combinations of the Fourteen Major Stars and their
meaning when found in an annual ming. Besides this, there are three brief case studies
that illustrate how the annual reading can show an extraordinary event.

We hope this class will help improve your ability to make annual predictions.

1. In which year will health problems occur?
Health is the most important thing in life. Without it, nothing else goes smoothly.
There is an old Chinese memorization poem about calculating in which year a
person will have problems. If you work it out, you can make the following diagram:

earth 5 wood 3 x x
si wu wei shen
earth 5 Element type fire 6
chen and you
earth 5 affected palace x
mao xu
water 2 water 2 metal 4 x
yin chou zi hai

To interpret this, proceed through the following steps:

1. Find your element type from your original chart. For example: water 2 type.

2. Check any year that the small cycle (your age), or even the current year falls into
the palace of the above table that contains your element type. This year is ‘not
very smooth.’ The memorization poem doesn’t say what type of trouble, but
Master Sang’s experience tells him that the trouble is usually related to health. It
does not mean you will definitely get sick, but it does mean you are more
vulnerable.

3. Check the illness palace for that year. If it has the annual 48 Hua Ji (especially a
double Hua Ji) or if stars like 17 Di Jie, 18 Di Kong, 104 Bing Fu, 96 Da Hao, 37
Qing Yang, and 38 Tuo Luo gang up together, this is critical.

4. In addition to this, check if the current year opposes your birth year. For example:
a person born in a si year during a hai year. This increases your vulnerability.

5. Also check if the current year opposes the palace of your small cycle (age) ming.
For example: your small cycle ming is in chen during a xu year. This is called
your consuming year and also increases your vulnerability.

6. Even the element of the branch of a palace or of the branch of the current year can
increase vulnerability – when it dominates your element type. For example: if
your element type is water 2, when the small cycle illness palace is in an earth
palace or during an earth branch year, you are more vulnerable. If your element
type dominates the year, it is not as bad; you only feel uncomfortable.

7. If the element of the palace’s branch reduces your element type, you may be
moody, but not necessarily sick. For example: the illness palace of a water 2 type
person in a yin or mao branch palace (wood).

© 2007 by the American Feng Shui Institute Zi Wei Dou Shu Case Study 3 3
The above actually applies all cycles, including the large cycle (10 year) and the month.

Note: This calculation relates to the eight directions and the eight trigrams. Water 2
should avoid gen, the northeast (which includes chou and yin). Wood 3 should avoid li,
the south (fire). Metal 4 should avoid kan, the north (water). Earth 5 should avoid zhen
and xun, the east and southeast (mao, chen, si). Fire 6 should avoid dui, the west (you).

In general, a person should also avoid living in a house that sits in the direction shown in
the table above.

Extra: While we are on the topic of health, here is a little additional information:
• Ju Men Hua Lu in the illness palace: the person can be cured of an illness by an
unlicensed practitioner, even if disease is critical.
• Tian Liang in the current large cycle ming or illness palace: the person can be
cured of an illness, even if disease is critical.

© 2007 by the American Feng Shui Institute Zi Wei Dou Shu Case Study 3 4
Example: Female born June 15, 1953, chen hour:
2008 Illness Palace
Tian Ji Hua Ji
is reflected in
si wu wei shen
water 2 type 2007 Illness Palace
2008 is a wu zi year so 9 Tan Lang Hua Ji
2 Tian Ji is transformed by Hua Ji is reflected in
chen you
1 Zi Wei
9 Tan Lang Hua Ji (lifetime)
mao zi
2007 Small Cycle Ming 2008 Small Cycle Ming
(age 54) (age 55)
2 Tian Ji Hua Ji (2008) bad for water 2 type
8 Tai Yin
bad for water 2 type
yin chou zi hai

• This person is a water 2 type, so the yin and chou palaces cause problems.
• The small cycle (current age) ming falls into the yin palace in 2007 and the chou
palace in 2008. Therefore she is more vulnerable during those years.
• To check the details, look into the illness palace.
o In 2007, the illness palace is in you. You has Tan Lang Hua Ji reflected in.
This is the lifetime Hua Ji, so it is not so bad. There are no sha stars inside
this palace. But to make it worse, 2007 is a hai year and opposes the si
birth year (a consuming year).
o In 2008, the illness palace is in shen. That palace has Tian Ji Hua Ji
reflected in from the yin palace. Tian ji is transformed by Hua Ji because
2008 is a wu zi year. The wu stem makes Tian Ji Hua Ji. The annual Hua
Ji makes 2008 more dangerous than 2007. Fortunately, there are no sha
stars in the illness palace.
• Therefore, this person is especially vulnerable to health problems during these
two years.

Note: The strength of the problem may vary over a year. Since we are using the small
cycle, the timing is related to the birthday, not the current year beginning February 4th.
In the above example, she is Chinese age 54 from June of 2006 until June of 2007,
with her small cycle ming in yin and illness palace in you. From June of 2006 until
February 3rd, 2007, it was a xu year, so she was not troubled by her consuming year until
February 4th, 2007 (hai year).
She is Chinese age 55 from June of 2007 until June of 2008, with her small cycle
ming in chou and illness in shen. However, the annual Hua Ji does not strike until
February 4th of 2008, so the situation is not as critical before this. But it is her consuming
year until February 4th of 2008.

2. The small cycle (age) and the current year
Some schools only look at the twelve palaces for the current year not for a person’s small
cycle. In these schools, the palace with the same branch as the current year is the ming
for everyone. For example, in a xu year, the xu palace would be the ming for everyone.
Our school (Central Province School 中州派) includes a personal ming and as well as the
one for the current year. Both sets of palaces can affect us.

The small cycle is most important, but the current year is also quite significant. If good
stars are in these two mings, it will be a good year.

If the small cycle and current year are in same palace (嵗限相逢), the effects (good or
bad) will be very strong, even extreme, so watch out. It is the same if they are in opposite
palaces. In these cases, look for Hua Lu and Hua Ji first. Their effects will be very strong.
The outcome, good or bad, shows up right away. If the current year ming is the same as
your lifetime or large cycle ming, you should also be careful.

When bad stars are prominent in the current year or small cycle chart, you don’t have to
worry all year. Check month by month to see when the danger is strongest. Don’t travel
or do anything risky at that time.

You can even check the day stem for daily Hua Ji’s. On a bing day, month, or year, Lian
Zhen is transformed by Hua Ji. So in a bing year, be especially careful of bing days and
months if Lian Zhen is having a bad affect in your chart.

Here are some additional comments on reading the small cycle or current year chart:
• Tian Ji, Wu Qu, Lian Zhen, and Tai Yin are very sensitive to Hua Ji. Be careful:
o 8 Tai Yin: Unhappy things will happen in regard to money or peach
blossom. Tai Yin Hua Ji also causes insomnia.
o 2 Tian Ji: car accidents. They may happen frequently, but not necessarily
with a lot of injuries. Lots of trouble and instability in the family.
o 4 Wu Qu: car accidents. They may be less often than Tian Ji, but more
serious. Injury by metal, plane crashes. (Remember, the star of 6 qian gua
is Wu Qu. Double 6s or 6-7 also causes injury by metal.)
o 6 Lian Zhen: bleeding, prison. If Lian Zhen is in the same palace as 25
Tian Xing, and the person does anything illegal, they will get caught and
go to jail.

• Tai Yin, Tan Lang, and Lian Zhen all bring peach blossom qi. Tai Yin not only
brings romance to a man, it even does so for a woman.

• A double Hua Lu in the karma palace means the person is always content. One
Hua Ji in karma is unhappiness. A double Hua Ji in karma makes a person
extremely unhappy.

Some Other Current Year Stars
• You can calculate the annual 15 Wen Chang, 16 Wen Qu, 54 Hong Luan, 36 Lu
Cun, 37 Qing Yang, and 38 Tuo Luo. You can even calculate the annual 39 Tian
Kui and 40 Tian Yue. These stars can affect you a lot. It is significant when some
of them gang up.

• If the annual 37 Qing Yang or 38 Tuo Luo overlap with the lifetime 37 Qing
Yang or 38 Tuo Luo, it is a big disaster for that palace.

• A person can get married when the current year’s 54 Hong Luan arrives in the
annual ming, but it is a bad sign for older people because they are less likely to be
getting married. For older people, it often means the spouse has bleeding or may
even die.

Besides this, calculate the Four Transforming Stars for the year and the two series of
Current Year Stars. Although we won’t talk about them in this class, the current year
stars add a lot of information.

3. Annual luck for each star combination in Ming

These comments are for the large or small cycle or for the current year ming. Sometimes
you can extrapolate from this to come up with the meaning of these stars in other palaces.

1 Zi Wei: This star is an especially good omen for someone in a high position. He or
she can expand their business. It is easy to get a promotion, get elected or appointed.

¾ Zi Wei in zi or wu: If it is with good stars, there will be a promotion and things go
smoothly.

¾ Zi Wei with Po Jun in chou or wei: There is a revolution or change, but it is a change
for the better.
¾ With 17 Di Jie, 18 Di Kong, or the annual 96 Da Hao: it is not a good change.
This is also true for the four sha (37 Qing Yang, 38 Tuo Luo, 21 Huo Xing, 22
Ling Xing). All of these stars have a bad effect even if they are not in the same
palace but are in the three combinations relationship or opposite. They make
you waste energy. Business goes down so you are forced to change. There may
be legal entanglements.
¾ With 48 Hua Ji: Something scary but not dangerous.
¾ With Hua Ji and Qing Yang: Bleeding. If pregnant, she needs a c-section. It
may mean death for an elderly person.

¾ Zi Wei with Tian Fu in yin or shen: It is always a good year. You will not be
bothered much, even by sha. A benefactor comes, especially if with 23 Zuo Fu, 24
You Bi, 39 Tian Kui, or 40 Tian Yue.

¾ Zi Wei with Tan Lang in mao or you: A year of entertainment, social life, enjoyment,
romance, and one-night love. You go out a lot.
¾ With Hua Lu: It brings money, maybe through peach blossom.
¾ With Hua Ke: It brings good name.
¾ With Hua Ji: There will be gambling losses, or you lose money because of
peach blossom.

¾ Zi Wei with Tian Xiang in chen or xu: Tian Xiang always depends on other stars. It
does not have a definite nature of its own. You need to look at the three
combinations relationship to determine the good or bad. It is important to note when
sha is present.

¾ Zi Wei with Qi Sha in si or hai: Good for promotion and expanding business. This
signifies changing something old, breaking through. There can be a sudden big
benefit, even winning the lotto. It may mean winning a big fortune in one night.

© 2007 by the American Feng Shui Institute Zi Wei Dou Shu Case Study 3 8
2 Tian Ji: People always feel Tian Ji when it comes. They don’t always feel stars like
Tian Fu which is easy and accommodating.
Tian Ji always has an ‘unpeaceful heart.’ 心不寧 Tian Ji cannot rest. Tian Ji will
get sick if it retires. Tian Ji and Tan Lang are very similar, but Tian Ji has physical and
mental movement; Tan Lang only has mental movement. Tian Ji should learn meditation
to calm the mind.
The question is, is the movement of Tian Ji good or bad? The more you move, the
more you win or lose, depending on which stars it is with. If Tian Ji is with good stars
like 36 Lu Cun or 45 Hua Lu, the more you move, the better off you are. If it is with bad
stars like 48 Hua Ji, the more you move, the more headaches you have: in family, love,
money, whatever palace it is in.
Tian Ji is very sensitive to 45 Hua Lu: the busier you are, the more money comes in.
It is also sensitive to 48 Hua Ji: there can be lots of trouble in the family. The remedy for
Tian Ji Hua Ji is to move your home or at least to remodel. This causes lots of movement
and chaos but doesn’t really do any harm. In this way, the nature of Tian Ji is satisfied
without disrupting your life in a bad way.

¾ Tian Ji without other major stars: Movement, busy, unstable, new opportunities.
The person moves his house, remodels, changes career. Change is fast.

¾ Tian Ji with Tai Yin in yin or shen: Tai Yin likes stillness, but Tian Ji wants to move,
so there is internal conflict.
¾ With Hua Lu and/or Tian Ma: You make a lot of money going out to do
business. You have a benefactor.
¾ With the current year 96 Da Hao, 48 Hua Ji or other sha stars: Financial
problems.
¾ Tian Ji Tai Yin with Hua Ji: It is easy to go bankrupt. Also a sex trap,
especially from a female (Tai Yin). It is not good for love. In the illness palace,
this combination also indicates insomnia (for that year or ten-year period).

¾ Tian Ji with Ju Men in mao or you: Unstable. Lots of gossip.

¾ It is okay with good stars. If Hua Lu is there, it signifies sales and publicity.
The person gives speeches. Again, the more you move, the more benefit you
get.
¾ With bad stars: Lots of trouble, gossip, lawsuits.
¾ If with Hua Ke: It is good for entertaining people.
¾ But mostly, this combination is not very beneficial.

¾ Tian Ji with Tian Liang in chen and xu: Tian Liang changes bad into good, and Tian
Ji is busy so there is frustration and lots of problems. But you can solve them and
become stable and happy. This year is better in the last six months, after the
problems have been solved.
You may see helpful people who are in a high position or who are old. You may
inherit money from an older person.

© 2007 by the American Feng Shui Institute Zi Wei Dou Shu Case Study 3 9
3 Tai Yang: Tai Yang and Tai Yin are different from other stars. You have to know if
they are dark or light. If dark, they have no power. If Tai Yang is dark and with bad stars,
there is fighting, difficulty, depression, and obstacles. If it is bright but has bad stars, it is
not affected as much. If it is bright and with good stars, it is good for power, name, a
benefactor, and good appearance, but you may not receive money. Tai Yang radiates out
so it easily spends money. Tai Yang in chen or si is best. When it is in the wu palace, it is
too extreme, too bright.
Tai Yang stands for the head. Tai Yang Hua Ji signifies a headache, eye problems,
or dizziness.

¾ Tai Yang with Tai Yin in chou or wei: A double character with lots of change.
¾ With Hua Lu: It is good inside and out.
¾ With good stars like 45 Hua Lu, 46 Hua Quan, or 47 Hua Ke: Money and name
increase; there is benefit.
¾ With Hua Ji: It is bad and everyone knows you have problems. You cannot
sleep. There is headache, dizziness, or eye problems.

¾ Tai Yang with Ju Men in yin or shen: Two jobs, different opportunities that year.
You do something different. Some of it is in front of others (Tai Yang, bright) and
some is hidden (Ju Men, dark). Since it is sometimes light and sometimes dark, it is
frustrating.
¾ With 45 Hua Lu, 46 Hua Quan, or 47 Hua Ke: speech, name, publicity.
¾ If with bad stars such as 48 Hua Ji: You get in trouble from speech, you offend
people, lawsuits. Keep a low profile, say less. Showing off brings problems.
¾ If with Tian Yao or Hong Luan: Peach blossom, two girlfriends, one public and
one hidden.

¾ Tai Yang with Tian Liang in mao or you: Depends on location of Tai Yang.
¾ In mao palace: Good, you are stronger in the end. Example: in spouse palace,
your relationship is not so warm in the beginning of the year, but you get closer
later.
¾ In the you palace: Hot in the beginning, but it cools off later. It is worse in the
you palace; there may be physical and mental labor. You consume a lot of
energy. Even if you make a double effort, you get a single return. It is
especially difficult in the beginning of the year, but better in the end. There are
delays in finishing projects.

© 2007 by the American Feng Shui Institute Zi Wei Dou Shu Case Study 3 10
4 Wu Qu: This star is sensitive to 45 Hua Lu or 48 Hua Ji.
45 Hua Lu brings very strong money luck. Lots of money rushes in, especially if
it has a double Hua Lu.
With 47 Hua Ke, your name shoots up, but you may just look good and be
without money.
With good stars, you have success in everything you plan.
With bad stars, you just spend money.
48 Hua Ji brings very bad money luck. Be very careful in the stock market.

¾ Wu Qu with Tian Fu in zi and wu: Good combination.

¾ With Hua Lu: You can keep money because Tian Fu is a stable warehouse.

¾ Wu Qu with Tan Lang in chou or wei: You gamble, and you can learn the method to
play. But you better not have Hua Ji!
¾ This combination is especially good when Hua Lu comes in. If it is with Hua
Lu, it is very auspicious - you may hit the lotto.
¾ If with Huo Xing and Hua Lu together: Big money! You can become a
billionaire in one day, especially on a fire stem day.
¾ If with Hua Ji: Bankruptcy, you can lose all your money in one day (maybe due
to peach blossom).
¾ If with Hua Ke: Your name booms up.

¾ Wu Qu with Tian Xiang in yin or shen: Tian Xiang helps Wu Qu but good or bad
depends on what else is in the same palace or in the three combinations relationship.
This combination is very much afraid of 48 Hua Ji.

¾ Wu Qu with Qi Sha in mao or you: If with good stars, you can start something new
and make money.

¾ Wu Qu with Po Jun in si or hai: Revolution. Po Jun is like water with waves up and
down.
¾ If with good stars: It turns out good. You can make money, but life is still
unstable.
¾ If with Hua Lu: you may have cosmetic surgery.
¾ If with Hua Ji: don’t do anything risky. With this combination, people may live
together without getting married.

© 2007 by the American Feng Shui Institute Zi Wei Dou Shu Case Study 3 11
5 Tian Tong: Always an easy relaxed year, except when Tian Tong is with Hua Ji. In
this case, you will experience frustration.
With 48 Hua Ji, Tian Tong has love problems and heartbreak, but the person
becomes less lazy. If 37 Qing Yang is opposite, your love is cut off that year.
Tian Tong with Hua Ji and Hong Luan signifies bleeding. These stars must be in
the same palace, not in the three combinations relationship.
Some schools say Tian Tong is never transformed by Hua Ji because it is called a
‘lucky star.’ Our school says it can be transformed by Hua Ji, and the experience of
Master Sang bears this out.
Tian Tong with 47 Hua Ke brings peach blossom. If 54 Hong Luan is also there, you
can get married that year.

¾ Tian Tong with Ju Men in chou or wei: Gossip tangles things up but you have good
luck in eating. You eat delicious food for free.
¾ With 45 Hua Lu or 26 Tian Yao or 58 Xian Chi: Secret romance.
¾ With 48 Hua Ji: Love trouble due to miscommunication. Easy to have tears.

¾ Tian Tong with Tian Liang in yin or shen: Love blows hot and cold. It begins cold
but is hot at the end. There is a problem but you can solve it.
¾ With Hua Ji: Petty people and back stabbers trap you. Love and emotions are a
problem. If also with Qing Yang, love is cut off.
¾ With 17 Di Jie, 18 Di Kong, and 48 Hua Ji together: (very strong), you will
separate with someone close. They will walk away or die. The loss hurts badly.
This is too big for Tian Liang to solve.

¾ Tian Tong with Tai Yin in wu or zi: Peach blossom, stronger with Hua Lu. Tai Yin is
strong and good. Tian Tong likes to enjoy, no arguments.

6 Lian Zhen: Lian Zhen is similar to Tan Lang. It can negotiate, but has a stronger
character. It stands for power. It is related to bleeding, criminality, and peach blossom.
Lian Zhen Hua Ji can mean bleeding, jail, or catching a sexually transmitted
disease. When Lian Zhen is transformed by Hua Ji, stay away from entertainment places.
With 25 Tian Xing and Hua Ji together: bleeding or jail.
If with Hua Lu or good stars: Lots of money, promotion, good opportunity. Lian
Zhen Hua Lu with 28 Jie Shen is the time when you get released from jail.
Without good stars: average.

¾ Lian Zhen with Tian Xiang in zi or wu: Depends. Look at the good stars and the sha.
¾ If with 48 Hua Ji, 17 Di Jie, and/or 18 Di Kong, there may be a jail sentence or
even a tendency to commit suicide.

¾ Lian Zhen with Qi Sha in chou or wei: You fight for something.
¾ With good stars: You get it.
¾ With bad stars: Don’t bother trying.
¾ Qi Sha, Lian Zhen with Hua Ji in travel: Disaster. You die in an accident while
traveling, buried by the side of the road.
¾ With Hua Lu: You make money or get peach blossom.

¾ Lian Zhen with Po Jun in mao or you: If pregnant, a premature birth, especially in
the you palace. Your plans happen prematurely. You destroy old love to get new
love. Unstable, a bad combination. Tumors or blood problems.

¾ Lian Zhen with Tian Fu in chen or xu: Very stable. Even with Hua Ji, bad things are
not so bad.

¾ Lian Zhen with Tan Lang in si or hai: Lots or opportunities for fun, but it can be
dangerous, especially if transformed by Hua Ji. You could end up in jail for statutory
rape or something like that. It could also be a peach blossom situation that gets you
killed. This combination is selfish; it always looks good but doesn’t do good.
¾ With Hua Lu: Good for people in the entertainment industry.

7 Tian Fu: This star is never directly transformed by Hua Ji. Even if Tian Fu sees bad
stars, it just dreams, imagines, gets bored or moody. It is not affected in any critical way.
Tian Fu is almost always beneficial, it is always a benefactor.
Tian Fu is never a pioneer; it is not adventurous. But Tian Fu is stable and rises up
step by step. In this respect, it is the opposite of Tian Ji.

¾ Zi Wei with Tian Fu in yin or shen: Always a good year. You will not be bothered
much, even by sha. A benefactor comes, especially if with 23 Zuo Fu, 24 You Bi, 39
Tian Kui, or 40 Tian Yue.

¾ Wu Qu with Tian Fu in zi and wu: Good combination.

¾ With Hua Lu: You can keep money because Tian Fu is a stable warehouse.

¾ Lian Zhen with Tian Fu in chen or xu: Very stable. Even with Hua Ji, bad things are
not so bad.

© 2007 by the American Feng Shui Institute Zi Wei Dou Shu Case Study 3 14
8 Tai Yin: A sensitive star, but generally good.
With good stars like Hua Lu: Happiness, peach blossom. With Hua Lu, it is
always good peach blossom. Tai Yin Hua Lu also brings a benefactor; you make money.
With Hua Ke: You get promoted, get married, or have a baby.
Tai Yin doesn’t like 21 Huo Xing which is fire and makes it very irritated.
If with Hua Ji and in a daytime palace, or if with 37 Qing Yang or 38 Tuo Luo:
unhappy things happen.
Tai Yin Hua Ji signifies poor sleep. With double Hua Ji, it is a peach blossom
disaster. Tai Yin Hua Ji can also signify money problems.
When Tai Yin is in the daytime palaces, it is not strong enough to fight with Hua
Ji. In the night time palaces, it is better situated.
But with Hua Ji in the hai palace Tai Yin brings good changes that year. It brings
promotions or good finances. This is a special thing occurring only in the hai palace.

¾ With the current year 96 Da Hao or 48 Hua Ji or other sha stars: Financial
problems.
¾ Tian Ji Tai Yin with Hua Ji: It is easy to go bankrupt. Also a sex trap,
especially from a female (Tai Yin). It is not good for love. In the illness palace,
this combination also indicates insomnia (for the current year or also for the
ten-year period).

¾ With Hua Ji, it is bad and everyone knows you have problems. You cannot
sleep. There is headache, dizziness, or eye problems.

¾ Tian Tong with Tai Yin in wu or zi: Peach blossom. It is stronger with Hua Lu. Tai
Yin is strong and good. Tian Tong likes to enjoy; there are no arguments.

9 Tan Lang: Enlightenment can happen in a year where Tan Lang is predominant.
In more mundane situations, there is increased social activity or a change in
thought, emotions, or lifestyle during Tan Lang years.
If with Hua Ke: Peach blossom, good moods, gaining fame, money, and romance.
If with Hua Lu: Peach blossom.
If with Huo Xing and Hua Lu: You can get big money overnight (gambling, stock
market, lottery). Tan Lang likes the fire of Huo Xing.
If with Hua Ji: A bad time to go to a casino or have peach blossom. Tan Lang is not
very afraid of Hua Ji because it is wood element which denotes flexibility. There is not a
lot of danger, except with Tan Lang Lian Zhen Hua Ji (peach blossom disaster, etc.).
However, Tan Lang Hua Ji in the children palace of the current age or current year can
signify kidnapping.

¾ Zi Wei with Tan Lang in mao or you: A year of entertainment, social life, enjoyment,
romance, and one night love. You go out a lot.
¾ With Hua Lu: It brings money, maybe through peach blossom.
¾ With Hua Ke: It brings good name.
¾ With Hua Ji: There will be gambling losses or you lose money because of
peach blossom.

¾ Wu Qu with Tan Lang in chou or wei: You gamble and you can learn the method to
play. But you better not have Hua Ji!
¾ This combination is especially good when Hua Lu comes in. If it is with Hua
Lu, it is very auspicious; you may hit the lotto.

¾ Lian Zhen with Tan Lang in si or hai: Lots or opportunities for fun, but dangerous,
especially if transformed by Hua Ji. You could end up in jail for statutory rape or
something like that. It could also be a peach blossom situation that gets you killed.
This combination is selfish; it always looks good but doesn’t do good.
¾ With Hua Lu, it is good for people in the entertainment industry.

10 Ju Men: Ju Men represents the mouth. Ju Men makes it easy for gossip or lawsuits
to happen. Since Ju Men is a dark star, it is often a lawsuit when you are without fault. Ju
Men is usually a civil suit, not a criminal case. Lian Zhen is the star that brings criminal
court cases.
Ju Men Hua Quan is bad in the palaces representing relatives. They always win
arguments. They speak with authority and power, but no one likes them.
Ju Men Hua Ke is pretty or handsome, but it represents an affair, not a spouse.
If with Hua Lu, Hua Quan, or Hua Ke, everything is good, you can make money.
It is good for an attorney, good for getting a promotion. If you ask for a job, you can get
it.
With 92 Sang Men and Hua Ji in the current age or current year ming, there may
be a funeral. If you have this combination, don’t go to funerals or visit the hospital. You
will bring this qi back with you.
Ju Men Hua Ji with Da Hao: You lose money due to lawsuits.
Ju Men with Wen Chang or Wen Qu and Hua Ji: Trouble due to documents. Not
good for gambling and investments.
Ju Men with Wen Qu and Hua Ji in property signifies a funeral.
Ju Men Hua Ji: An attorney loses his case.
Ju Men Hua Ji in illness: Hidden disease.
In illness Ju Men with Qing Yang signifies surgery.

¾ With Hua Ke: It is good for entertaining people.
¾ But mostly, this combination is a minus.

¾ Tai Yang with Ju Men in yin or shen: Two jobs, different opportunities this year. Do
something different. Some of it is in front of others (Tai Yang, bright) and some is
hidden (Ju Men, dark). Since sometimes it is light and sometimes it is dark, it is
frustrating.
¾ If with Tian Yao or Hong Luan: Peach blossom, two girlfriends, one public and
one hidden.

¾ Tian Tong with Ju Men in chou or wei: Gossip tangles things up but good luck in
eating. You eat delicious food for free.
¾ With 45 Hua Lu or 26 Tian Yao or 58 Xian Chi: Secret romance.
¾ With 48 Hua Ji: Trouble in love due to miscommunication. Easy to have tears.

© 2007 by the American Feng Shui Institute Zi Wei Dou Shu Case Study 3 17
11 Tian Xiang: With Tian Xiang, you cannot tell about the year. The luck depends on
other stars. You need to look at the whole chart. With Tian Xiang, look at Zi Wei and
Tian Fu, the big stars.
Tian Xiang is better with Zi Wei than with Wu Qu or Lian Zhen.
Tian Xiang is good with Wen Chang or Wen Qu: The person has knowledge.
Tian Xiang is very sensitive to 17 Di Jie, 18 Di Kong, and Da Hao, so never do
any risky investment.
There is an old saying that if Tian Xiang is in your current year ming or small
cycle ming and sees some of the four sha (including in the three combinations
relationship), that is the year you go to hell (die). It is very afraid of these stars.
With 54 Hong Luan or 55 Tian Xi: Marriage or a baby.

¾ Zi Wei with Tian Xiang in chen or xu: Tian Xiang always depends on other stars. It
does not have a definite nature of its own. You need to look at the three
combinations relationship to determine the good or bad. It is important to note when
sha is present.

¾ Wu Qu with Tian Xiang in yin or shen: Tian Xiang helps Wu Qu but good or bad
depends on what else is there or in the three combinations relationship. This
combination is very afraid of 48 Hua Ji.

© 2007 by the American Feng Shui Institute Zi Wei Dou Shu Case Study 3 18
12 Tian Liang: The difficulty comes first and the good comes later, but usually it is
someone else who makes it good. You receive benefit from others, especially the elderly.
Whenever it is in current year or current age ming, if something unhappy happens, at
least there will be a sweet ending. Tian Liang solves all problems in the end. Like plum
flowers, it blooms in the autumn or winter in the snow.
Tian Liang signifies a hot and cold marriage. The couple breaks up and gets back
together, unless the husband is a lot older than the wife. He leaves an inheritance.
Keep a low profile and be humble in the beginning of the year, so the bad thing is
less. Watch out for back-stabbing. Good things come out late, but may be better than you
expected.
Tian Liang is an officer star, so it is good for a government official. There is a
promotion if no bad stars are nearby.
Older people help you this year but difficulty has to come first. (Help will come from
the south if Tian Liang is in wu, from the north if it is in zi, etc.)

¾ Tian Ji with Tian Liang in chen and xu: Tian Liang changes bad into good, and Tian
Ji is busy so there is frustration and lots of problems but you solve them and become
stable and happy. This year is better in the last six months, after the problems have
been solved.
¾ You may see helpful people who are in a high position or who are old. You
may inherit money from an older person.

¾ Tai Yang with Tian Liang in mao or you: Depends on location of Tai Yang.
¾ In mao palace: Good, you are stronger in the end. Example: in spouse palace,
your relationship is not so warm in the beginning, but you get closer later.
¾ In you palace: Hot in the beginning, but it cools off later. It is worse in the you
palace; there may be physical and mental labor. You consume a lot of energy.
Even if you make a double effort, you get a single return. It is especially
difficult in the beginning of the year, but better in the end. There are delays in
finishing projects.

¾ Tian Tong with Tian Liang in yin or shen: Love blows hot and cold. It begins cold
but is hot at the end. There is a problem but you can solve it.
¾ With Hua Ji: Petty people and back stabbers trap you. Love and emotions are a
problem. Also, if with Qing Yang, love is cut off.
¾ With 17 Di Jie, 18 Di Kong, and 48 Hua Ji together: (very strong), you will
separate with someone close. They will walk away or die. The loss hurts badly.
This is too big for Tian Liang to solve.

© 2007 by the American Feng Shui Institute Zi Wei Dou Shu Case Study 3 19
13 Qi Sha: A year of fighting or struggle, so good or bad stars are important. It is a
good year to go out and make a new life or career. This is the year with the most change.
You can break through if Qi Sha sees good stars.
Qi Sha is always bitter in the beginning and sweet in the end, even with good stars.
You still need to fight for the rewards.
If with bad stars, you go in the wrong direction. The family goes broke. Don’t
take risks.

¾ Zi Wei with Qi Sha in si or hai: Good for promotion, expanding business. This
signifies changing something old, breaking through. There can be a sudden big
benefit, even winning the lotto. It can mean winning a big fortune in one night.

¾ Wu Qu with Qi Sha in mao or you: If with good stars, start something new and make
money.

¾ Lian Zhen with Qi Sha in chou or wei: You fight for something.
¾ With good stars: You get it.
¾ With bad stars: Don’t bother trying.
¾ Qi Sha, Lian Zhen Hua Ji in travel: Disaster. Die in an accident while traveling,
buried by the side of the road.
¾ With Hua Lu: You make money or get peach blossom.

© 2007 by the American Feng Shui Institute Zi Wei Dou Shu Case Study 3 20
14 Po Jun: Revolutionary. It changes the old to new.
Be careful if with Wen Chang and especially Wen Qu as well as Hua Ji: It is easy
to drown, water disaster when in ming of the current year or age.
Po Jun, with Wen Chang, Wen Qu, and Hua Ke signifies sudden fame and honor.
Po Jun Hua Lu brings money. It can mean cosmetic surgery in ming or parents. In
illness, it may be an organ transplant.
Po Jun Hua Ji: It is difficult to push your revolution forward.

¾ Zi Wei with Po Jun in chou or wei: revolution or change, but change for the better.
¾ If with 17 Di Jie 18 Di Kong or the annual 96 Da Hao: It is not a good change.
This is also true for the four sha (37 Qing Yang, 38 Tuo Luo, 21 Huo Xing, 22
Ling Xing). All these stars have a bad effect even if they are not in the same
palace but are in the three combinations relationship or opposite. They make
the person waste energy. Business goes down so you are forced to change.
There may be legal entanglements.
¾ With 48 Hua Ji: There is something scary but not dangerous.
¾ With Hua Ji and Qing Yang: bleeding. If pregnant, she needs a c-section. It
may mean death for an elderly person.

¾ Wu Qu with Po Jun in si or hai: revolution. Po Jun is like water with waves up and
down.
¾ If it is with good stars, it turns out good. You can make money, but life is still
unstable.
¾ If with Hua Lu: you may have cosmetic surgery.
¾ If with Hua Ji, don’t do anything risky. With this combination, people may live
together without getting married.

¾ Lian Zhen with Po Jun in mao or you: If pregnant, a premature birth, especially in
the you palace. Your plans happen prematurely. You destroy old love to get new
love. Unstable, a bad combination. Tumors or blood problems.

Mr. Liang’s lifetime ming is in the you palace and contains Wu Qu Hua Quan
with Qi Sha.
Mr. Liang’s age in 1973 (34) is in the wei palace with Tian Xiang. Tian Xiang
does not have a strong meaning by itself so you have to look at the whole chart.
The current year, 1973 (gui chou), is in chou, opposite his small cycle ming (age)
in wei. The chou palace contains Zi Wei with Po Jun, meaning a revolution, big changes.
Po Jun is transformed by Hua Lu this year.
This Hua Lu sees Tan Lang Hua Ji in si (in the current year career palace, in the
three combinations relationship), but Tan Lang is not afraid of Hua Ji because Tan Lang
has the flexibility of wood. The same palace also holds Tian Xi (celebration) and Huo
Xing (the fire star). Tian Xi is always good and Tan Lang is one of the few stars that likes
Huo Xing. This combination can mean hitting the jackpot or winning the lottery.
This palace (si) also has the ten-year Hua Lu transforming Tan Lang. It is in the
three combinations relationship with the Hua Lu in the chou palace, so there is a double
Hua Lu in Mr. Liang’s current year ming.
When the current year and the small cycle (age) meet in the same or in opposite
palaces, it is extreme. Check Hua Lu and Hua Ji first. Good or bad shows up right away
and is very strong.
When Mr. Liang was 34 years old, his company merged with a big company. He
made $38 billion from the deal that year.

For an artist, look at 15 Wen Chang and 16 Wen Qu. If an artist is very good or
very spiritual, Wen Chang and Wen Qu will be in the same palace. In this chart, they are
both in the wei palace.
Mr. Kwong’s body palace is in shen in his lifetime travel palace. In 1976, he
became well-known because a foreign company promoted him. He was 38 at the time, so
the body palace was relevant (it has more effect when over 35).
Wen Chang was transformed by Hua Ke in 1976, meaning artistic fame. He also
saw all four transforming stars together in that year. This combination means an
outstanding person or an outstanding change taking place at that time.
The ming for 1976 (bing chen year) is in the chen palace.
• The annual Hua Lu transforms Tian Tong in the ming for 1976 (chen palace).
(This is also his small cycle karma palace, and means he is happy that year.)
• In the career palace for 1976 (in shen), Tian Ji is transformed by Hua Quan. This
palace also has 10-year Hua Lu and Hua Ji. It is reflected into his small cycle
ming (in yin). Since it includes Tian Ji and mostly good stars, the more he moves,
the more money he makes.
• The money palace for 1976 (in zi) has Tian Liang Hua Ke (lifetime) and Hua
Quan (large cycle).
At the time, Mr. Kwong was the most expensive artist in China. He got US$10
million per painting. However, he did not have a happy life earlier. He was placed in jail
during the Cultural Revolution.

Mr. Tian’s lifetime ming is in si with Ju Men.

The current year ming (2005, an yi you year) is in the you palace with Tian Tong
and a 10-year Hua Lu. Two Hua Jis are opposite in mao, so he has trouble. These Hua Jis
not only hit Tian Tong in the current year ming, they are also in his small cycle money
palace.
The mao palace, with Tai Yin and a double Hua Ji, is also Mr. Tian’s body palace
(shen gong). It is opposite the current year ming, so he may have trouble sleeping (Tai
Yin Hua Ji signifies insomnia).
Chou is opposite the small cycle ming and is career for the current year. It has
Tian Ji with a double Hua Lu (actually triple with the one in you). Because of the Lu’s,
career and money should be okay. Since it is his small cycle travel and his current year
money, it signifies that he makes money in a foreign country. Mr. Tian makes a lot of
money selling health food from China to the US.
So he has trouble but it is not money. What is it?
Mr. Tian’s lifetime Hua Ji is in his lifetime spouse palace (mao). If Tai Yin Hua Ji
is in spouse in a male’s chart (as in this case), the wife may have insomnia from worrying
about him. However, if this combination is in a woman’s chart, the husband will have a
lover. Still, maybe Mr. Tian has a mistress and that is why his wife is worrying. When
asked, he confirmed that he was having an affair.
It is also possible that this chart shows bleeding because the Hua Ji’s hit Tian
Tong in you, which is the ming for the current year.
